HTPD 24/11/17

24 November 2017

Dear parents

Last night there was a meeting at the junior school for prospective parents. It was a great evening with teachers describing all the different opportunities on offer from years 3-6. Hearing them talk about the curriculum, Nick describe our sporting provision, together with Geraldine, our librarian outlining our philosophy of instilling a love of reading, I was reminded of how our ethos of “learning to live” is fully embedded throughout everything we do. It is an exciting time of year as new families and children begin their journey with us at HTPD. Do encourage families with children in Year 2 or about to start in Reception to come along and visit. There are still opportunities for tours around both sites during the school day.

Year 2 had a wonderful start to the week with a trip to St Paul’s Cathedral – I was especially pleased to hear how excellent the children’s behaviour was whilst out and about, as well as how interested they all were in the history and architecture of the building. Trips like this are so important; they give children a memorable day, widen their horizons and build their independence and confidence. They do however add to a teacher’s workload, requiring thorough planning, careful organisation and every moment having to be watched over to keep the children safe. I am so grateful to our teaching staff for going this extra mile!

Thank you for all the donations for the junior school Christmas fair which takes place next Friday. It marks the start of Advent and is the first of our Christmas events! Thank you as well to the team of parents who worked hard last Sunday to make the infant outdoor areas so tidy. At the juniors do consider purchasing a tea-towel with your child’s self-portrait on it. These make lovely reminders of childhood long into the future! And do take a look at the school calendar and JTLYK pages for all the special Christmas events taking place between now and the end of term.

Have a great weekend.

With best wishes
Clare

HTPD 17/11/17

17 November 2017

Dear Parents,

Having seen so many of you over the last two weeks at our parents’ consultations, I’ve been able to say how impressed I’ve been with the children’s learning attitudes this term. In case I missed some of you, I’ll repeat my comments here. So many of the children really have been working hard, taking on challenges, learning to collaborate, showing pride in their finished work and behaving so respectfully. It’s been a great term so far! Thank you for working alongside us in so many ways to make sure that your children’s progress is a priority! If you haven’t yet managed to meet your child’s teacher, do make an appointment. It really is important to discuss how they’re getting on and we want to hear from you – it’s an important part of the whole picture!

Huge congratulations to Year 3 for an amazing performance last week of “Wackadoo Zoo” – it was lovely to see all the children brimming with enthusiasm and confidence, singing and acting so well. The important message that each one of us is special and unique fitted in so perfectly with our school values! It was brilliant to have so many parents able to join us for the show. Similarly, how great to see so many of you at the infants’ family disco last weekend. What a great community! We’ve been talking to the children this week in assembly about belonging to a team and it’s good to have Holy Trinity Pewley Down as an example of a team that works so well!

Years 3-6 will be beginning a new mental maths challenge in the next couple of weeks, “Mathstronauts”. It’s a weekly challenge that they will take part in to practise their number fluency and times table recall. Do ask your child about it and help them to get ready for lift off by practising at home! Tom (our maths leader) will be sending out some more information on this soon.

Have a great weekend everyone!

With best wishes
Clare

Year 6 Christmas Drinks – Friday 8 December

Crossroads Care Surrey, a charity based in Leatherhead, help to provide support for families who are hard pressed to look after a sick relative, and helps to provide respite for the carer which is very beneficial and supportive. To help raise funds for this worthwhile cause, this is a special appeal from David Stokes, HTAG, for everyone to come carol singing this year and encourage others to come too! There has been a long tradition of community carol singing around the streets of Holy Trinity. It makes for a lovely evening for all concerned: local children and parents are always made welcome outside homes and the singers are not only uplifted by the carols, but enjoy mulled wine and baked potatoes at the finish too! This year they are starting at the Albany pub in Sydenham Road at 7pm and singing around the streets of Charlotteville from 7.30pm, finishing at Gina's in Addison Road with Yule-tide refreshments. You do not have to be able to sing or know all the carols! Leader, Stephen Wright, provides the words and will lead you in roughly the right key! So put the date in your diary now: Wednesday, 13th December, meet 7pm at The Albany Pub.

