HTPD 29/9/17

29 September 2017

Dear parents

As I write, Year 6 are taking part in their first day trip this term. They are visiting Wisley gardens and particularly focusing on plant adaptation in the enormous tropical greenhouses which are the closest we can get to the South American rainforest. It’s a good way to be fully immersed in their topic and, as with all our trips, it will bring learning to life I’m sure. Even now, all these years on, I can still remember all of my primary school trips! Next week, Year 2 are heading into Guildford to shop at the farmers’ market – again we know that the impact of heading outside the classroom brings a “zest for learning and a love of life.”

Thank you so much to those of you that have already filled in the standing order form that I handed out right at the start of term. Thanks to your generosity, as well as supporting the school in paying for building renovations and topping up our resources funds, some of this regular giving goes towards our hardship fund. This means that no child ever misses out on trips due to financial hardship at home. It’s something that we really want to continue to do. It’s never too late to consider filling in a giving form – do ask for one at either office if you’re interested.

Next Thursday, following the huge success of last year’s maths day, we’re going for it again! I do hope you will be able to join us and see what maths looks like in your child’s year group. The children will be enjoying a day full of topic-linked maths activities and you will also be welcome to join us (from around 2.45pm at the juniors, and immediately after drop off as part of a “stay and play” at the infants after drop off). Do check the JTLYK pages for details of timings.

I hope you enjoy a good weekend.

With best wishes
Clare

Current Year 6
This is a reminder to the parents and carers of Year 6 children that applications for secondary schools are now open. On-line applications are preferred by SCC, and are available on their website www.surreycc.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/schools/school-admissions/secondary-applications/secondary-school-admissions. Should you require a hard copy, please e-mail schoolbooklets@surreycc.gov.uk or telephone 0300 200 1015. The closing date for all applications for entry in September 2018 is Tuesday, 31st October 2017 and it is vital that you submit your application on or before this date.

Free School Meals
Do you know if you are eligible? If you are not sure please have a look at the school website for general advice www.htpd.surrey.sch.uk/The-School/Parents/Payments-Arrangements.aspx . If you need further help, please do not hesitate to contact Sheryl or Flora through the HT office in the strictest confidence. You only need to complete a short form for us to check your eligibility. Please consider registering even if your child usually has packed lunch as this can allow the school to access extra funding that supports many of our educational programmes. Last year, our current Year 3 parents may not have had to think about this, so please do take time to see if this is something to which you may be entitled.

Breakfast Club
The new arrangements for Breakfast Club are working well. As advised in previous letters, the charge for a drop-off at/after 08h15 will be £1.50. However, if your child is dropped off after 08h15 and requires breakfast, they will be charged the full rate (i.e. £4.00). Many children are tempted to have a second breakfast – if you do not want them to eat at Breakfast Club, please do let Julie know. Thanks!

HTPD 22/9/17

22 September 2017

Dear Parents,

As September draws to a close, it feels like the term is well underway. The children in Reception are now with us for full days and enjoyed celebrating with their parents and carers this afternoon all the things that they have achieved already in school. Meanwhile, across the other year groups our exciting topic based approach is ensuring that the children are really enthusiastic and engaged in their studies, with Year 4 heading out on the first trip of the term to Butser Ancient Farm dressed as ancient Britons. In every classroom there is a real “zest for learning and love of life” as the children and staff alike live out our school values. In addition the school council have been helping us all to play well together, with the juniors writing a “Woods Charter” to support respectful and safe play.

You may have heard in the news about the Archbishop of Canterbury’s initiative, the National Prayer Weekend which takes place at the end of next week. Justin Welby is encouraging all of us to pray both for the world and for each other, and as a church school we are taking part. He says “"Prayer matters, and prayer changes everything. Because as God changes us in prayer, he drives us out to be justice-seekers, peacemakers, healers and bringers of good news". Next week, you’ll receive an invitation to share any prayer requests with us. Just jot down anything that you’d value prayer for and we will ask the children as well as our school prayer group to pray. Of course these can be anonymous. Drop them in to either school office.

Can I also remind you all to be respectful to our neighbours as well as to pedestrians at the beginning and end of the school day. Please be careful to park sensibly without blocking driveways or parking on the pavement. The traffic wardens will give tickets to cars that are parked like this – and will continue to come if our neighbours are finding this to be an ongoing problem.

We enjoyed a visit this week from a senior lecturer from the University of Winchester whose research involves talking with children about how they understand science and matters of faith. She praised the children for their high level of enquiry, skilful debate and respectful, inclusive responses to her questions.

With best wishes
Clare

Monday 25 September – Year 5L to RGS – Tudor Days

Current Year 6
This is a little reminder to the parents and carers of Year 6 children that applications for secondary schools are now open. All of the secondary schools in Guildford are running Open Evenings over the next few weeks. Please check the respective schools’ websites for dates and details so that you can arrange to attend them.

