HTPD 12/10/18

12 October 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

In our assemblies this week, we’ve reached the part in Moses’ story when he decides to face his fears and, in spite of not feeling up to the task, he goes back to Egypt and asks Pharaoh to set the Israelites free from slavery. The children reflected that it’s easier to overcome fears when you’re well supported by friends and family, and when you know that what you’re doing is important. Moses put aside his own inadequacies for the good of those who needed him. He also knew that God was with him – we prayed that as we love others, we’d be able to find strength to be brave. This theme seemed to perfectly fit with World Mental Health Day on Wednesday. With increasing numbers of UK children identifying as having poor mental health and significant anxieties, we are determined to ensure that HTPD is a place where “it’s ok not to be ok”, and where there is support to enable children to “embrace the future with hope and confidence”.

Today’s Fluffy provides a place for children, and teachers (!) to really enjoy themselves. It’s been fantastic this week to see the passion and commitment that teachers have shown getting ready for the day. I do hope that your children tell you about everything that they’ve got up to, and that they’ve made new friends and tried out new activities too.

Next week, as you know, we finish for the half term break on Wednesday lunch time (12 noon at the infants and 12.15 at the juniors). This allows us as a staff time to reflect on the year so far; we are all looking forward to being together, strengthening the team, sharing top teaching tips, unpacking our vision and values, and making sure that HTPD continues to be the wonderful place that it is.

After the break, we come back to school ready to celebrate Harvest. This will take place during school assemblies on Wednesday 31st October at the juniors (8.50am) and Thursday 1st November at the infants (9am). Do come along and join us if you would like to. As well as our usual Harvest collection of food parcels (dried goods, tea, biscuits, pasta, tins of soup etc.) for Guildford Action, who provide food for our local foodbanks, we will this year be collecting money to send to supply fresh water to the people affected by the recent tsunami in Indonesia. Perhaps the children might like to raise some money to donate by doing some helpful jobs over the holiday. Thank you in advance for your generosity. It’s great to see the children wanting to make a difference.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this start to the school year and wish you all a happy and relaxing half term break when it begins next week!

With best wishes, Clare

A word about school sports kit:
If your child has borrowed school sports kit for a match please can it be returned, washed and ready to wear as soon as possible.Do not hold on to it because you think your child might wear it again. We do not have an endless supply of kit and other children need to borrow kit for other fixtures. It is very sad for children who are looking forward to playing for a HT team only to find that there is no kit to wear because it has not been returned.

Alternatively if you let your property through Cavender they will donate £250 when the tenancy commences.

HTSC (Junior PTA)

Thank you to everyone who came to Rogues on Wednesday to kick off our fundraising year. It was great to meet you and we look forward to a great year

The Class Reps should be in contact with you all soon to start the ball rolling on social events so look out for that. We still desperately need them in 4N and 6T and 6JW. You can share the role amongst a few of you - and it would be really good to have Y6 represented for all the great events that Y6 look forward to in their last few months at HT!

Good luck to all of you going to Bingo night - look forward to seeing the photos.

We have a Facebook Page so please come and follow us - Holy Trinity School PTA. We also have a new logo so you can clearly see what is from us and what is from school. Let us know what you think.

Bonfire Night is fast approaching - details and how to get tickets will be out in bags before half term. We will also need volunteers to help before, during and after. It is a really good fun event in the school calendar, raises lots of money but does need help to keep it going. We will be sending out a Sign Up list (that seems the easiest way for everyone). Please look out for it

Phil The Bag is returning to school after half term and wants to collect all of your unwanted textiles – adult and children’s clothing, shoes, handbags, belts, hats, curtains, school uniform and bedding! The more we collect the more we raise!
You can bring your items in to HT and leave at the bottom of the ramps from drop-off on Monday 5th November until 9am on Wednesday 7thNovember after drop-off.

And before you know it Christmas will be upon us. The Christmas Fair is 30th November. So clear your diaries and come and have some fun, try your luck on the tombolas, pick up some stocking fillers, have a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie and raise lots of money for the school too!

05 October 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

Our Eco-teams have been busy at both sites already this term. It’s really inspiring to see the children thinking so carefully about being environmentally friendly, as well as challenging us all to look after the school resources and grounds. Can I on their behalf remind you all to avoid sending in snacks which have wrappers – healthy fruit and vegetable snacks work best. We really don’t like to see our beautiful school grounds spoiled with discarded plastic and cellophane. The junior school Eco-Squad have launched a poster competition and one of the entries really impressed me. Leo in Year 5 designed a poster to ask people not to litter, and he included the following text:

I care about animals.
I care about nature, but litter-bugs destroy the beautiful wonders of this planet.
If you stop littering, the school, country or even the planet could be a better place.

What an impressively global vision! Great stuff!

