HTPD 29/3/18

29 March 2018

Dear parents and carers

With my ears still ringing with the wonderful sound of singing from our Easter celebration at Holy Trinity Church this morning, I am so thankful for another great term! Thank you for your support in helping to ensure our school provides a wonderful community in which your children are learning to live. To see children from all seven year groups, as well as all of our teaching staff coming together and enjoying a happy Easter service really did make a fantastic end to the term. I hope the rain didn’t dampen your child’s enjoyment of the morning! They all seemed to remain cheerful despite the downpour.

Similarly Year 6 took the weather in their stride as they walked through the park at Wintershall estate in Bramley on Pause Day, imagining Jesus’ walk through Jerusalem carrying his cross. Their empathy and quiet respect was excellent. Back in school there were plenty of creative opportunities through which the Easter story was told. We were so grateful to both St Saviours, Christchurch and Emmaus Rd churches for helping us to pray, ponder and understand more about the events of Holy Week. Making the Easter gardens was a really joyful occasion too!

As the holidays begin, I wish you all a restful break and a very Happy Easter! Looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday 16th April for the start of the summer term!

With best wishes
Clare

HTPD 23/3/18

23 March 2018

Dear Parents and Carers

We’ve just this week completed our assembly series for the term. As you know, week by week we’ve considered each of the fruits of the Spirit and as we move towards Easter, we’ll be thinking about how Jesus lived out these same qualities. This theme also helps us to reflect on the events of the Easter story with Jesus treating people with kindness as he approached the cross, being patient and full of peace in the face of suffering and ultimately rising again from the dead showing that love conquers all.

We’ve hosted another three teachers this week from a school in Madrid. They visited lots of the classes and explained how Easter is celebrated in Spain. It was interesting for the children to realise that Christianity is a worldwide faith and is the same, but different around the world. I hope their visit helped us to “imagine the journey in another’s footsteps”.

Next Tuesday all the children will be taking part in our Easter pause day. This day gives each of us the opportunity to take time to slow down, to pray for each other and the wider world, and to see “heaven in the moment”. Then on Wednesday 28th the whole school will be celebrating Easter together at Holy Trinity Church. We would appreciate parent helpers to walk to and from the service which starts at 9.30am. We will be leaving from both sites just after 9am. I’m afraid there won’t be much room in church for visitors – just standing room at the back. It’s the one occasion in the year when all seven year groups are together and every seat is filled!

I’d like to congratulate the choir and orchestra for their exceptional performance at this year’s primary school music festival at GLive on Wednesday evening. It’s so good to come together with the other Guildford schools to showcase such wonderful musical talent and it reminded me again of the importance of the creative arts. Thank you to all our musical children for practising, persevering and showing such joy in making music! Do encourage your child to consider playing an instrument or taking part in school singing opportunities.

Congratulations too to our cross country team for their stunning results in the final event of the year, running on the Downs. Again it was brilliant to see so many local primary and junior schools enjoying an opportunity to meet together and to compete. My thanks go to the whole staff team for ensuring these extracurricular events happen!

With best wishes
Clare

HTPD 16/3/18

16 March 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

Last weekend, some of our staff and governors, as well as parents, took part in the Surrey half marathon. The children were so impressed, and so was I, to hear about Helen, Lucy, Rebecca and Robert Cotton’s achievements. Their determination, fitness and healthy lifestyle shows the children a great example and it’s wonderful that so many of our children are following in their footsteps with great results in the recent Surrey cross country run, closely contested hockey matches and countless other fixtures this term. A remarkable 50% of the children have now taken part this year in sporting events against other schools.

It’s no surprise therefore that the children are eagerly anticipating next week’s sports relief fundraiser events. At the infants, the children are being sponsored in a big step-a-thon taking place during PE lessons. Similarly at the juniors, PE days are going to be even more active than usual. All of us are taking part in the nation’s billion steps challenge. Then on Friday 23rd, the children can come to school wearing sports kit, bringing with them a donation of at least £1 for Sports Relief (www.sportrelief.com) which is raising funds for all sorts of wellbeing and mental health support as well as providing sporting opportunities across the world.

It was lovely to see the children in Year 2 visiting the juniors on Thursday. They were thrilled to be able to read their stories to an attentive audience of children from Year 4, as well as to enjoy hearing the Year 4’s recite some poetry. Next week, Year 3 will be calling in at the infants – it’s great to be able to build bridges across the school.

