JTLYK 14 February

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we reach the half-way point of the school year, we are so proud of the way the Year 6 children are maturing and taking responsibility for their own learning.

As a treat for all their hard work and effort, we are giving the children a break from homework over the half-term holiday. We want them to rest, relax and recharge their batteries, ready for the second half of the spring term. If they are looking for some learning to do over the holiday, there are the 100 word spelling list and the Baffling Bodies project.

Wishing you all a very happy and safe half term holiday,

Danni, Jo, Kathryn, Julia and Tom

English

This week in English, the children have been creating an encyclopaedia page about the various species from The Hobbit. They practised using conjunctions to connect main and subordinate clauses, and experimented with the structure and flow of their sentences. While writing their entries, they carefully considered how to provide key details about the appearance, habitats, diets, and behaviours of the diverse characters in the story.

Maths

We have really given 110% in maths this week… which we have discovered is not possible, as we have been learning all about percentages and we know that 100% is everything! It has been so enjoyable to find out that those mysterious numbers and symbols are not nearly as scary as we once thought!

How much more to load?

What fraction of the price?

Science

This week, we learnt about heart rate and how it changes with the amount of exercise we do. The children designed an experiment to monitor these changes during physical activity. They collected data and discovered that as exercise intensity increases, the heart rate rises to deliver more oxygen throughout the body and help remove carbon dioxide.

Ask your children about the double circulatory system!

Homework

Please continue to remind your child about the importance of handing in their homework on time. We want the children to be independent with their organisation skills; this will be incredibly valuable when they start secondary school.

Baffling Bodies project

Your child needs to answer 10 of their own questions about the human body using non-fiction books and websites to find things out. Present the information creatively and remember to include pictures and diagrams. Due in: Monday 31 March.

Spellings

There are no spelling words this week as it is half term next week.

However, your child came home (also below) with a copy of the 100 word spelling list. How many can they spell now we are half way through the year? Please use time over the half term holiday to learn some more on the list!
