Dear Parents/Carers

We have had a wonderful and busy week in Year 3. Thank you to parents for attending parents’ evening, we find the first of these very useful in helping us better understand your child. If you have not yet booked one or were not able to make your appointment, please do get in touch with your child’s teacher.

In Science this week, we recapped the skeleton but also learnt about muscles. The children discussed how muscles work in pairs and that they are either voluntary or involuntary. At home, if you have stretchy materials (like elastic bands), you could have fun games of connecting sticks/pencils to see how muscles work in pairs and discuss this further.

Maths

In maths this week, the children have been working hard on their understanding of exchanging tens or hundreds when completing column subtraction. This got trickier as the week went on, when they moved on to subtract 2-digit numbers from 3-digit numbers. This was harder because children needed to be mindful of putting the digit in the correct column. Please do continue to practise subtraction at home.

English

In English, the children have enjoyed learning poetry, including trying to recite From a Railway Carriage. From this, we moved on to talking about onomatopoeia and the children understand this as a word that sounds like the sound/action. The children wrote their own onomatopoeic poems about Bonfire Night and they were really wonderful to listen to!

Spellings

The spellings which have been sent home for practising have been put in the back of your child’s book. We have included some extra challenge questions which you may choose to practise too. These words all have the /oa/ phoneme in them, as in ‘groan’: telephone, suppose, grown, groan, focus, though.
