HTPD 10/3/17

10 March 2017

Dear Parents,

This week we had two apparently contrasting themes to explore in assembly: one was from the “Love is…” series and reminded us all about not being irritable – it was very helpful to think of ways to stay calm, not be stressed, not “stress the small stuff” and relax. In our busy world, it was a perfect antidote for both children and staff.

The other theme though, came from the story of Jesus in the temple becoming angry when he turned over the moneylenders’ tables - he saw the injustice of their behaviour and how it was making the lives of everyday people miserable. It made me ponder what Jesus would be angry about today. I’m sure he would continue to stand up for the poor, the marginalised and those without power. He would definitely want to protect children. I wonder what he would do about the misuse of the internet.

We are increasingly concerned about the impact of online technology on our children’s lives, particularly for our older year groups, but I do think we all need to stay informed.

We have had recent experience of Y6 children, when playing at home, being approached online by strangers in threatening ways. This is really frightening; please do make sure you closely supervise your children when they are using the internet. One app that appears so innocent and yet has recently been seen to be being misused by criminals is musical.ly. This app is one on which you can record yourself singing along and dancing to music and then share with friends online. There have been two serious incidents involving children in Surrey schools where a stranger has contacted them and begun grooming them via this App. Please be extremely vigilant. Another concern is the use of chatrooms within seemingly innocuous games like Minecraft. Please do take care and talk to your children about how to keep themselves safe.

I would also like to remind you of our school policy regarding mobile phones. No children should bring mobile phones into school. If you feel your child’s situation needs to be an exception to this, please would you email your child’s class teacher explaining the reason. They can then make appropriate arrangements to safeguard your child during the school day by looking after their phone during school hours. I hope you can all understand why this is so important. Thank you.

With best wishes
Clare

Year 2 are doing a sponsored swimathon in their usual swimming lesson on Wednesday 22 March.
FOPS will be running a cake stall after school with all proceeds to Red Nose Day.
Red noses will be available to buy from the school office from next Monday 13 March (£1 each with at least 60p going to Red Nose Day).

Bake n’ Stroll – Sunday 23rd April:   It’s Spring and the sun is shining at last, which means it’s time for Bake n’ Stroll! Come and join us for a fun, family treasure hunt on Pewley Down and yummy tea and cake back at school. Once again we will also be holding our very own Pewley Bake Off! This year we are looking for Mum Masterpiece’s, Dad’s Delicacies and Children’s Cakes and Cookies. There will be prizes for the winning adult entries plus 1st, 2nd and 3rd places for Children up to Yr 2 and a separate category for Yr 3 and above. Entry forms will be coming home very soon and every returned form will be entered into a Lucky Draw to win a gorgeous Spring Hamper – generously sponsored by Cavenders. Put the date in your diary - we look forward to seeing you there!

Calling all runners!   If you would like to meet up for a social run then please join us (some friendly year R Mums) on Thursday mornings in the playground straight after drop-off. We usually run for around 30-45 mins around Pewley Down and the Chantries. All fitness levels welcome.

Check out the FOPS webpage and find out more about upcoming events and exciting new plans for improving the rear outside areas at Pewley. The minutes from our last FOPS meeting are now also available www.htpd.surrey.sch.uk/The-School/Parents/PTA/Infant---FOPs.aspx

HTPD Annual Fun Run – Sunday 21 May 2017 – Shalford Park:   The HTPD Fun Run is back. This year it will take place at Shalford Park. Organisation of a bigger and better event is well under way and this year we are looking forward to the launch of the parents and teachers 5k run. Dust off those trainers and please put the date in the diary for what we hope will be another fantastic family event.

HELP NEEDED - HTPD Summer Party – Sat 17th June 7-12pm:   Plans for the joint Summer Party at Weybourne House are now well under way! Once again it will be a relaxed, fun filled evening with good food, dancing and a well-stocked bar at this local riverside location. For extra fun and funds we will, again, be holding a SILENT AUCTION but we need a team of people and prizes to make it happen. Would YOU be willing to source and co-ordinate prizes?? Or do YOU or your company have a suitable prize to offer? – these could be event tickets or passes to a ‘behind the scenes’ experience,  a weekend away, a case of bubbly or similar. Have an idea? Please contact Jill, Nicci or Sue.

Cake Sales – are back!   Our ever-popular Cake Sales are now in full swing and this is where yummy goodies can be purchased in the front playground at Friday at 3pm pick up. Each class has been given a date - see list below - where parents are asked to donate NUT FREE cakes or cookies (homemade or bought) to sell. Please check the ingredients list on the back of any packets to ensure products are truly NUT FREE as we do have a few children in school that depend on this. Goodies can be left at the front desk at morning drop off and a small team of volunteers are needed to set up and run the stall in the afternoon. Together these sales raise significant funds and help buy School invaluable extra resources - please support them!

10th March – Oak;   17th March – Hazel;   24th March – Willow (Red Nose Day)

Second hand Uniform Sales – Fri 10th March and Friday 24th March in the front playground at 3pm.
