Dear Parents and Carers

Year 4 had a thrilling day at Brooklands Museum learning about the science behind aviation and motoring. To support their Material Mayhem topic, they studied the changes in construction material in the history of aircraft, from the wood, paper and bamboo of the 1907 Roe biplane to the aluminium of Concorde. The chilly weather couldn't dampen their enthusiasm as they tested out their downhill racers on the famous incline. They even got to sample the high life by visiting a luxury aircraft once owned by the Sultan of Oman!

On Thursday, 10 Year 6's took part in the Guildford Primary Schools Dodgeball Tournament at Spectrum. Run by teachers from Merrow Junior School, this tournament is a very popular event. The HT team learnt about teamwork, as well as tactics and most importantly they all had a fabulous time. These events couldn't happen without parents volunteering to take children to fixtures and so we are very grateful for all the help you give us.

I hope you’ve settled back into your school routines now we’ve completed our second week at school. Just to remind you that the school day starts promptly at 08:30 at the infants and 08:40 at the juniors. Lessons, assemblies and early morning learning activities begin straight away so it’s really important that children are in school on time to start their day, with their peers.

Our extensive clubs programme is up and running for the term. I hope your child is taking the opportunity to try something new. The staff are being fantastic role models; many staff will be stepping out of their comfort zone this term to learn a new instrument in each Friday's assembly, we will keep you informed of their progress!

Our assembly series this term is based on St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians in the New Testament, in particular the words in chapter 13 about love. It will give us the opportunity week by week to think about different aspects of God’s perfect love, explaining to the children that love is patient, kind, not proud, selfish or rude and eternal. We’ll even be rewriting our motto for the term, from Learn to Live to “Learn to Love”.

Following this theme comes my usual traffic and parking plea. Please, please help us keep the roads and pavements around the school safe for everyone – the children and families walking, cycling and our neighbouring residents. That means not blocking residents’ driveways, NEVER parking on the zig-zags, bus stops, double yellow lines or corners and not bumping your car up onto the pavement. Please do not stop in the middle of the road to let your children in or out of the car, this is not safe and not something we want modelled to the children. We appreciate this is a busy time of day for everyone, often juggling multiple priorities; however, we can only make the environment safer if we all take time to think about others too. We would be very grateful if you could pass this message on to anyone else who picks up your children and does not receive the school newsletter, in particular grandparents and childminders – many thanks!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Vicky
