JTLYK 11 October

Dear parents/carers,

We have had a wonderful and busy week in Year 3. We thoroughly enjoyed our school trip on Thursday where we visited 3 local churches in Guildford and compared their similarities and differences. We completed various different activities, such as, arts and crafts, a scavenger hunt and took part in discussions relating to the Bible.

In science this week, we continued learning about light and how our eyes use light to be able to see objects around us. The children learnt about the difference between light sources and light reflectors. The children used torches and mirrors to explore how the light moves from the source, to the object and to the eye.

In English, we have been focussing on, My Shadow is Pink as our model text and relating it to our school value ‘Everyone knowing that they are treasured and loved as a unique child of God’. The children learnt to explain what the features and structure of a formal letter are. Then, the children planned a persuasive letter where they included key persuasive features such as, adverbs, imperative verbs and powerful adjectives.

In maths, we have been working on adding and subtracting 1s across a 10. The children practised moving towards more efficient strategies of jumping to and from the previous multiple of 10. The children recapped their number bonds to 10 and applied them, so that they could add and subtract from a multiple of 10. For example; 10 – 3 = 7, so 480 – 3 = 477. They learnt to efficiently partition numbers to work out how much further they need to jump back from a multiple of 10.

Have a go at this challenge:

Use the number line to find the jump to the previous multiple of 10
