HTPD 25/11/16

25 November 2016

Dear Parents,

What a super week it’s been! Thank you for supporting our Road Safety Week – I’ve been so encouraged by the number of families who have been practising the safety tips on the way in and out of school. Talking to the children, it’s been great to hear them explain what they’ve learnt and their posters were great. I do hope the impact of this week is felt long after it’s over, and that the children keep safe when out and about on the roads. Please do help them with this by driving really carefully on Addison Road, Pewley Way and Semaphore Road particularly. Thank you!

Year 3 proudly presented their musical “Splash” earlier this week. It was such a colourful, cheerful production with superb singing and acting on show. When year groups work together on a project like this, it’s fantastic to see how much confidence and enthusiasm is generated.

At the production, we launched our Advent charity, Toilet Twinning www.toilettwinning.org. This year instead of filling shoeboxes to send overseas, we are raising money for something different. Year 3 parents got the collection off to a great start with more than £270 being raised! We will be fundraising to link as many of our toilets as we can to provide toilets for children in the developing world. Every £60 enables the charity to build a toilet overseas in a place where it is really needed. For £240 a whole toilet block can be built! At both the infants and the juniors, there are more than 40 toilets – I wonder how many of them we will be able to twin? For every successful twinning, we receive a framed photo of the toilet that we’ve funded, to remind us all of the impact of our generosity every time we visit the loo! I think it will also be a really good reminder to the children of how lucky they are to have clean school toilets and hopefully it will help keep them well looked after too! As the funds come in we will let the children know how many toilet twinnings we have funded. If you are able to support this great cause, please send the money in to school in a labelled envelope. Thank you!

I also want to let you know that after working at HTPD for over ten years, Sian Stanley who currently teaches in Year 3, will be leaving at Christmas to move to London. We are looking forward to welcoming Sue Miller who will be joining us in 3S. I’m sure many of you will want to wish Sian well, so please do pop in and perhaps make a contribution to her leaving gift. She has influenced so many children’s lives and her kindness, creativity and sparkle will be missed.

With best wishes, Clare

18 November 2016

Dear Parents,

Next week we will be taking part in National Road Safety Week. Alongside the usual curriculum, we will be teaching the children some very important lessons about road safety. They will all learn and try out the Green Cross Code, as well as consider how best to keep themselves safe as they arrive and leave school. One of our biggest concerns is the number of children who get out of vehicles roadside. They are sometimes spotted opening car doors as traffic passes by. Please would you support us in this key message and make sure children get out directly onto the pavement.

To make the week even more memorable, on Friday the children can wear Mufti with something really bright. It’s another useful lesson to make sure on dark evenings we make sure drivers can see pedestrians. If you would like to make a donation to the road safety charity Brake, that would be great. They have donated some prizes to us and we will be awarding these to the children for the most eye catching posters at the end of the week. At the juniors on that day we will also be collecting donations for the fast approaching Christmas Fair (Friday 2nd December).

I would like to take this opportunity to invite all of our Year 2 parents along to a meeting in the Chapel at 7pm on Tuesday 22nd where they can meet all of the junior staff. It’s amazing to think that we’re already at that point in the year when we start to plan for our new intake next September! Please do come along and meet the team.

Thank you for taking the time to meet with your child’s teacher over the last two weeks, and please do keep in touch so that we can support your child’s learning. If, for any reason, you missed out on a parent consultation, please do get in touch and we can make other arrangements.

With best wishes,  Clare

11 November 2016

Dear Parents,

This week our assembly hero has been Martin Luther King. We told the children his story and explained how he dreamed of a world where no one experienced prejudice or injustice. We have reflected on our school value of “everyone knowing they are treasured and loved as a unique child of God”, and increased our efforts to treat each other respectfully and with kindness. The children are hopeful that together we can make our school a beacon of light.

I do hope that your meeting with your child’s class teacher (either for the juniors in the past week, or for the infants in the week to come), as well as giving an update on their academic progress, gives you a summary of their developing character. I so often find myself speaking with the children about our motto, “Learn to Live” and am always encouraged to hear them reflect on what it means. They often describe times when they have seen children in school showing respect for others, acting with kindness and compassion, understanding one another and learning from each other.

Today, as we marked Remembrance Day at 11am, pausing for a minute’s silence and praying for God’s peace in the world, I felt proud to be part of such a school where our values are lived out each day and where respect for all is key.

With best wishes
Clare

HTPD 4/11/16

04 November 2016

Dear Parents,

I attended a seminar this week on time management run by Guildford Diocese and, amongst other things, I was reminded of the value of marking the changing times and seasons in the school calendar. We spoke about the importance of key events in the school year and for me, Bonfire Night is a highlight. It reminds me of how valuable our partnership with families can be as we all enjoy an evening together. So I do hope you’re getting wrapped up warm and putting on the welly boots as you read this newsletter. I’ll see you up on the field.

Another key moment is marking Remembrance Day which we will do together next Friday in assembly at both sites. Poppies are for sale at both school offices and in fact, Year 6 will be going around the junior school classrooms next week so please send children in with donations if you would like them to support this good cause.

Our school value of “Seeing Heaven in the Moment” encourages us all to slow time down and take notice. One way that the children do this is when learning is brought to life with real experiences. This week Year 4 enjoyed meeting John Eagle, a historian whose knowledge about the Romans is legendary! They donned armour and became Roman centurions forming the “tortoise”. Meanwhile Year 2 lit the “Great Fire of Pewley” and watched the flames destroy their model houses and Year 6 wrote genuine letters to real companies enquiring about their eco-ethics. We hope that these memories will stay with the children for a long time.

Our HTPD hero this week was Mother Teresa and she reminds us all about the value in doing what’s right. She knew that her vocation was to care for those that had no one to care for them. She was willing to sacrifice so much. We reflected on the idea of your soul shining out as we each do what God would have us do in our lives. Again we reminded each other to ask “Is it sensible, is it kind?” – asking these two questions is helping to keep the school a happy place to be!

With best wishes
Clare
