HTPD 31/3/17

31 March 2017

Dear parents

Red Nose Day really was a huge success across both schools with over £2000 being raised from a combination of Year 2 sponsored swimming, cake sales, Year 6 stalls, raffles, and talent shows. It was so lovely to see how keen the children were to put this term’s theme of love into action. They were all keen to remember how lucky they are and wanted to make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate. Our school value “Imagining the journey in another’s footsteps” together with the national fundraising initiative inspired all of us to be generous. Thank you so much for your support!

This week has proved to be a fantastic end to the term; the children’s reflections, prayers and responses to our Pause Day, as well as their participation in our Easter service at Holy Trinity Church, emphasised the importance of slowing down enough to notice - and to be thankful. For some children working together with others to create beautiful Easter gardens also gave them the opportunity to ponder on the Easter story.

The summer term begins for all of us on Tuesday April 18th; until then I hope you all have a super holiday. I’ll be having fun with my parents at their Golden Wedding Anniversary, continuing the theme of Love is… as we get together as a family to celebrate. Looking forward to seeing all the children again after Easter – we have plenty of exciting things happening next term for them to enjoy!

With best wishes
Clare

24 March 2017

Dear parents

I had the pleasure of accompanying Year 6 to Wintershall this week. This is an estate just outside Bramley where the owners have used sculptures to depict the journey of Jesus to the cross. It was a beautiful spring morning, and the beautiful grounds, the glorious daffodils and the bright, blue skies provided a stunning contrast to the sadness of our reflections. The children were very thoughtful and considered Jesus’ sacrifice and silent humility with deep respect. They also experienced “heaven in the moment” as their mood changed to the hope of the resurrection as they ran across the grassy field at the top of the hill. “Christ is risen!” really did seem to bring light and joy to their mood. Light in the darkness has been our prayer this week and this seems particularly apt given the recent events in our capital city.

To continue with this Easter theme, next Monday will be our annual “Pause Day”. All the year group teams have planned age-appropriate, creative activities to help all of the children take some time to stop and think. With themes such as forgiveness, love, serving others and celebration, it is sure to be a great day. We are also grateful to Guildford Baptist Church, Emmaus Road Church and Christ Church for helping at both sites and imaginatively bringing the Easter story to life.

Next Tuesday the whole school will gather at Holy Trinity Church to celebrate Easter, as well as to mark the end of term. We would appreciate helpers to walk the children to the church and back – and there may be some standing room for parents during the service, although all seven year groups together is a tight squeeze. We will be leaving from both sites just after 9am.

Thank you to everyone for their generosity in supporting this year’s Red Nose Day! We’ve had a fun day of silly costumes, plenty of red noses…as well as the outpouring of talent in our talent shows at both sites, in classes, year groups and in front of the whole school. What talented children!

With best wishes
Clare

Amazing Art Club
Come along and have fun learning a mixture of drawing skills (using pen, pencil and charcoal), painting techniques and how to construct in 3-d/sculpture and kinetic narrative art using  paper engineering/ making books whilst looking at artists and applied artists for inspiration. Key to the sessions is that your child develops their own voice, sustains focus, finds solutions, explores ideas and ways of working that they find interesting whilst learning new skills and a context for their work. It is stealth learning!

Sessions are run by artist Sophie Artemis Pitt www.sophieartemispitt.com. See website for gallery of children's work from Watts Gallery, Painshill, Lightbox Museum and now Holy Trinity! Sophie has 2 sons and loves making artist's books and painting (work collected by the Tate Gallery and the V&A Museum) in her studio in Guildford. This popular club has been running since 2013. Maximum 12 spaces so book early: THURSDAY 20 April - 6th July (no class half term 1st June). The cost for the 11 sessions (all materials included as always) remains at £154 (£14 per session). Christine Slater, who taught here at HTPD for about 15 years, has been very busy and is now tutoring Maths, mainly years 3 to 6 but has also tutored Years 2 and 7.  Please get in touch if you would like to discuss your child's needs. Christine is extremely flexible about what she teaches, eg. a special focus on certain areas of the curriculum, or perhaps combining Maths and English in one session.

Amongst her other talents, Christine also enjoys making curtains, (also adjusting/repairing), cushions and other soft furnishing projects.

Christine’s current 'thing' is box-framing pairs of small shoes.  It's a lovely way of remembering those toddler days, both for parents and grandparents, and is more than happy to send you a couple of photographs to show some examples.  For further information on any of the above, please email christineslater@btinternet.co.uk or phone on 07815 200959.  Thank you!

17 March 2017

Dear Parents,

As I write this week’s news, I have just watched on iPlayer the recent Panorama programme on sleep deprivation. Do watch it if you haven’t yet had a chance. It makes really interesting viewing and confirms what many of us already know: a good night’s sleep is so vital. We know that children benefit from regular bedtime routines and are more likely to make great progress in lessons when they’re well rested. Some of the top tips from the programme include making sure that children start to wind down at the end of the day (bedtime stories definitely help here!), that they have a screen-free time just before bed and that they go to bed at the same time every night. Well done to those of you that already make this a regular part of every evening – it’s good to know how positive an impact that has! If you find it tricky to help children settle for sleep each night, you might like to read the advice on the NHS Choices website:
www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Childrenssleep/Pages/bedtimeritual.aspx

All the musicians at the junior school definitely had a late night this week with the excitement of the annual primary schools music festival. The concert at GLive this year was superb – with children from 12 local schools taking part in the choir and orchestra. It was wonderful to see how much enjoyment was gained from making music together, performing to a full house, and after working hard learning words and practising notes, producing such a top class evening’s entertainment. Thank you to all the performers and their supporters!

