Junior 12/9/14

12 September 2014

To parents and all associated with Holy Trinity Pewley Down School

I have received this week a letter from Richard Rowe announcing his retirement from the school after 25 years as head teacher, with effect from the end of this academic year. By next summer, Richard will also have completed 42 years’ service as a teacher within Surrey. Now is not the time for farewell speeches – we will do that in full in July. But I cannot let this moment pass without acknowledging publicly how much this neighbourhood of Guildford owes to Richard. He is a man of exceptional talent: a visionary leader, a brilliant educator, a man who is always worth listening to, and a charismatic leader who loves to draw out the talents of those he is with. It has been a delight and a privilege to know Richard for so long, and to have benefitted from his immense skill and friendship over many years.

The governors are meeting on Monday 15th September to set in motion the processes that will lead to a new appointment. We will be wanting to listen carefully to parents, children, staff and the community, about what is required to continue the excellence of this school and to take us forward into the next phase of our life together. We will be in touch with you all soon and look forward to your involvement soon. Please be ready to celebrate Richard in July 2015.

Best wishes
Robert Cotton
Chair of Governors

Week Commencing 15 September:
Monday 15 – Year 6 visit RHS Wisley
Monday 15 – 5C visit to RGS

Parking & Unofficial One Way – Addison Road
The Governors are very concerned and have asked us to draw your attention to parking in the area surrounding the school. Please would you park courteously and safely around the school entrance, this includes not parking on the yellow zig-zags and double yellow lines and having respect for our neighbours’ access. These measures are in place to protect our children. We also do try to operate an unofficial one-way system to ease congestion and speed up the process both in the morning and afternoon. The school should be approached from Pewley Way and then you should pass along Addison Road. We appreciate your support in this matter.

ParentPay
Once again we would like to encourage everyone to please activate your ParentPay account for all school payments, if you haven’t already done so. We can forward you a copy of your activation details if necessary. If you have any queries or if you have difficulties doing online card payments, then please contact me (Lesley in the finance office finance@holytrinity.surrey.sch.uk).

For those who have paid for the whole term or whole year lunches at the discount prices, after 26 September, we will uprate your payments to the full basic meal price.

Regular afterschool club users (Clubs Plus and Breakfast Club) should please keep their accounts in credit. Credit is only used when clubs are taken. All users should pay their outstanding balances at least monthly. We won’t be invoicing clubs anymore, so please set your FREE email ‘low balance alerts’ via the communications tab on your ParentPay account. Thanks a lot!

Year 5 Hampton Court trip payment
The letter re this trip didn’t say so (!!), but we would much prefer you to pay for the trip on ParentPay rather than with cheques. But please do send the consent form back into school. This is true for all upcoming school trips and payable activities.

Paying extra on school trips towards the hardship fund
At last night’s ‘meet the team’ gatherings, it was suggested that ParentPay should be set up so that extra could be added for the big trip payments as donations towards those who might find it difficult to meet the costs. However, it is impractical to set the total payable for the trips higher than the actual cost total, otherwise everyone’s balance outstanding just looks too large, which rather defeats the object. So there will be a ‘trip top-up’ item on ParentPay which anyone can choose and pay whatever they would like as extra. Of course, the best way to donate to the school – which includes the hardship fund – is by gift-aided giving, which brings the school an extra 25p in every £1. You can do this on the BTDonate giving website, or by standing order to the school – forms on the Donations page of the school website. Thanks very much.

For those who find the big trip costs too much, please speak to Richard, the class teacher or Lesley in confidence. There are funds for these purposes and no-one should feel excluded from this experience for financial reasons. Such assistance is entirely confidential.

School Clubs
There will be a choir session for all on Tuesday lunchtimes with Alison from 12.30 - 1pm in the music room. In addition, Alison will be running a Making a Meal of it club for year 6 children supported by our Change4Life project focusing on healthy eating. There will be a maximum number of 16 places which will be offered on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact Alison directly to book your place. All clubs can also be viewed here.

Dangerous Book Club
THIS CLUB IS NOW FULL, if you have not already mailed me about wanting a place, please do not send your child along, as I can only take 10 at a time. If you are interested in your child doing DBC, which is mainly science activities using books to follow instructions, I will be keeping a waiting list and swap groups over next term. All other Library Clubs (Chess, Creative Writing, Board Games, Lego and Myths) are available to all on a turn up and go basis.

Year 5 and 6 Parents
We are recommending that the children own a good quality dictionary and thesaurus. We have found that dictionaries marketed at junior schools are not sufficiently advanced for our children's needs, and consequently we are offering copies of the "Paperback Oxford Dictionary" and the companion Thesaurus at 7.99 each, and will be available until the end of next week. Payment can be made using Parentpay, or by cash/cheque. These books will see the children through their secondary school years. I am also taking orders for the CPG Spelling Rules book at £2.00 each.
