Dear Parents and Carers
What a great end to our week in Year 4 with the first Fluffy Friday of the year! The children have had a wonderful time learning new skills and making new friends. Next week is the beginning of the half term holiday for children and they will finish on Wednesday 23rd at 1.30 pm.
The children will be designing their Christmas cards on Tuesday afternoon and will then bring home the results for you to admire (and hopefully order!). They can bring in their own felt tips/colouring items if they wish. We have also told them to have a careful think about their design over the weekend.
English
Would you like to join the Roman Army? Most of the children certainly would, having learned about ‘persuasive language’ in an advert for new recruits! We identified features of this genre which are – emotive language, alliteration, facts, opinion, rule of three and rhetorical questions. See if your child can give you an example of these aspects of persuasive language.
Maths
This week we moved on to subtraction. The children have been practising writing column subtraction, being very careful to record accurately all of their operations. We have also been using ‘exchange’ methods when there aren’t enough in a ones, tens or hundreds column to carry out the calculation.
Times Tables
We have been learning the 11 x tables this week and have recorded them in our blue books. Please make sure these come in to school each day in your child’s backpack. Here are some useful websites to help make learning fun! Remember to help your child to do the TT Rockstars challenge this week!
Daily Ten (click through to level 4 multiplication and try the mixed table activities)
TT Rockstars (help your child to log on for 10 minutes, maybe three or four times a week)
Carole Vorderman’s website has some great games too! The mathsfactory.com is here.
Spellings
This week, we have been studying the short ‘e’ sound and all its representations. The children have a sticker in their Spelling Journals but here are the words for this week:
many, mention, again, breath, friend, exercise, extreme, whether, weather, possession
Remember, Tracey’s group do not have to learn the class spellings.
Computing
Not this week!
History
This week we met Boudicca, queen of the Iceni tribe! The Romans also arrived and we explored the many reasons why they would want to invade Briton – can your child tell you what they were? The children then drew their own timelines for the occupation and are looking forward to finding out lots of new facts about those historical times after half term!
