HTPD 30/11/18

30 November 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week, we enjoyed showing four Danish teachers around the school on a visit as part of our European link with schools in Denmark, funded through Erasmus+. They were particularly looking at how we support children in their learning, and we were pleased that they noted how inclusive our approach is. They loved seeing our philosophy of “learning to live” in action; they were keen to tell the children how impressed they were by their courtesy, respect and love of school. Some of the children also enjoyed hearing from them about life in Denmark, and how Christmas is celebrated in Aalborg.

With the busy-ness of the Christmas season about to begin, it was wonderful this week to spend time during assemblies thinking about being still, reminding each other about how to relax, and also considering how our well-being improves if we take a regular break. God’s good idea of taking a rest day each week seems even more important in the frenetic Surrey lives we sometimes get caught up in – I hope you all take some time this weekend to pause and unwind! I’m determined to turn off my emails, spend time with my family and forget about my to do list, even if it is just for one day!

Before that though, it’ll be great to enjoy the Christmas fair tonight at the junior school. Thank you so much to the HTSC committee for getting it all ready, and thank you as well for your generous donations – it’s sure to be a great event! Can I ask you to please take responsibility for your children during the evening – it’s not safe for children to wander outside or play in the dark.

And then next week we welcome all of you to be our audiences for the Christmas shows. This year at all of the performances, once we’ve covered our costs, we’ll be raising money for Shooting Star Chase once more. This is a wonderful local charity that provides respite care for children who are profoundly ill with very complex conditions, so I do hope you will feel able to help support our fundraising. It’s always a very special week, but the children do get extremely tired. Please make sure that they get enough sleep! At the juniors, although after school clubs are still on, I’d recommend children head home at 3.15pm if that’s possible – it’s a long week of late nights.

On Friday 7th we have our optional late start. The children can come into school anytime up to 10.30am. At the juniors, they should come straight into the hall for a candle-lit Christmas assembly, and at the infants they can go to their classrooms as usual. It allows for a bit of a lie-in for any children who are worn out after a week of being on stage!

Finally, a reminder that we will be enjoying Christmas dinner at both sites next week (Thursday at the infants and Friday at the juniors). If your children are not having a school lunch, they might like to have a festive theme to their packed lunch…and they’d all be welcome to wear a Christmas hat, jumper or sprig of tinsel too! After all, Advent begins next week and so the Christmas preparations can begin!
With best wishes, Clare

23 November 2018

Dear parents and carers

It was great today to see the children in mufti – both to mark the end of Road Safety Week at the infants, and to encourage Christmas fair donations at the juniors. I hope our infants in particular have learnt some important lessons about staying safe on the roads – maybe they can talk to you and any older siblings about what they’ve been taught…and if you didn’t manage to donate for the fair, there is still time next week!

With the sudden drop in temperature, it feels like the season has finally changed. I hope you saw the lovely photo on Twitter of children enjoying the last remnants of Autumn, sweeping up leaves in the Pewley playground. Active Andy is always so imaginative – he encouraged the children to sweep the leaves into the shape of the Holy Trinity Star; our school symbol takes the Christian symbol of the Trinity, and for us it stands for living life in all its fullness! It’s been great to be outside even in the cold weather!

Do remember though, that with the winter months upon us, the children really do need outdoor layers for playtime and lunch break. This needs to be a waterproof coat as we will still go outside even if its drizzly. Coats, hats, scarves and gloves are all essential when it’s cold. Please make sure all items are named and do talk to your child about looking after their own belongings. Helen and I were amazed when we visited schools in Finland in the summer. The culture there means that children as young as 6 were so much more independent and responsible than children in the UK. We saw no lost property or untidy cloakrooms. Children seemed to value their equipment and belongings too. Perhaps we could learn from them! Please do encourage your child to wear the correct school uniform – it really helps to build a sense of pride in belonging to the school. Keep nail varnish, jewellery, fancy-dress hairbands and brightly coloured tops for wearing at home – or for mufti days! Thank you.

Do see the notices below about our school plays – we’d love to have everyone visit and enjoy them! At the juniors this year, we’re using an electronic booking system but do let the office know if you don’t have online access and Geraldine will be able to help you.

With best wishes, Clare

You'll see a difference in their wellbeing and in their topics of conversation! Thank you so much for your support.

