HTPD 20/5/16

20 May 2016

Dear parents

It was really good to share our assessment story with an audience of parents on Tuesday evening. We emphasised how each child’s unique learning journey is guided along by the teaching methods we use at HTPD. We also outlined how we communicate to the children, how we help them to reflect on their learning themselves and how we report to you their current attainment and the next steps they need to take. Tom (who leads assessment across the school) helpfully likened assessment to car maintenance, with regular checks on the fuel gauge and tyre pressure being really important, just like our daily observations of children in the classroom. He then explained that the statutory external tests and annual assessments are more like an MOT – a useful safety check that all is going well, with important information about any repair work that might be necessary. He reminded us that it’s also vital to keep an eye on the destination, which at HTPD is to “Learn to Live”. Keep an eye out on our website for the presentation that Tom used if you weren’t able to join us.

Next week, a group of 18 children from Year 6 will be visiting our partner school in Aguilar, Spain together with Tom, Mary and Helen. This is a very exciting overseas trip and our international travellers always come back having learnt plenty about themselves and grown in confidence too in facing a challenge. Good luck to them all!

Tim Burgess, whom some of you might remember as a previous deputy head at HTPD, has been working with the children in Year 5 this week. He’s conducting some research as a University of Winchester lecturer into children learning outside the classroom. He’s observed the children taking part in a wide range of “adventure” activities out in our woodland area. They’ve been building shelters, lighting small fires and working cooperatively in teams. It’s been great to see all of the children really enthused about the experience, and it’s reminded me of the value in our wider curriculum. We’re also really enjoying having Tim around to lead our New Life Club at the juniors. It gives children another opportunity to reflect on our assembly themes – albeit in a slightly zanier context complete with phone calls from the Queen!

We’re looking forward to next week’s Fluffy Friday – another opportunity for children to learn in a wider context, as well as with new friends. We’re so grateful for your donation of £1 to ensure the sessions are really well resourced. There are a huge variety of different activities planned and we’re so grateful for any helpers. Do get in touch with your child’s teacher if you are able to offer the whole day, or just a short time. Extra adults really do make the day a success, and you’re sure to enjoy it too!

If you’re going to the May Time Party tomorrow night, I hope you have a great evening. Thank you for your generous support of the school and for the sense of community that this sort of occasion helps create.

With best wishes, Clare

Data Collection Year R and Year 1
Data Collection sheets have gone home in book bags for children in Years R and 1. Please check the contact details, make any amendments and return the sheet to the school office by next Friday 27 May.

Golden Boot Challenge
We are taking part in the Surrey County Council Golden Boot Challenge again this year. This is designed to encourage children to try greener ways of coming to school such as walking or scooting. Today is the ‘baseline day’ and children’s usual mode of travel has been recorded. We will then be asking the children how they come to school on Friday 10, 17, 24 June and 1 July. If you do drive to school, please consider parking further away and then walking; this counts as park and stride. The class with the highest ‘green scores’ will win the Golden Boot Trophy.

ACTION SUNDAY 22nd May 2 – 4pm
: This is our fourth Action Sunday and on previous occasions the response has been great from the School and Children, who appreciate all the hard work put in. The outside area isn’t really covered under the caretaker’s duties, so we can make a real difference.
Ideally we need a minimum of 30 parents in total to make an impact. This is only 5 people per class.
Please contact Jayne Woods,  jaynelwoods@googlemail.com to donate your time on Sunday and get involved in making the outside space something to be proud of. Could you please bring along brooms, dustpans & brushes, secateurs, green recycle bags/bin liners etc.

MOVIE SUNDAY 22nd May 2 – 4pm:
In conjunction with the Action Sunday we will be holding a Movie Sunday on the Big Screen in the hall. The film will be free, but to raise funds for school we will be selling popcorn and squash for £2 per child which can be purchased on the day. Please note that children must be supervised at all times by a parent/guardian.

SUMMER FAIR Sunday 12th June 1 – 3 pm
: Our Summer Fair will be on the 12th June from 1pm until 3pm. It is always a fun, family afternoon with games, music, food and lots more. Please put the date in your diaries. If any parents or local businesses would like a stall at the fair, or donate a prize to the raffle please contact Susanne, smw555@hotmail.com.
We are also looking for someone who can juggle or use a Diablo. We really hope to run a Circus Skills area at the Summer Fair and it would be great to have someone there demonstrating! Please contact Susanne or Jill if you can help.

Everyone who finishes will get a medal and a bottle of water. The first boy and first girl home in each race also get a trophy. The event is open to children from all years, there will be both an infant (1K) and a junior (2K) run with a fully marshalled course and water stations.
