JTLYK 27 September

Dear Parents,

The children have had another busy week in school. As you will have seen in your child’s book bag, they have another sharing book that they brought home on Tuesday. The children have a look at all the books we have and then choose their own to take home. They are not expected to read these but to listen and enjoy with an adult. Here are some questions you can ask your child while/after reading the story. Did you enjoy the story and why? What was your favourite part? Who was your favourite character and why? Please return the book on Monday morning.

Stay and Play

As you will notice from the ‘Dates for your diary’ below, on the 18th October we will be having a Stay and Play session at 2.15pm. This is when parents are invited down to the Reception classrooms to stay and play with your child and see how well the children have settled in. If you can’t make it, it would be great if another relative could come instead.

Here are some things you could be doing with your child at home…

Check out Tapestry for daily videos from Jo and Hayley.

Can you join in with Jo and Hayley? I wonder what will be in the box? Have a go at saying the new sound. Can you teach the new sound to one of your soft toys or even a family member? Yesterday your child will have come home with a sheet of this week’s phonemes. Please practise them together. You could cut them up and stick them around the house, then go for a hunt to find them. When you find them, say the sound! The sounds for this week are ‘i’, ’n’, ’m’ and ‘d’.

We have also started blending sounds to make words with the children. Blending is an important skill when reading. Here are a few oral blending games you may enjoy playing with your child. (Make sure you are saying the phonetic sounds and not the letter names)

What’s that noise? What sound does… A c-a-t make? A c-ow make? A h-e-n make? A sh-ee-p make?

Point to the ... d-oor, w-or-l (wall), ch-air, f-l-oor

Do the action… Sit d-ow-n. Point to your t-ee-th. Hop like a f-r-o-g.