HTSC News

Thank you to everyone for the donations that were coming in thick and fast today.  It is going to be a good fair.  We still needs lots more of everything but especially bottles, home produce and chocolate.  If you can pop a few extra things in your shopping basket over the weekend that would be great.  The donation station will be there all week for the children to drop things off.

The Class Reps have all been working really hard and Signups have gone out for volunteers and for hampers - so if you haven’t signed up please do.  And if your skill is making up hampers you can donate your time and skill and make the hamper for your year!

We’d like to thank Cavenders for its generous support of the Fair again this year.  They have been a long term partner of the HTSC and we are very grateful for all that they do.  If you have a house to sell or rent, they are an excellent independent agent at the top end of town.  And if you do go with them - they’ll make another donation to the school - £500 if they sell your house £250 if you rent it.  So why not give them a try.

Gentle reminder that colouring competition is still open - so if it’s too cold to go out this weekend that’s an option to pass some time!
Look forward to seeing you all at the Fair next week and keep the donations coming.

16 November 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

What an exciting and full week it has been! It was great to welcome our new Reception parents to their first school parents’ evening, together with all those with children in Year 1 and 2. Then today we’ve been wowed by the talents of Year 3 as they’ve entertained us with their musical production of Noah. The children at the junior school spent time praying for peace and reflecting on the centenary of the end of World War 1. Some children in Year 6 took part in a science workshop at King Edward’s School in Witley, the children in Year 2 marvelled at the splendour of St Paul’s Cathedral on a day trip to London, some of our young carers were invited as the Mayor’s guests to help with the switching on of the Christmas lights, and then the Mayor joined us for our Friday assembly at the juniors to talk about his role and why he has given so much time and energy to the town! Phew! We’ll all be glad to have a rest this weekend!

All of this positivity, energy and joy was slightly marred when I heard from some of the residents in our local community. They were so disappointed, as I am, that some of our families have been disrespectful to them in the way that they are using the roads and parking spaces around the school. We often talk to the children about behaving respectfully and treating one another as we would like to be treated. Can I ask all of our parents to do the same? Please stay calm when trying to park, leave the permit spaces, private roads, driveways and zigzags clear – and speak politely to residents who live nearby and who are patiently waiting for peace to return to their road once school is finished for the day. Do consider parking up further away from the school and walking the last part of the journey. Thank you so much for supporting the school values in this way.

Next week, I know that with it being Road Safety Week, we’ll be talking to the children about the importance of good road sense. At Pewley on Friday 23rd, the children will be joining in with National Road Safety Day and wearing bright colours to remind them of the importance of being seen. Please do take this opportunity to reinforce with your children the key safety messages about being careful near to traffic, crossing roads safely, and getting out kerbside, rather than into the road.

We’ll also be getting closer to the Christmas plays with rehearsals taking place in all year groups. Take a look at the dates below so that you make sure you can come along to one of the performances!

With best wishes, Clare

We are trying not to send so many ParentMails (feedback was that there were too many) so please follow the HTSC on Facebook if you are on it (and tell your friends), and remember to have a look at this bit of the newsletter and talk to your class reps – there are lots of festive drinks being planned! Dear Parents and Carers,

With this week’s assembly theme being gratitude and thankfulness, I’m sure you’ll want to join me in thanking the new HTSC committee for the superb fireworks and bonfire night that they hosted last Friday evening. It was just great to see the whole school community enjoying itself! It’s one of my favourite events of the year! I want to thank in particular our two new HTSC chairs, Sally and Stef. Both of whom have already given so much time and energy to their new role. It’s always exciting to see what fresh ideas and new inspiration come with new leaders in place. Do remember to encourage them and please do offer to help as well; like the majority of our parents working fulltime, they really do need offers of help, even just a spare half an hour would be so appreciated. I know both HTSC and FOPS would love volunteers to get ready for the Christmas fairs. And don’t forget to tell them what a fantastic job they’re doing!

With changes to data protection and privacy laws, it’s been a real challenge for the new committees to communicate with you. They need your permission to add your details to their class lists. We are not able to pass on your details to them, I’m afraid. This may explain why class reps haven’t been in touch yet (just a quick aside, 4N parents, we are still looking for class reps for you; do consider taking on the role to make sure 4N doesn’t miss out!). Try to stay involved by reading the HTSC and FOPS section of the weekly newsletter too. Our PTAs do such a great job, both raising vital funds for the school, and also bringing us all together as a school community to have fun together.