As the evenings get darker, can I remind parents who allow their children to walk home independently or who arrange to meet up off site, to talk to your children about what to do if the plan goes wrong. Please tell them to come back to school if they haven’t found you, and we can help them get in touch. Also remind them not to change their plans of their own accord and to stick with the morning arrangements! Remember also that after school clubs finish promptly and children not collected on time will be asked to go to Clubs+ to make sure they’re safe (see below for details). Similarly in the morning children arriving before 8.30 at the juniors will be asked to go to Breakfast Club. Thank you for your support with this.

Next Friday is our first Fluffy Friday of the year. For those new to the school, it’s a brilliant way for children to work with others outside of their usual class group (the children in Reception will do activities in their own year group for this first Fluffy!). Children have the opportunity to try out something new and experience learning in a different context. It’s one of the things that children remember most fondly about the school when they move on to secondary. We would love help next Friday if you’re available – just speak to your child’s class teacher or email Helen Pronger (
helenp@htpd.surrey.sch.uk), especially if you’re happy to go off site.

Have a great weekend everyone – and if you missed National Poetry Day on Thursday this week, do enjoy reading some poems together as a family over the weekend. I shared several poems across the school, reading The Owl and the Pussy Cat to Year 3, On the Ning Nang Nong to Year R, The Land of the Bumbley Boo to Years 1 and 2, James James Morrison Morrison to Year 4 and Ode to Autumn to Year 5. I’m hoping to fit in Year 6 at some point before the end of school today!

With best wishes, Clare

INFANT AND JUNIOR

Half term and Inset days
Please remember that school finishes for the half term break on Wednesday 17th October at 12 o’clock at the infants, and 12.15 at the juniors. We start back on Monday 29th October.

Free School Meal Eligibility
If you believe you may be eligible for free school meals and have not yet registered please contact the school office as soon as possible. All enquiries will of course be treated in complete confidence. If you do meet the eligibility criteria the school may then be able to claim some additional funding called Pupil Premium. At the infants, where all children receive a free meal at lunchtime, it is still really helpful if you can let us know if you are eligible so that we can claim the funding.

INFANT

Fluffy Friday, 12 October
Children should come to school in their own clothes (not uniform) next Friday and bring in £1 to help cover the cost of materials. Class teachers will let the children know which activity they will be doing and whether any special clothing is needed. More details in Clare’s letter above.
We do have one un-named fluffy form in the office (choices are: cooking - 1, pottery - 2, pond dipping - 3)?

Teacher-led club cancellations, 16 October
Unfortunately we have had to cancel Lego Club and Ping Pong and Puzzles on Tuesday 16 October.

Year 2 transfer to junior School (Year 3) – September 2019
We have had a few enquiries about transfer to junior school. The Surrey County Council on-line system opens on 29 October 2018 and closes on 15 January 2019. If you have a child in Year 2 you will need to complete the on-line application form: www.surreycc.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/schools/school-admissions as well as the junior Supplementary Information form (available from either school office).
If you would like to have a look round at the juniors, tours start next Wednesday 10 October – please ring the HT office (01483 539033) to book a place.

Lost
Faith Welch, Hazel Class, has lost her new (un-named) Nightingale cardigan.

Spare clothes
We keep a supply of spare clothes in the school office but unfortunately our supplies are dwindling. Please return any clothes your child may have borrowed. Also, if you have any boys’ or girls’ pants or socks which are outgrown or no longer needed we would love to have them.

Menu: week 2 beginning 8 October

HTSC News

First Meeting – Wednesday 10th October 8pm at Rogues
Come and say hello, have a glass of wine and let us know what you want to see happen this year – another ball? More year group activity? Different stalls at the school fairs? Do exactly what we did last year? We are here to raise money for the school any way we can – so throw us your ideas! You don’t need to be a class rep!

Talking of which, thank you for EVERYONE who has volunteered to be a Class Rep. We are still short in 4N and 6JW – we really need your input for the special activities that happen for the Y6 child in their last year. Please let us know if you can help. Please also keep sending back your contact forms so we can let you know what is going on.

Bingo - Saturday 13th October – still time to sign up and come along to the first HTSC event of the year. Bring your legs eleven and your two fat ladies – open the garden gate, buckle your shoe and come have some fun! Don’t forget your names will be on the door – no fiddly tickets to lose.

Bonfire Night - 2nd November - details will be out next week. If you don’t have the time to be a class rep, could you give one-off help on this project? It is such a great night in the school calendar and we could do with help to keep it on track. If you would be happy to be involved please let us know, or pop along to Rogues (we promise to buy anyone who volunteers a drink – we are resorting to bribery already!)

You can find us at HTSC@htpd.surrey.sch.uk, often in the playground and we hope to get the HTSC Facebook page up and running again soon!

Half term fun for all the family! Guildford Borough Council has collated some useful information on activities for children and young people taking place in Guildford over the October half term. Details of playschemes, arts and crafts, sports activities, family days out and much more can be found on our website: www.guildford.gov.uk/holidayactivities
