Junior 19/10/12

19 October 2012

Dear Parents

Well it’s been a great week, everyone seems to have enjoyed the 200th birthday celebrations. We have enjoyed our open afternoon and tea party, our thanksgiving service and our bicentenary concert. It has been great meeting many former pupils and staff. Two ladies who were 92 and started at the school in 1925 were among our visitors. We were pleased to find out that we had two MPs; a shadow Minister and a Minister of State, who were former pupils. They both sent us messages of support.

The concert last night was excellent with two operatic sopranos as our leading performers: both pupils in the nineties. We have had great visitors from the past in our morning assemblies, this morning was Alison’s son, Josh, who is now an Army Captain.

One thing we try to do at Holy Trinity is to open children up to all the possibilities that life could hold for them and certainly not to close any possibilities down. So I hope that seeing what former pupils have done will further expand their horizons.

For me the 200th anniversary marks the great progress we have made in so many ways. No longer do we have ill-fed, dirty and ragged children in schools. Teachers are more professional and children much better behaved. Staying the same is the unrelenting pressure of external forces on the school. In the past this led to a system of payment by results, today a system where the schools considered less than good, in a snapshot inspection, are pressurised still further and headteachers often dismissed!

I feel very privileged to be following after a group of school leaders who gave their very best to make the school a place where children could thrive and develop in a caring environment. The Victorian Motto was the single word ‘duty’ , the early twentieth century was ‘Fear God, Serve the King’ and now of course we have the all-encompassing ‘Learn to Live’. All three pointing the children to see beyond themselves and the mundane to higher and greater horizons – I hope that we will continue to do this in the future.

With best wishes, Richard

Please note that Pewley Down will close on Wednesday at midday.

Christmas Production Rehearsal Schedule
I apologise to those who were expecting the rehearsal schedule to be posted on the board today. This week has been a trifle hectic with our 200th birthday celebrations, but the schedule will be available on Monday 22nd October. There will be a copy posted on the board and cast members may collect a copy either at 10.35am (break time) or at 3.15pm. Please do not come at any other time as it is very disruptive to 3S! Thank you.

Netball
Well done to all of our netballers who have had some great results at the beginning of the season. The year 5's secured a 6-1 win and a draw against Tormead and a 6-3 win at St.Teresa's. The year 6 teams have played in two tournaments; at the GHS tournament they managed three wins and three losses and at the mini SSP tournament this week, two wins and a draw. It's great to see so many enthusiastic netballers!

Biathlon
Congratulations to all of our biathletes who managed the early 8am start at Crawley last weekend to deliver some great performances in both their swimming and running. There were 580 competitors over the age groups and the atmosphere was wonderful. Everyone made a huge effort. Top ten results included William Ho who secured 8th out of 58 in his swim and 13th overall, Jessica Bilivodska who got 9th in her swim out of 90 and 17th overall and Tilly Gough who came 3rd in her run out of 90 and 10th overall.  The Year 6 boys’ team of William, George and Lucas also improved on last year's result to get 4th place out of 14 teams.

Thanks to all of the parents for their commitment and support.

Parking
Please remember that car parking is very restricted in the school car park whilst The Chapel is being built. If you are going to stay for more than a short time please park on the lower playground – basketball court.

It is important that the entrance and exit to the lower playground and basketball court are kept clear to allow staff and visitors to arrive and leave in the morning and at the end of the day. Parents are asked to ensure that all children are closely supervised at this time for their own safety.

The Royal British Legion
From Monday poppies will be on sale at the Front Office, for a donation in excess of 20p per poppy. Please try and support this wonderful charity.
