Junior 22/5/15

22 May 2015

Dear Parents

In a couple of year’s time we will be asked to decide whether or not we stay in the European Union. Whatever we decide will have a great effect on all of us. Do we perceive ourselves as partners with the countries of continental Europe or an isolated island making a broad range of alliances across the world? There will be much discussion I am sure.

This week we have seen European partnership in action with our twelve brave student ambassadors along with Helen, Mary and myself visiting our friends and colleagues at the Colegio San Gregorio in Aguila de Campoo. The small town of nine thousand is exactly one hundred miles south of Santander. The children did an amazing job of courage, independence and friendship – all of which are key values we espouse. All except for two were saying on their own with a Spanish family and judging by presents, hugs and tears at the farewells this morning, all the children formed good relationships with their hosts. The Spanish teachers and parents are so warm and welcoming and the school is similar to HTPD in terms of friendly, family approach with everyone using first names. It is also a Christian school. The lessons are rather more relaxed and less pacey than at HTPD but children still achieve good success at the 3-18 years school.

Do have a look at our website to see what happened and the success of this particular part of European partnership. A big highlight for the children was sharing reading books with the infants. “Do you like custard on your cornflakes?” was a huge hit!

Gillian Rodgers and Rachel Downey have both decided to leave the school at the end of this school year and Mary Booth is dropping to part time. There will be an opportunity to thank them properly later in the term. However, I did not want this moment to pass without saying what a great contribution they have made. Gillian has been tireless in her enthusiasm to help children enjoy and excel in games and Rachel has given many years of children a good start in French. Heather Havermans has announced the thrilling news that she is expecting a baby in November. She will probably be with us for September and then be on maternity leave for the rest of the year.

Clare and Debbie, along with the governors, have made some new appointments this year. Helen Campbell, who is a parent at HT and has worked and supplied for us, is coming as a part time teacher as is Frances Clixby. Frances is a parent at PD and worked at the school till 2008. Joining them is Sarah Mistry who will be a newly qualified teacher. I’m sure these are going to be great teachers and we all wish them well.

We hope you all have a great half term.
With best wishes, Richard

HT @ Home - extended

Thank you so much for all your enthusiasm for HT @ Home already! Many of us socialise with people we've met via this school, with the friends we make in the class room and at the school gate. In recognition of this, HTSC are encouraging us to arrange lots of socials (which we do anyway). The difference is that, under the HT @ Home umbrella, we can now turn these into mini HT fundraisers by asking guests to make a donation to school via the new online page.

Some lovely events are bubbling away in support of our efforts to raise £5,000 for an overhaul of student computers at HT. To reach our target, it would be wonderful to see more HT@Home events in the coming weeks and months. Please think about how you might be able to raise a little cash for this important venture - could you host a Pimms evening for your HT friends, or a dinner party, or a girl's pamper night? If you have any queries, or simply wish to chat through an idea, please contact nataliesavage@me.com.

Please keep checking our designated online fundraising page to see how our fundraising efforts are going against target. Our children might be interested to see the page too, for every penny raised will go to improving computers at school mydonate.bt.com/events/htathome/208773
