JTLYK 17 January

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year 5 have built on their fabulous start back to school after the holidays. They have shown some great focus and have some excellent work to show for it.

In English, the children have written some stellar fictional planet descriptions that they planned last week. It’s been lovely to see their writing improving so much since the start of the year. In maths, we have developed our skills with column multiplication, multiplying 3- and 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers. In science, we have been impressed with the enthusiasm with which so many of the children approached their planet, star, asteroid or comet research. Their engagement with this research has allowed them to create some wonderful infographic entries for our class Space Encyclopaedias. Staying with the science theme, in art, we began planning a rocket picture based on the work of Peter Thorpe. We also started a new programming unit in computing, using Scratch to get to grips with the logic of if/then algorithms. In RE we have been exploring some key concepts of Hinduism such as deities and karma. We were excited to see such a bright, clear Wolf Moon on the way into school on Monday! The children will be continuing to check the Moon each night to shade in their lunar cycle homework.

Thank you for all the offers of help with the Winchester Science Centre trip! We have so appreciated so many parents getting in touch, willing to volunteer their time. We now have enough parent volunteers for each class.
