17 October 2014

Dear Parents,
I have just been revising the Home-School Agreement document with Emma Laporte who is one of our Parent Governors. I will hope to send out the revised document for you to see after half term. I like the document not because it is a binding legal contract, but because it is a series of values and beliefs to which we all sign up.

A big part of the agreement is that we do our best to work in partnership with each other. To that end I am asking you to spend a few minutes with your child filling in the One Page Profile which is available here or in hard copy from either of the school offices. At Pewley Down parents have already been asked to do this in hard copy form, but are also able to do it electronically if you have not yet completed the hard copy.

The form needs your child’s name and a photo. Then there are three questions to complete with your child:
1. What is important to me?
2. What do people like about me and what do I like about myself?
3. How best to support me?
When you have completed the form please send it to
hts@holytrinity.surrey.sch.uk or info@pewleydown.surrey.sch.uk. We hope that this information will really help us meet the needs of your child even more.

We hope you will enjoy this time of chatting these things through with your child; this will form part of our discussions with you in parents’ evenings after half term.
With best wishes, Richard

Half term
A reminder that school finishes for the half term holiday at 12.00 on Wednesday 22 October.
We start back again on Monday 3 November.
As we are drawing near to the end of a busy half term we would like to thank you again for your support and wish you a very happy half term break.

Fluffy Friday: All the children had a fantastic day enjoying our first Fluffy Friday of the year. Year R took part in a carousel of different activities meeting friends from the other class. Year 1 and 2 enjoyed activities ranging from science and making a room in a box to adventure run and basketball.

Retirement: After 25 years at Pewley Down, Brian Terry, our wonderful caretaker, has announced his retirement at the end of November. We will be presenting him with a gift from the school, but if you would also like to contribute please bring your donation to the school office where there will also be a card to sign.

Reminder to Year 2 parents of 6 year olds:
If you would like your Year 2 child to take place in the research project run by the University of Surrey, investigating colour perception, consent forms should be returned to the school office by Monday 20 October. Information about the project was sent out last week. The team from the University will be visiting Pewley Down on Tuesday 21 October.

PUPS Plus:
There are still limited spaces available for PUPS Plus over the half-term holiday. If you are interested, the form is available on the website under ‘Before and After School’ or email pups@pewleydown.surrey.sch.uk.

Operation Christmas Child:
We will be launching our annual Operation Christmas Child appeal after half term but if you would like to get ahead over the half term break we will be collecting the usual shoe boxes filled with small toys, school supplies, toiletries and other items such as gloves, hats and hair accessories. More information after half term.

Our special guest, Hannah from Boogie Pumps, will be starting the dancing at 6pm so be there if you want to join in with Hannah. You will then be able to view the photos on line and order them from her (£5 for the first photo).
PS If you forget to go to the cash point, we will be able to give you cash back on cheques on the night. The Photo Booth will also be accepting cheques.

Pewley Book Drive: FOPS has committed to spend £1,500 from funds raised last year to provide more reading books for the classroom and library books. The school would like to extend the reading range and add some exciting new books as some of them are showing their age. We would however like to raise an additional £500 to meet our £2,000 target. You will therefore be receiving a letter in your child's book bag asking you to consider making a donation specifically towards reading books. If you wish, a sticker will be put in one of the new books to recognise your donation. Please read the letter and consider making a small donation so that we can meet this target.

Please remember school closes at 1200 on Wednesday 22 October for INSET days and Half Term –

We return to school on Monday 3 November

Outstanding amounts payable: It would be great if we could end the half term with accounts settled. Could I ask you to please check your balances on ParentPay for services you use and trips and pay outstanding amounts. We will send home invoices early next week with your children if you have any balances outstanding – but it would be great to pre-empt the need for invoicing. It’s all on ParentPay!! We were pleased with the large number of parents who took advantage of the termly and annual discount for lunch credits. But balances on other services (Clubs) or trips are still payable. Thanks very much, Lesley

Clubs Plus would be grateful for any board games which you might be able to donate.

Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Appeal – a leaflet giving guidance on filling a shoe box for children overseas in very difficult living situations has been sent home. This year the boxes from the Guildford area will be going to Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan. The deadline for returning boxes to school is Friday 14th November. A special assembly with a member of the Guildford Samaritan’s Purse Shoe Box Team takes place on Monday 3rd November. Thank you for your support.

Dear Parents,

This term in assembly we are following the life of Moses through its ups and downs. He was just like us all in many ways: quick tempered, great leader, blew it when all was going well, ready with excuses when he got it wrong. Our lives are a mixture of good and bad decisions, times when we get it right and times when it all goes wrong. All through this Moses kept his line of conversation with God open. He listened, ignored, disobeyed and negotiated with God and ended up leading his people towards the promised land. Moses was, above all, God’s person for that particular time. With all his strengths and weaknesses God used him to lead the enslaved Israelites. We are looking for a new leader and I do hope you will join me in praying for God’s person to come forward. It is a huge responsibility for the governors so please pray for them too.

Next Friday,10 October is Harvest Festival at both schools. We will once again be seeking to help the local homeless, through the No. 5 project. Please send dry, canned, or bottled foods and anything else which is non-perishable as a harvest gift to them and to remember all the good gifts we receive from our Heavenly Father.

With best wishes, Richard

For all parents of Year 6 students – may we remind you that the deadline for secondary applications is the 31st October.
