Curriculum

JTLYK 10 January

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a wonderful first few days back! It has been lovely to see the children raring to go and ready to start a new term.

Besides enjoying the first chapter of The Hobbit, we have been learning about the seven life processes of living things, using the acronym ‘MRS GREN’. Ask your child if they can remember what each letter stands for and how each process is essential to the survival of living things.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Danni, Jo, Kathryn, Julia, Catherine and Mark

Introducing The Hobbit…

This week, we have started reading this wonderful fantasy by J. R. R. Tolkien. The children have listened beautifully and have practised their fluency by reading an extract from the first chapter. We completed our first piece of work using the information from the text to draw a picture of Bilbo Baggins’ hobbit hole. We also discussed our first impressions of the characters we have met so far.

Ask your child what their first impression of Thorin Oakenshield was.

Maths

This week, we have been finishing our fractions unit. We consolidated our learning by looking at finding the fraction of an amount.

Have a look at the example below, and then ask your child to work out what 2/3 of 36 is, using a similar bar model.

Coming Up

  • Friday 31 January – Year 5 and 6 Movie Night
  • Friday 14 February - Fluffy Friday
  • Wednesday 5 March – Science Museum Trip

Homework

Homework has now returned to normal. Please ensure your child is staying on track with their homework tasks. If they encounter any challenges, encourage them to speak with their class teacher for support.

Instead of Text Talk, the children will now receive a weekly comprehension task. They should read the text carefully—aloud if possible—and then answer the accompanying questions.

Spellings

No spelling this week.

Punctuality

Thank you for getting your child in on time each morning. It is vitally important to be punctual as we begin work at 8.30am, and we don’t want anyone to miss out on valuable learning time.