To raise funds for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care
, one of our parents, Jenny Panman, endured a firewalk of 5 metres across hot coals on Bonfire Night! If you would like to donate towards this worthy cause, please https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jenny-panman

10 November 2017

Dear parents

Firstly, thank you so much for everyone’s patience and understanding whilst we faced the disruption of a major power cut on Monday. The children were so calm and unflustered, despite there being no water, telephones, lights or heating at the junior school until late into Monday evening. Power did come back more quickly at the infants, but by then we’d decided to close both sites. We have been in touch with Parentmail about the delay in delivery of the email information and they are extremely sorry for the difficulties that some of our parents experienced. We are reviewing our emergency communications and will let you know if we make any changes. Thank you for your flexible and adaptable approach. It was lovely to see so many parents working together! If the email never actually arrived in your inbox, please do get in touch with us.

It’s been really great to catch up with so many of you at the infant school parents’ evenings this week, and wonderful to find out from you how settled and happy your children are in their classes and how much you’ve enjoyed hearing about their progress. I’m sure the juniors will be just as encouraging next week (please do take note that some of the teacher-led clubs will not be on next week –see below for details). It really is amazing to see how much work has been covered already this term! Thank you for your ongoing partnership in your child’s learning journey, and for your interest in the details of how best to support them at home. I hope you found the consultations useful as well.

It was amazing to see how many children took part in the junior school house Bake Off challenge earlier in the week. I was astounded by the creativity and imagination shown in preparing an individual cup cake. The teachers and house captains really enjoyed judging the entries and it was tough to choose finalists for the technical challenge; Alison then had an excellent morning on Thursday, inspiring four house teams of four children from across the school to create amazing Gingerbread Sleighs, complete with reindeer! Fantastic show-stoppers!

I’m looking forward to seeing the Year 3 children tomorrow taking part in their first junior school production. I’m told rehearsals for Wackadoo Zoo have been very successful and lots of fun, so I’m sure the actual performance will be excellent! I’ll miss seeing a whole zoo-full of onesies trouping around the school next week…but then again, as we start to rehearse for the Christmas show, perhaps the fun will continue!

Have a great weekend!

With best wishes
Clare

HTPD 3/11/17

02 November 2017

Dear Parents,

I’m looking forward to seeing most of you at our annual Bonfire and Fireworks Night this evening. Do come along even if you haven’t bought an early bird ticket. It’s always such a fantastic whole school event! I love to see the children having such a lot of fun with their families. It’s an opportunity for a really important memory-maker! I still remember watching fireworks as a small child, huddling up with my grandmother and can still imagine her “Oohs” and “Aahhs” of excitement as the sky lit up with colour. Do make sure that your child/children are supervised while at the event – it’s easy to get lost in the dark! Talk to them about what to do if they can’t find you. I will be standing at the gate at the top of the steps up from the car park, so that makes a good rendezvous.

I had the privilege this week of taking part in a headteacher’s away-day led by the Bishop of Dorking who reflected on the importance of teachers finding wisdom to sustain us in our roles in school. She challenged us all to look both outwards to the school communities in which we work, as well as upwards to God, to find vision and strength. Events when the whole school community gathers together, like we will on Firework Night, inspire me and give me great encouragement. I’m reminded of the African proverb that it takes a whole village to raise a child.

I do hope you’ve all received information about our parent consultations which begin next week at the infants, and the week after at the juniors. They always provide an opportunity for us to share with you the educational journey that your children are on. Do let us know at the meetings any information that might help us better to support them, both academically and in their wider development. Please do ask questions if there’s anything you’re not sure about, and let us know if we can help with ideas about supporting learning at home. Contact either office if you haven’t received the letter.

Hope to see you up on the field this evening!

With best wishes
Clare
