Curriculum

JTLYK 31 January

Dear Parents and Carers,

The children’s scientific knowledge of the human body has progressed this week, as they discovered how the heart pumps, on average, 100,000 times a day to keep the blood flowing to all parts of the body. Next week, the children will have the opportunity to watch the dissection of a sheep’s heart with the expert - Dr Clare B. We’ll also be investigating our heart rate and recording our data.

Ask your child to explain the journey of a red blood cell!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Danni, Jo, Kathryn, Julia, Catherine and Mark.

English

The Daily Snarl

We have reached the part in The Hobbit when they encounter the Goblin Kingdom in the Misty Mountains, and the Goblin King is killed by Gandalf as he attempts to rescue Thorin and Co. We felt that, if the goblins had a newspaper, they would write a furious report, with the dwarves and Gandalf portrayed as evil villains. Our challenge this week, has been to write a news report from the goblin point-of-view, and we employed various games and exercises to help us show how devastated and wrathful the goblins would be. Ask your child if they can explain the difference between exaggeration and hyperbole.

Maths

We mustered all of our Year 6 knowledge and skills this week as we navigated the subject of Algebra. We began by looking at mathematical patterns and went on to substitute variables for letters. Ask your child if they can work these problems out:

If x=12 and y=8    what is     2x + 3y + x ?

If p= 20 and q= 15   what is    3p - q ?

Science

This week, we ‘walked through the heart’. We learnt about the human circulatory system and how a red blood cell makes its way around the body.

Homework

Please continue to remind your child about the importance of handing in their homework on time.

We want the children to be independent with their organisation skills; this will be incredibly valuable when they start secondary school.

Spellings

Year 6 will be returning to spellings tests on a Monday morning first thing. Please make sure your child practises their spellings throughout the week.

draft, draught, philosophy, emphasis, familiar, frequently, interfere, profession, physical, sacrifice.

Learn these ready for a test on Monday 3rd February.
