• HT Christmas Fair Donations Day - Friday 24 Nov - Mufti for HT

HTPD 26/5/17

26 May 2017

Dear Parents,

Everywhere around school this week, I’ve been reminded by the children about all that is beautiful and good in the world. Sometimes in very sharp contrast to the sadness and suffering, especially in the light of the tragic news from Manchester, the children have brought smiles and laughter – “seeing heaven in the moment”. As our assembly series has reminded us, God provides green pastures and still water for us to lie down and rest, even if we walk through the dark valleys. Take a read of Psalm 23 if you’re in need of encouragement and hope. This week’s chapter of Pilgrim’s Progress told the story of Christian climbing a difficult, narrow path up a mountain. In the story, the Lord of the hill provides a beautiful green arbour for him to rest – and despite the challenge ahead, he has a restful, deep sleep.

I really enjoyed the Year 1 garden party as they proudly told me and their many visitors about all their hard work this term. So much progress and eager enthusiastic learners! Fluffy Friday too always brings plenty of joy to the school community. Thank you again for your support in holding these special days – the £1 donation ensures the children can choose from so many excellent activities.

We are very proud of our girls’ junior athletics team this week – they took part in a competitive event against some of the best teams in the district and came 4th overall. We congratulate all the athletes, but special mention goes to Tobi (Y6), Poppy (Y4) and Emily (Y3) for their record breaking wins! We are keen to make sure of our future success in sport by planning for the renovation of our all-weather pitch. If anyone has expertise in this sort of project management, or has suggestions for fundraising on a large scale, please do get in touch with me.

We’re looking forward to our Y6 Spanish travellers returning late this evening. They’ve had a really successful visit to our partner school in Aguilar. Take a look at the Twitter photos for a glimpse into their time away.

Thank you for your partnership in the school community – I’m encouraged by the feedback from the parent survey and will publish a summary of the results after half term, as well as telling you about some of the ways we’ll be acting on your ideas for what’s next! I hope you all have a lovely bank holiday weekend and restful half term break!

With best wishes
Clare

Healthy Week, Monday 5 - Friday 9 June
The first week after half term will be our Healthy Week when we have sporty experts coming in to run exciting workshops with the children, and they will be learning about every aspect of keeping healthy – from learning to relax and sleep well to eating well and exercising enough too.

Please can your child wear their school PE kit (trainers, house t-shirt, shorts or joggers, jumper) every day. Many activities will take place outside even in light rain, so they also need to have a light raincoat in school. Please can they also bring in an empty food packet, with a barcode, of something they like to eat (nothing containing nuts) on the Monday as we will be looking at what is in the food we eat. On Friday, children may bring in a named bike (with helmet) or scooter as they will have a chance to ride it in the playground. We do have a few in school to share if your child does not have one. If they can come to school on their bike or scooter that day – even better!

Breakfast Club
A reminder to stay with your child until Breakfast Club opens at 8.00am and you can hand them over to staff in the hall. Please don’t leave them in the library before this as there is no supervision in this area.

HTPD 19/5/17

19 May 2017

Dear parents

As we approach the half term break, I’m able to tell you about some of the changes for September. We have a few staff moving on – Jo Marsden in Year 4 is leaving to pursue a career in leading special educational needs; Patrick Davies from Year 2 has been selected to train as a vicar and is excited to become a student again; and Maggie Burgess, one of our longest serving members of staff is taking a well-deserved break after teaching for over 20 years at HTPD. We’ll definitely want to celebrate all that they have given to the school nearer to the end of the summer term. They have all been fantastic and we’ll be sad to see them go!

Three new teachers will be joining us next term – Catherine Hawkins is moving into the area from Chichester, and Sarah Jackson and Georgie Furlonger, two of our current student teachers are moving into class teacher roles. Chloe Stent, our third student has been recruited by Earlswood School in Redhill. I will let you know the new teaching teams after the half term break.

Along with many of our children and families, I’m looking forward to the fun run this Sunday. It’s so encouraging to see how keen the children are to keep fit and healthy. I know that many of you, as well as several staff, also enjoy the weekly Park Run at Stoke Park which is a great initiative. Big congratulations go to Toby this week in Year 2 as he celebrates his fiftieth Park Run!

Thinking about being healthy, reminds me to ask you to help reinforce our healthy eating message at breaktimes. We ask that children only bring fruit or veg snacks – this will also keep our sites tidier with less litter produced from wrappers, cartons and crisp packets. Thank you for your support in this.

Finally, a big thank you to all those who have already completed our annual survey. If you haven’t yet done so, the opportunity is still there until next Friday. Every response is useful for giving a complete picture of how we are doing, so please do take the time to fill it in if you can. I’ve resent the link as a parent mail – just ignore it if you’ve already replied. Many thanks for all your feedback.