It’s been lovely this week to meet all our junior school parents at this term’s parent consultation meetings and next week it’s the turn of our infant families. If you haven’t managed to book an appointment, do let either school office know or email your child’s class teacher. It’s such a vital part of our partnership together in supporting your child’s learning journey.

Finally, it’s been wonderful this afternoon to celebrate the musical talents of our house music performers. For some, the junior school house music medley is a culmination of years of hard work and dedicated rehearsal, and for others who have just begun their musical journey, it provides just the encouragement that they need, sharing their first performance with the whole school. What a lot of talent there is at HTPD!

With best wishes,
 Clare

Thought of the week: God at work – supplying our needs. Are you a grateful person?

Whole school notice:
Please make sure that any snacks, packed lunches, or birthday treats do not contain nuts. We have several children in almost every class across the school with significant allergies. We are a nut-free school to keep children with allergies to nuts safe. Please do remember to make sure you help us with this and do not send any nuts into school! All snacks should be fruit or vegetables only; this also supports our healthy school policy and keeps us litter free too.

HTSC News

Thank you to everyone who came to the Bonfire last Friday (was it really a week ago!). It was a great night and we hope you and your children enjoyed it as much as we did. And a huge thank you for all your Phil the Bag donations - we will find out soon how much we raised. Next is the Christmas Fair (30th November) and we are having a meeting at Rogues next Tuesday 13 November at 8pm. Come along for a glass of wine, chin-wag and talk about how we can all put on a brilliant Fair this year.

We have class reps in all classes (listed below) except 4N (come on you know you want to!) and they are in the process of organising nights out, coffee mornings and all sorts of other things - including the world famous (ok maybe that’s a little exaggeration) Holy Trinity Christmas Hampers. Please make sure your rep has your contact information, and look out for emails or WhatsApp groups with all the details. We know that you don’t want to be bombarded with HTSC ParentMails, so while we finalise the contact details for the school it would be great if you can check the PTA Facebook page for additional information and also have a look on here - and if you can let your friends know that too (we appreciate not everyone reads this, that would be great!) We will also say what we have sent out each week so you know if you are missing a form or anything.

Raffle tickets and things we need for the school fair should be out next week - anyone who can spare some time to help collate tickets and letters early next week, please let us know - many hands make light work!

Tea Towel orders really need to be in by Monday 12 November at the very latest.

Colouring Competition should be coming out very soon

Volunteers for decorating the school - along an Oliver theme still needed

School Xmas Fair is November 30th

Play Week the week after - we will need help for mulled wine, beer and mince pie selling!

If you have any comments, or thoughts on how we can make the HTSC work better for you and the school - do please let us know, we’ll be at Rogues next Tuesday.

Looking for a Pre-School?
Christ Church Pre-School Playgroup opened in 1973 and has long been a part of the local educational community.  It is strongly supported by a lovely network of parents and carers. We are looking for more families to join us and are warmly welcoming children, from age 2 1/2 yrs onwards, to start with us this educational year and next. We are located on Waterden Road in Christ Church Hall, a bright, large hall with plenty of indoor space, plus a garden and outdoor play area.  We are open four mornings and one afternoon per week. For an informal chat, please speak to Zoe Jeffries (Mum of Lexi - Hazel), Susie Grundy (Mum of Heidi - Beech) or Hannah Hayden (Mum of Emme - Beech). To arrange a visit directly, please contact manager Jo Smith on 07867 918877 or email christchurchpreschoolenquiries@gmail.com.

HTPD 2/11/18

02 November 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you so much for your generous donations to our Harvest appeal this week. It was just magnificent to see the display of food at both our infant and junior Harvest celebrations and to count up the money sent in for the Indonesian Disaster Fund. We’ve raised at least £200 (with the final total still going up!) as well as stocking up the Salvation Army food bank for the people of Guildford who find themselves in a time of need. It was so good to see the children wanting to make a difference. The joy expressed in song and prayers in both assemblies was just great with children talking about it all in the playground for the rest of the week. A visit to Pewley from Robert Cotton, our chair of governors made it all the more memorable as he described his attempts to grow his own mint for his wife’s mint tea!

Next week, we begin a fortnight of parent-teacher meetings (do get in touch with your child’s class teacher if you have not yet made an appointment). Come along ready to share in an update of your child’s learning journey, do take a look at their work and find something great that they’ve done to celebrate with them. I read this week that praise in childhood is an important protective factor against poor teenage mental health – it’s so important to let the children hear how proud we are of them. Do let us know at the meetings any information that might help us better to support them, both academically and in their wider development. Please do ask questions if there’s anything you’re not sure about, and let us know if we can help with ideas about supporting learning at home.

You may have seen on our website earlier in the year the exciting news that we have been awarded the International Schools Award. Thanks to Helen Pronger’s hard work and determination, our international links have been recognised as a strength of the school. It’s been wonderful to see the impact of our international families on school life. We are so grateful to those of you that have made a contribution to the children’s learning, to those that have shared with the classes an understanding of life overseas and brought an international flavour to our curriculum To give you a taste of some of the different activities that we’ve been involved with, we’ve compiled a photo-story board; you’ll be able to take a look at this when you come in for your parent-teacher meeting. At the juniors it’ll be on display at the school entrance at the top of the ramp, before moving up to the infants for the following week.

I’m looking forward to seeing most of you at our annual Bonfire and Fireworks Night this evening. Do come along even if you haven’t bought an early bird ticket. Please make sure that your child/children are supervised while at the event – it’s easy to get lost in the dark! Talk to them about what to do if they can’t find you. I will be standing at the gate at the top of the steps up from the car park, so that makes a good rendezvous. I’m sure it’ll be a fun evening; it’s always such a fantastic whole school event!

With best wishes, Clare

HTSC News

Welcome back to what is a slightly crazy half term HTSC wise! We know we ask a lot from you this term and we are very grateful for all your support. We will send a ParentMail out next week with everything for the term on it and I am sure your class Reps will keep you up to date (4N have you got anyone to take on this vital role yet?)

Really looking forward to one of (if not THE) best night in the school calendar tonight. The Bonfire Night and Fireworks display is always a brilliant night out and with burgers, sausages (and veggie ones!) drinks, donuts and glow sticks, what’s not to like? And the weather forecast is for it to be dry!
We always need helpers on Sunday to clear up the metal debris so, if you can spare an hour on Sunday at 11 am, we’d be really thankful (if you have a wheelbarrow all the better!). Big shout out to Ben Simmons who has bought us lots of wood and pallets! Thank you, Ben!

Phil The Bag is next week - they will take things in any state - even if it’s not good enough for the charity shop, it’s good enough for Phil. Pants, socks, towels, sheets, shoes. You name it. Great opportunity for a pre-Christmas clear out - make room for the obligatory novelty socks, jumpers and hankies! The more you get rid of, the more money we make!! So bring in your bags from Monday to Wednesday and leave them inside the atrium at the bottom of the ramp. Please do not bring them after Wednesday evening as school have no way of disposing of items that miss the collection.

Last call for Tea Towel Orders! Our order needs to go off on Monday for Christmas delivery. We may have a few spares at the Christmas Fair - which is 30th November!

Talking of Christmas
- thank you to the three people who turned up to the first meeting. The next one is on 13th December at Rogues - 8 pm. Maybe the thought of wine will entice some more of you - we really could do with the support!

Important Dates

5 November - Tea Towel last order
30 November - Christmas Fair
4-6 December - Play Week

FOPS NEWS (Infant PTA)

Tea towel booking forms should be in by next Monday the 5th November. They will make great Christmas presents, so why not order a few extra! If you didn't find the form in your child's book bag this week please bring money with you on Monday and order with Ruth. They are £4 each or £10 for 3.

Phil the Bag is on Wednesday 7th November! If you haven't cleared your cupboards over the half term then there is still time to do it this weekend. Please bring your unwanted clothes, shoes, bags, belts, hats and household linen in regular bin liners and leave them at the school on the grass verge in front of the staff room by 9am. The heavier the bag, the more we raise!

School Disco, Saturday 10th November 5.30pm - 7.30pm. We have ordered the sweets, the glow sticks and the DJ is compiling your requested play list! Thank you to all who have done their booking forms already. Your names will be on a VIP list at the door. If you haven't done so there is still time to do it next week. The most popular song request is Shot Gun and we will be playing Baby Shark too :)

! Disco help needed. We have created SignUp links through which you can pick your preferred time slot. This system is very easy to use and doesn't need you to register, just enter your name and email address. SignUp doesn't share your email with anyone!