Thank you so much to those of you who read my suggestions last week about being punctual at the start of the day. It has been much better at both sites this week. Hopefully we can keep it up for the rest of the term – there is still so much of the curriculum to cover before Easter and every minute is precious.
Thank you too for a superb array of Greek outfits on show today in Year 3. The children are loving having the opportunity to bring their term’s topic to life thanks to a visit from the Yvonne Arnaud theatre company and the costumes are making it all the more realistic!

Have a great weekend.
With best wishes
Clare

One of our ex-pupils, Sasha Cook, sadly lost her elder brother Ben, also an ex-pupil, last year. Sasha wanted to raise funds to buy a bench in Ben’s memory so has started her own project creating slime! You may have heard her interview with Eagle Radio this week. For more information, Sasha’s website address is: https://cottoncandyslimes.co.uk.

Sasha will be holding a pop-up shop in Shere on the 17th and 18th March from 10.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. Please visit her or maybe make an order via her website?

If you would like to know more, there is also a memorial page for Ben on Facebook which tells the story of what Sasha is doing: https://www.facebook.com/memoriesBencook140517/.

09 March 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

Our Spanish visitors have had a super week, working in school with their Year 6 hosts, visiting other classes and exploring Guildford. They also had an exciting day out in London. Thank you to all the host families for looking after them so well. They’ve had a brilliant visit and we’ll look forward to taking a group of own Yr 6 children to Aguilar in Spain next term.

I spoke to the children at the juniors on Monday about how happy I was to see them working away at 8.40am. Most children started bang on time this week, having already hung up coats, and found their way to their seats; every minute of their school day was used well. Please do make every effort to deliver children on time – a few minutes late in the morning does make such a difference and adds up to several hours or even days over the course of a year. Arriving late also means that children are flustered and not as ready to make a good start to the day. Thank you for your support in this.

On Wednesday I spent a happy time in 4R hearing their delightful kennings (a poem made up of a string of figurative expressions). It reminded me of one that JJ had written on a staff training day a couple of years ago so I read it to them and thought I’d include it here along with some of the best of theirs. JJ’s kenning really does encapsulate so much of what HTPD hopes to provide:

HTPD by JJ
Happiness producer,
Opportunity generator,
Life teacher,
Curiosity stimulator,
Confidence builder,
Friendship giver,
Love provider.

Hamster by Abby
Loud-squeaker,
Food-muncher,
Cute-beggar,
Quiet-sleeper,
Hay-eater,
Carrot-nibbler,
Harmless-biter.

Dogs by Robin
Cat-chaser,
Face-licker,
Tail-wagger,
Shoe-eater,
Ear-flapper,
Food-stealer,
Sock-sniffer.

Snow by Julian
Cold-bringer,
Water-freezer,
Ground-coverer,
School-closer!

With all the parent consultations now completed, I hope you’ve enjoyed having a good read of your own child’s work. Their creativity and determination to learn is so impressive! Do get in touch if you didn’t manage to speak with your child’s teacher; we can arrange another opportunity. It’s such an important part of our working together.

Have a good weekend.
With best wishes
Clare

02 March 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

So this is rather strange, to be sat at home writing the newsletter and the school is closed! Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused today and thank you for your ongoing support. It’s been so difficult this week to make a good decision – yesterday we stayed open, despite many of the other Guildford schools closing, and had a super day in school. One of my highlights was being pulled around the pitch on a toboggan by a team of Year 4 boys! Later in the afternoon, Year 6 were mesmerised by surgeon Ian Jourdan’s expert dissection skills, as he showed them how our heart pumps blood around the body. Meanwhile, the children in Reception marvelled at the loveliness of our very own newly-hatched chicks. I’m so glad we didn’t miss that because of the weather. It’ll be exciting on Monday to see how much they’ve grown.

It was also great to be able to go ahead as planned with our parent consultations at Pewley. These discussions with you about your children’s learning are so vital and, with a lot of preparation beforehand, the teachers were delighted to be able to keep to the schedule. But then, last night the weather worsened. The roads around the school became impassable and several of us decided to walk home! It was then that I decided to close the school today following warnings from the Met Office and Surrey education authority. In fact this morning, it doesn’t seem too bad. I do hope though that you’ve managed to make arrangements for looking after the children.

Snow days come around so rarely and they are often an amazing memory maker. I hope you all managed to enjoy an unexpected break from the routine with some fun outside in the snow, or perhaps inside in the warm with books, board games and indoor play. I’m looking forward to hearing from the children what they did with the day.

Next week it’s the turn of our junior school parent consultations. Do get in touch if you haven’t yet arranged an appointment. At this halfway point through this academic year, it’s such a good chance to build on our home-school partnership. And let’s hope for the arrival of Spring! See you all on Monday!

With best wishes
Clare