With best wishes
Clare

12 May 2017

Dear Parents,

It’s been fantastic to see children really “learning to live” this week. Our Year 5 children are enjoying a residential visit to Brenscombe Farm outdoor activity centre near to Corfe Castle in Dorset. I popped down on Wednesday and chatted to them about what they’d been finding out about themselves as they tackled the abseiling off Dancing Ledge on the Jurassic Coast, or braved the high ropes adventure trail. So many of them talked about how their friends’ encouragement to keep going had proved invaluable, or how they’d felt God’s reassurance and help when they needed it most.

Meanwhile, Year 6 were working hard in their SATS tests. They really impressed us all with their resilience, determination and effort. They definitely deserved their swimming trip to the Lido today! Like Year 5, they have also supported each other and worked together to be the very best they can be. Friends are so important when you face a challenge.

As well as that, the sandcastle building at Pewley has been a tremendous team effort. I’m not sure how many sandcastles were built in total, but again the children’s determination to make a difference was great! Thank you so much for your generous support in raising funds for the playground project. We’re looking forward to Sunday’s Ground Force day at the infant site when we’ll start to get ready to build the sandpit; hope to see you there.

With best wishes
Clare

We plan to do this by creating different play zones and more social spaces. As part of the project, the children have been building sandcastles this week to raise funds for the new sandpit.

On Sunday there will be a skip on site for all the rubbish, but it would be very helpful if you could bring some tools, such as: bush cutting equipment, secateurs, cordless drills, hammers, screwdrivers, wheelbarrows, general gardening tools, gardening gloves etc.

Fluffy Friday, 26 May
Fluffy Friday choice forms should be returned by Monday 15 May. Please also bring in £1 (either with the form or on the day) to help cover the cost of materials.

Run to Sochi
Following our successful Run to Rio last year we are now running to Sochi (venue for the last Winter Olympics) and back, a distance of 1930 miles. Classes spend some time each week running laps of the field; so far we have collectively run: Week 1 – 167 miles, Week 2 – 441 miles, Week 3 – 499 miles. We will keep you updated on progress.

Data collection sheets, Years 1 & R
Children in Years 1 and R should have brought home a data collection sheet this week. Please check the information (particularly the contact details), make any changes, sign and return to the school office by 19 May.

French Club
The last French class for Years 1 and 2 will be on Wednesday 12 July (to make up for the missed class this week). Year R French Club will finish on 5 July.

HTPD 5/5/17

05 May 2017

Dear Parents,

We had such a good time across both sites this week with our “Stay and Play” events. We enjoyed talking to you about how we want to improve playtimes and I hope that your children have been inspired by some of the new ideas. Watching even our oldest Year 6 children play with some recycled cardboard boxes, I’ve been struck again about the importance of childhood. Using imagination, learning to collaborate, taking safe risks, it’s amazing what fun a cardboard box can bring. With Year 6 taking their SATS next week, it’s good to provide opportunities like this to help them stay relaxed! We’re very proud of all the children as they tackle the challenge ahead and hope that they actually enjoy it!

You should receive a parentmail today with a link to this year’s parent survey. If you have more than one child in school, please feel free to complete it more than once. We’re so keen to provide an opportunity for you to share any concerns you have, and it also helps to identify ways that we can improve. The survey is completely anonymous, but please do get in touch if it raises any issues for you that you would rather discuss face to face. We do value our parent partnership and love to receive feedback from you.
We have also carried out a similar survey with the children and we look forward to hearing what they have to say.

Next week brings us to the start of our school journeys, with Year 5 travelling to Brenscombe Farm in Dorset for a 4 day residential visit. This trip has been such a highlight for so many generations of children. My own son looks back fondly on overcoming the challenge of abseiling down Dancing Ledge.

Let’s hope the sun shines on this year’s intrepid explorers!

With best wishes
Clare

Surrey County Council Foster Care Fortnight 8-21 May 2017:
The number of children in care in Surrey has increased slightly recently, and hovers around 900 children. About 40% are placed outside Surrey because we haven’t got enough foster carers. We are looking for foster carers for children of all ages (birth to 18), for supported lodgings carers for young people aged 16-21, and Short Breaks carers for children with disabilities. Whether you are married or single, male or female, straight or gay, whatever your cultural heritage, do or don’t have your own children, rent or own your home, work or don’t work, we would love to hear from you. You do need to have a spare room, or if you want to become a Short Breaks carer, be able to make a room available when the child stays with you. For more information on local fostering events please see:
