No. 237 - 10 May

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend, despite the rain – and have welcomed the arrival of sunny days, at long last! It couldn’t have been better weather for our Year 4 children’s trip to High Ashurst Activity Centre and camp. I enjoyed joining them on Wednesday evening for a singsong around the campfire. It was great to see their joy and enthusiasm; they sang so loudly, laughed with their friends and made my week! I know they had a brilliant time away, as well as a good day today learning about the River Wey – they’ll probably need plenty of sleep this weekend to catch up!

Today, Year 3 had a glorious day out and about in Guildford, dressed as evacuees, meeting some local characters from the Second World War and then returning to school to be billeted back with their parents and carers. Thank you for playing along with the role play! I hope they’re well-behaved and polite evacuee children this weekend!

Next week, it’s the turn of our Year 5 children to head off on their residential. They’ll be travelling to Brenscombe Farm in Dorset for a slightly longer adventure, with 3 nights away from home. We know that these opportunities for children to grow in independence really support our school’s ethos of “learning to live”. It’s amazing how much the camaraderie and togetherness builds for an even better time in school when they return. They come back more mature and with greater self-belief, ready to “embrace the future with hope and confidence.”

Just yesterday, the children from Year 2 really enjoyed joining with Year 3, 5 and 6 for a visit from the TV celebrity, Stephen Mulhern. He thrilled them with some magic tricks, answered their questions about becoming an author, and read some pages from his new book about his own childhood, reminding us that sometimes what seems impossible really does happen and that dreams can sometimes come true.

I’m sure your children have talked about Simon, Holy Trinity’s rector visiting in assembly. He’s really enjoying getting to know the school and joining us every couple of weeks or so. This week, he spoke to the infants about being hopeful, with a beautiful photograph of a double rainbow reminding us of God’s faithfulness even when the clouds seem dark. It fitted beautifully into our assembly series this term which is based on Jesus’ wisdom for His disciples in some verses from the Bible known as The Beatitudes. These well-known phrases describe how to live life well together…we’re also enjoying linking them to the life of the honey bee – the “Bee Attitudes”. This week was all about being hopeful and overcoming disappointment, just as a bee buzzes onto the next flower in search of pollen and nectar. There’s also a colour of the week, which this week is pink! Perfect for the sunny days ahead!

Enjoy the weekend!

With much love, Clare

Thought of the week: Bee hopeful! How do you overcome disappointments? “Blessed are the meek, for they will receive all that God has promised.”
