Dear Parents,

Another term and another assembly series. This time it is based around the great Bible character David. His life is a mixture of highs and lows, successes and failures. We are using him as an example of how we are all unique and uniquely loved. Another theme is looking at a story from both sides; at the infants this is clearly demonstrated by a court case each week where a class of children are asked to choose who is in the right and who is in the wrong within a series of fairy tales. This week, rather surprisingly, they chose the swindler to be in the right and the pompous emperor to be in the wrong in the story of the King’s New Clothes. I think this was down to Nicola’s clever arguments rather than the true rights and wrongs of the story. As always we hope that through all the stories and activities your children will gain a deeper knowledge of what life is all about. Our main message this week was ‘be yourself’.

We continue to teach children with a child centred approach, taking them from where they are to the peak of their potential. This will be a different journey for each child. Some educationalists and politicians seek to use the metaphor of each child being an empty vessel which can simply be filled up with knowledge. We prefer the image of a delicate plant which needs tender care to develop to be the best it can be. Two sides of the story; which side do you come down on? Next week the story is Beauty and the Beast – now I wonder what that could be a metaphor for?

Curriculum & Phonics Evening
Unfortunately there is a clash of times between PD and HT on Tuesday, with the Phonics Eve at the infants coinciding with the Curriculum evening at the juniors. Both meetings start at 7pm. At HT I am giving a short talk about the subject of homework, this is followed by the HTSC AGM. By 7.50pm the year groups should be meeting. This means that parents may well be able to attend the Phonics meeting and then move to HT for the year group talk.

Year 1 trip to Wisley, Tuesday 17 September
Oak and Beech classes are off to Wisley on Tuesday. Don’t forget to bring a packed lunch, water bottle and a coat. Please ensure you have returned your payment as well as your permission slip.

Year R
The Reception year children are settling in well and having fun in their new classes. Sarah and Sian are very proud of the way they are learning to become independent. We look forward to seeing you at the:

Teddy Bears’ picnic, Friday 20 September, 1.15 pm
Please bring a picnic blanket and meet us on the field if the weather is fine, or in the hall if it’s raining. There will be snacks provided for the children but if you bring younger siblings along you might want to bring a snack for them.

Meeting for new parent helpers, Wednesday 25 September, 2.30pm
This is an information meeting for parents in all year groups who might be thinking about helping in school this year. Please come along to the Pewley Down staffroom.

Pick up from football club
While the building work is going on please access the field via the lower entrance and the Rainbow Room (and not the car park). Thank you for your cooperation.

Christmas Card Design Competition 2013
Anne Milton MP is running a competition again this year for Guildford children aged 12 and under to design her Christmas card. Designs should be submitted on paper A4 maximum size and can be in any hand drawn medium. The winning picture will appear on the card reproduced at slightly smaller than A5 size. Please include name, age and school on reverse of design. Entries should be sent to: Anne Milton MP, Guildford Conservatives, 17a Home Farm, Loseley Park, Guildford GU3 1HS by Friday 25 October, 12.00 noon.
 


FOPS News

Annual General Meeting 
Thank you to all those who attended the AGM on Tuesday. We had a very good turn-out. The accounts for 2012-13 and Chairman's Report will be available on the FOPS notice board in the playground if you missed it. Sarah Bird was elected as Treasurer and Suzie Turner was re-elected as Secretary. We are still looking for a volunteer to chair the Committee this year. If you are interested and want to find out more, please speak to Emily Bourke (emilybourke@msn.com).

A huge thank-you to last year's Committee and Class Reps for all their hard work.

IQ Christmas Cards - Co-ordinator Needed!
Do you have a few hours spare this half term to co-ordinate a small fundraising project? We would like to run the IQ Christmas Card scheme again this year which raised over £450 for the school last year. This offers parents the chance to buy packs of Christmas cards with their child's design on. If you could help with this one, please speak to Emily Bourke.

Second Hand Uniform
We are also looking for someone to run the second hand uniform sales this year. This role only takes two or three hours a year! If you would be willing to take this on, please speak to Emily Bourke. Thank you to Clare Stone for doing this last year.

If you are in receipt of benefits such as Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or Child Tax Credit (where income does not exceed £16,190) you may be eligible for free school meals. Please contact Jane or Ruth in the office, in confidence, for a full list of qualifying benefits and an application form.

Lost:
Isabella Burman, Chestnut Class, has lost a pink Gap hoodie (named) – missing since before the summer holidays.
