JTLYK 22 November
Dear parents and carers,
In Maths this week, we have been looking at adding and subtracting tens. The children quickly spotted the pattern of only the tens unit changing because when adding ten or multiples of ten there are no ones. We have been using lots of practical equipment like dienes to help us spot these patterns and with answering different types of questions.
Please continue focusing on the childrens skills when adding and subtracting numbers within twenty at home. We will be moving onto column addition and subtraction next week, and this will greatly support them when exchanging across a ten.
In History, we really focused in on the key events that happened each day during The Great fire of London, drawing upon our introduction last week. We looked at where the fire started and why it took hold so quickly, due to the hot summer conditions, strong winds and materials the houses were made from. We discovered the ways they attempted to bring the fire under control (using fire hooks, water squirts, gunpowder and fire buckets). As well as looking at key people alive during the time of the fire.
In English, we wrote a recount of our trip to St Paul’s Cathedral on Monday. We focused on making sure events were ordered correctly, using our knowledge of time conjunctions from our instruction writing. We added lots of creative adjectives and emotion words, to described how we felt at different points. As well as learning about how to change verbs into the past tense through adding the suffix ed. Although we discovered that some words like eat and sit change completely.
St Paul's Cathedral Trip
We had a really excellent time on our trip to St Paul’s Cathedral on Monday. The children were engaged, enthusiastic and represented Pewley Down Infant School beautifully. They thoroughly enjoyed their workshop with Lilja, dressing up as different characters such as King Charles II and the baker Thomas Farrinor and exploring the artifacts in the crypt. Both classes enjoyed the reward of seeing the view of the cathedral floor from the Whispering Gallery, after climbing 376 stairs. Thank you to all the parents who came and supported us on the trip, you all helped make the day run smoothly and successfully.
Nativity
Our Nativity rehearsals are coming along really well. The children are now starting to remember their lines without prompting and actions are being added to all the songs. Please continue practising their lines at home focusing on speaking in a loud clear voice, and adding some expression and actions.
Reading Record
Just a quick reminder to please send in your child's reading folder with book and reading record every Thursday.
