Intent - The vision

At HTPD, we believe that learning Spanish should open a window to the wider world. It should inspire children to become confident and curious communicators. Through lively and engaging lessons, our KS2 class teachers aim to foster a love of language-learning through songs, games, stories, conversation and cultural exploration. We help children to understand and appreciate the traditions, places and people of Spanish-speaking countries. Our curriculum encourages resilience and confidence. It also provides strong foundations for future language learning at secondary school and beyond.

Above all, we want our children to enjoy languages, embrace new experiences and feel proud of every new word and phrase they learn along the way!

Implementation - How we achieve our goal

Spanish is taught across Years 3–6 using The Primary Languages Network (PLN), a scheme of engaging, progressive lessons which develop children’s confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

As Spanish is a brand-new subject for our school this academic year (2025–26), all year groups are currently following the Stage 1 programme. This ensures that every child builds strong foundations and key vocabulary together.

From September 2026, our curriculum will progress so that Years 4–6 move on to the Stage 2 programme. Meanwhile, the new Year 3 cohort will begin on Stage 1.

Throughout the curriculum, pupils explore a wide range of exciting topics. These include greetings, colours, numbers, animals, celebrations, food, family, the body, weather and places in Spain. As children progress, they build on these foundations through learning about school life, towns, directions, hobbies, descriptions and conversations. They also continue to develop their pronunciation, fluency and cultural understanding.

Lessons are designed to be lively, interactive and memorable. Through this, we hope to inspire a lifelong love of languages.

Impact - How do we know our vision has come to fruition?

By the end of their time at our school, children will have grown in confidence and enthusiasm for learning Spanish. Through engaging and progressive lessons, pupils will have developed a secure foundation in speaking, listening, reading and writing. This enables them to understand and take part in simple conversations.

As they move on to secondary school, pupils are well placed to continue their language-learning journey. They are equipped with the skills, confidence and positive attitudes needed to flourish in future language lessons and beyond.
