JTLYK 22 November

Dear Parents and Carers

This week, we began learning our two songs that Year 4 will perform in the Christmas play ‘A Christmas Carol’. Your child should have brought home a copy of the words for both songs to practise at home. After trying the song ‘Thank You Very Much’ at school, we have decided the children do not need to learn the verse but only the first two choruses of the song (the one about the flag and the one about a cannon!) The plays are on Monday 9th and Wednesday 11th December and there are two performances per day (one in the afternoon and one in the evening).  Children in Mandela and Keller will perform together on the Monday, the children from Shackleton and Nightingale on the Wednesday. We will be performing as a group of Victorian children and will need a simple costume to wear eg: a long skirt and shawl for girls, a cap and scarf for boys.

Song: Thank You Very Much

Thank you very much

Thank you very much

That's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me

I may sound double Dutch

But my delight is such

I feel as if a losing war's been won for me

And if I had a flag, I'd hang me flag out

To add a sort of final victory touch

But since I left me flag at home

I simply have to say:

Thank you very, very, very much

Thank you very much

Thank you very much

That's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me

It sounds a bit bizarre

But things the way they are

I feel as if another life's begun for me

And if I had a cannon I would fire it

To add a sort of celebration touch

But since I left me cannon at home

I simply have to say:

Thank you very, very, very much.

House Cross Country on Thursday

Next Thursday, the children will take part in the House Cross Country competition.  Everyone who takes part, whatever the distance they do (and they are not great distances!)  will get a House Point. The children will need to wear their PE kit and bring a spare pair of shoes to wear afterwards.  4B and 4 SP will not do PE on Wednesday so should wear normal school uniform on that day.

English

This week we continued writing our Roman villa details by turning our attention to all the different rooms that a wealthy Roman family would expect in their desirable residence!  The children wrote about the Atrium, Culina, Tablinium, Cubiculum, Triclinium and Peristylium (would you like a swimming pool in yours?).  Ask your children what each room would be used for …..

Maths

This week we have been working on our times tables and the inverse operations.  We practised using the 3, 6, 9 and 7 time tables facts.  The children learned that multiplication is ‘commutative’ and can be calculated in any order.  They also practised partitioning different factors to make their calculations easier eg: 7 can be partitioned into 5 and 2, so 7 x 6 can also be made from 5 x 6 plus 2 x 6 and adding the product of both equations.  7 x 6 = 5 x 6 + 2 x 6.

Times Tables

We have been learning the 9 x tables this week and have recorded them in our blue books.  Please make sure these come in to school each day in your child’s backpack.  Please help your child to log on to take part in this week’s TT Rockstar challenge!

Spellings

This week, we have been studying the ‘schwa’ (short ‘u’) sound and all its representations. The children have a sticker in their Spelling Journals but here are the words for this week:

enough, century, centre, undone, remember, pressure, measure, answer, suppose, position.

Remember, Tracey’s group do not have to learn the class spellings.

DT

This week the children have had fun becoming familiar with our new CAD (Computer Aided Design) programme, Silhouette Studio.  We got to grips with using this new software so that we can use it to design our chocolate boxes for our Christmas DT project in the coming weeks.

PSHE

The children talked about peer pressure this week.  They were very engaged in role playing scenarios where they had to decide whether to be pressured by those peers that wanted to do the wrong thing, or be brave and do the right thing.

PE

We used different sized balls this week to practise passing, chasing and moving quickly.

Science

This week the children went outside to look at all the trees we have in the school grounds!  As young scientists the children used their skills of observing and measuring to classify different leaves.  Ask your child if they found a compound leaf and whether it was deciduous.  Can your child tell you some of the names of the trees we have at HT?