Please note that on-line applications are preferred by SCC, and e-Admissions forms together with further information are available on their website www.surreycc.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/schools/school-admissions/secondary-applications/secondary-school-admissions. Should you require a hard copy, please e-mail schoolbooklets@surreycc.gov.uk or telephone 0300 200 1015. Paper copies should be returned directly to Surrey County Council. The closing date for all applications for entry in September 2018 is Tuesday 31 October 2017 and it is vital that you submit your application on or before this date.

Breakfast Club Change
As part of our safeguarding responsibilities, if your child arrives on site before 8.30am, they will need to go to Breakfast Club where they will be looked after until 8.30am when they may go to their classrooms or outside to play (this is supervised by the teacher on duty). This has been happening since we returned to school last week. A register is being kept so that we are aware of who is on site.

As a result, we have reviewed our pricing for breakfast club at Holy Trinity and from Monday 18 September it will be run on similar lines to that at Pewley. The prices will be as follows:

  • The charge for children arriving at Breakfast Club from 8.00am will be £4.00 and will include breakfast.
  • The charge for a drop-off at/after 8.15am will be £1.50.

ParentPay will be updated early next week to reflect this change. You’ve probably noticed that Breakfast Club for the past 2 weeks hasn’t appeared on the ParentPay statements yet – this will be updated this weekend. Thank you for your assistance! Bev

Allergens
This is to advise you that Harrison Catering has provided the School with a file listing all allergens on the school menus. This file is available in both school offices. If your child has allergies, please do pop in to see the menus. Menus are rotated termly – the file will be updated each term.

15 September 2017

Dear Parents,

It was just great to see so many of you at one or both of our Meet the Team evenings. It reminded all of us on staff how much we value our supportive home/school partnership. Thank you for your interest, positivity, energy and enthusiasm about the year ahead. It is a real privilege to be sharing in the education of your children.

We started our term’s assembly series this week. We'll be looking at the story of King David from the Old Testament. He was the Israelites' most loved king and known as "a man after God's own heart". He shows us so many Christ-like attributes, but was also fallible and made mistakes. The term's theme also uses traditional tales to encourage us all to look at things from different points of view (what if the Big Bad Wolf was actually trying to check the three little pigs' dwellings for strength to withstand a storm, or if the little red hen had a helpful team right from the start of the story?), together with a weekly punctuation mark which connects the Bible theme with the children's grammar lessons! The theme goes right up to Christmas time, linking in with the Christmas nativity carol "Once in Royal David's city". Do keep a look out for the assembly slides that are published each week on the website if you would like more information about the theme.

Our sporting calendar got underway as well with a phenomenal triumph! The girls’ cross country squad from the junior school were the highest placed team in all year groups (as well as winning many individual medals!) competing against over 9 other schools! What a great start to the year! Do encourage your child to take part in one or more of our extracurricular clubs and thank you in advance for supporting the children’s participation in a huge number of fixtures in the weeks to come. Here’s to many more victories!

With best wishes
Clare

With educational budgets tightening the fund-raising role of the PTA is becoming more and more vital so please consider it carefully. HTPD 8/9/17

08 September 2017

Dear Parents,

How exciting to welcome so many new families into our school community! I do hope that you are starting to feel at home if this was your first week with children at either of the two sites. What a lovely first week of term! Across the whole school, I’ve been so impressed by the children’s approach to their new classes; they have been so keen to get to know new friends as well as wanting to impress their new teachers. It bodes well for an excellent year ahead!

We spoke to the children in assembly about the importance of making a good start and encouraged them, with God’s help, to have a positive attitude to any future challenges. One thing we focused on was being smart - they’ve looked fantastic in their new school uniforms and shiny shoes. Thank you for helping them be ready for the year ahead. We’ve reminded those with long hair that it should be tied up (it should reduce the annual head lice explosion around October time!) as well as asking for jewellery to be left at home. All the children have begun to write class charters for their new classes and the respect and empathy that they are determined to demonstrate is just wonderful. They are already keen to live out our school values.

I’m looking forward to meeting with you all at the “Meet the Team” evenings coming up next Tuesday and Thursday (see below for details). It will give me a chance to update you on school news and hopefully inspire you with ways to partner with us this coming year. You’ll also hear more detail from the teaching teams about the curriculum your child will be taught this year, as well as ways that you can support them in their learning. Do try and come along if you can.

Please can I remind you that both sites are nut free to make our school safe for any children with allergies. To that end, all snacks brought into school should be either fruit or vegetables. This is also really healthy – and reduces litter around school as there aren’t any wrappers. Thank you for your support in this.

Finally, a big thank you once again for the generous presents and cards received at the end of last term. All the staff really appreciated your kindness and good wishes.

With best wishes
Clare
