JTLYK 20 September

Dear parents/carers,

We have had another great week in Year 3. 3N had a successful first swimming lesson, while 3L continue with the gym lessons and 3G have been choreographing their own dance routines. During the children’s second session of PE they have been learning to play a range of games with a focus on following rules and playing fairly.

We have continued to focus on learning about the human body during our science lessons this week. The children got to carry out a fun demonstration at the end of the week where, as a class, we built a digestive system labelling the key parts. I am sure that your child will enjoy telling you all about this.

In maths we have continued to work on deepening our understanding of the ones, tens, and hundreds place. The children have been partitioning 3-digit numbers in different ways before using addition and subtraction to work out 1/10/100 more or less of a given 3-digit number. Have a go at this problem and maybe come up with similar ones at home: Georgie is thinking of a number. 10 less than her number is 520. What would 100 less than Georgie’s original number be?

In English the children have continued to write their adaptions of The Koala Who Could.

Alongside this they have been learning about how to use a technique called ‘show not tell’ to make sure that they are avoiding quick and simple descriptions in order to make the writing more detailed and exciting to read.

Spellings

The spellings which have been sent home for practising have been put in the back of your child’s book. We have included some extra challenge questions which you may choose to practise too. These words all have the /a/ phoneme in them, as in ‘flat’. We have talked about how some of these words have graphemes in them which rarely make the /a/ sound but that it is important to be aware of them, such as guarantee and meringue.

piano, acrobat, plait, salmon, strap, flattest

Challenge words:

meringue, guarantee
