JTLYK 31 January
Dear parents and carers,
This week we focused on descriptive writing in English, to help us when writing our story settings next week. We recapped the four word classes we have been using the last few weeks (nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs – please ask the children if they can tell you what each means and give you a few examples of each) and then used them in our sentences. The children came up with some very creative sentences about an icy, illuminated mountain and sunny, sandy beach.
In Maths this week we focused on solving some multiplication sentences using counters to build the groups and looked at counters being arranged into arrays. This is when groups are organised in neat rows and columns. We used these to write repeated addition and multiplication sentences. We ended the week with an introduction to division, specifically looking at grouping.
Our clay dinosaur eyes are in the process of being fired in the kiln, ready for painting in a few weeks time. This week in art, we started exploring the technique of collage. We discussed different ways the paper can be cut and torn and that a mixture of colours, textures and patterns can be used. The children were very patient when trying out the technique to fill in some 2D shapes. Over the next few lessons we are going to be making collage dinosaur pictures. If children would like to bring in different papers it would be greatly appreciated.
Papers that would be suitable:
- Old wrapping paper
- Magazine cuttings
- Wallpaper samples
- Any coloured, patterned or textured paper.
In PE, we practised our speed stepping and catching skills. Ask your child how many times they can clap before catching a ball.
In RE, we continued our unit looking at Islam. We learned about why Muslims follow the prophet Muhammed (PBUH) example and discussed what are good qualities to learn from others.
In Science, we discovered where dinosaur fossils have been found. We started by recapping what era dinosaurs existed in and the three periods this era is split into. We then recapped our Year 1 knowledge of continents and oceans before finding clues to discover which countries dinosaurs might have lived in. We also learnt that during the time of the dinosaurs there was one super continent called Pangea.