Next Friday is of course Red Nose Day! Please remember that children can come to school wearing their red noses, something red…or something silly. Any donations towards Comic Relief would be welcome and we’re looking forward to the talent shows at both sites. Year 6 will be running fundraising stalls at morning break so the juniors could bring in money to spend, and there’s a cake sale at the infants too.

There are also important information evenings regarding our Y4, Y5 and Y6 residential school journeys taking place next week (see below for details) – do attend if at all possible so that you can help your children make the most of these wonderful opportunities.

I love the idea that sleep is one of the most powerful performance enhancers that there is. I might just get an early night!

With best wishes
Clare

HTPD 10/3/17

10 March 2017

Dear Parents,

This week we had two apparently contrasting themes to explore in assembly: one was from the “Love is…” series and reminded us all about not being irritable – it was very helpful to think of ways to stay calm, not be stressed, not “stress the small stuff” and relax. In our busy world, it was a perfect antidote for both children and staff.

The other theme though, came from the story of Jesus in the temple becoming angry when he turned over the moneylenders’ tables - he saw the injustice of their behaviour and how it was making the lives of everyday people miserable. It made me ponder what Jesus would be angry about today. I’m sure he would continue to stand up for the poor, the marginalised and those without power. He would definitely want to protect children. I wonder what he would do about the misuse of the internet.

We are increasingly concerned about the impact of online technology on our children’s lives, particularly for our older year groups, but I do think we all need to stay informed.

We have had recent experience of Y6 children, when playing at home, being approached online by strangers in threatening ways. This is really frightening; please do make sure you closely supervise your children when they are using the internet. One app that appears so innocent and yet has recently been seen to be being misused by criminals is musical.ly. This app is one on which you can record yourself singing along and dancing to music and then share with friends online. There have been two serious incidents involving children in Surrey schools where a stranger has contacted them and begun grooming them via this App. Please be extremely vigilant. Another concern is the use of chatrooms within seemingly innocuous games like Minecraft. Please do take care and talk to your children about how to keep themselves safe.

I would also like to remind you of our school policy regarding mobile phones. No children should bring mobile phones into school. If you feel your child’s situation needs to be an exception to this, please would you email your child’s class teacher explaining the reason. They can then make appropriate arrangements to safeguard your child during the school day by looking after their phone during school hours. I hope you can all understand why this is so important. Thank you.

With best wishes
Clare

HTPD 3/3/17

03 March 2017

Dear Parents,

I know that so many of the children enjoyed celebrating Pancake Day on Tuesday – I was fascinated to discover which were the most loved fillings; while lemon and sugar seems to remain a top favourite, there were certainly some very creative chefs in our school community, with families cooking up some wonderful pancake recipes! Their descriptions made my mouth water! I really enjoy our different festivals which mark out the passing of the seasons – I think children too find comfort in the familiar pattern which they love to remember from previous years. Whatever our particular family traditions, we all love to celebrate!

I was surprised that so many children didn’t know that Pancake Day ushers us into the period in the Christian calendar known as Lent. At the juniors we marked the start of the forty days of Lent with an assembly on Ash Wednesday where we reflected on what this season is for. I’m certain that it’s more than just choosing something to go without. One organisation which seems to help provide a deeper focus is “40 Acts” where each day throughout this season, Christians are encouraged to do something kind and make a difference. Some teachers are using this idea in their classes and if you’d like to join in at home, here’s a link to some ideas (
www.40acts.org.uk).

With our assembly theme this week being “Love is…not selfish”, it’s been encouraging to see how keen the children are to think of others before themselves. Keeping the school tidy, helping someone else find a lost sweatshirt, making sure we don’t distract others from learning, and offering to help whenever we can, are all making the school a more selfless place. Perhaps you could chat with your child about what they are doing to make a difference.

With best wishes
Clare

Surrey Youth Games
Registration is now open for the 2017 Specsavers Surrey Youth Games. The SYG is an annual event that takes place over 2 days at Surrey Sports Park, Guildford. Up to 2000 young people from 11 boroughs and districts across Surrey come together to compete, which, for some, is their first experience of competitive sport.

Local sports clubs in Guildford provide FREE training sessions during the lead up to the competition.
SYG is open to 7 - 16 year olds who live or go to school in Surrey.

This year, two Year 6 children who were involved in the Surrey Youth Games in 2016, have been chosen by Active Surrey as Young Ambassadors for the competition. Next week they will give a talk in Assembly about their experience and give more information about the different sports on offer.

They will also hand out leaflets so please look out for this coming home in your child's school bag. To register your child go to: www.activesurrey.com/SYG From this page you will be directed to your borough and then you will see the different sports on offer in your area.

The SYG is an amazing event and a brilliant way to try a new sport and get 6 weeks of training completely free. We encourage all the children to have a look and see if anything interests them. The Team Guildford poster displayed at Reception and on the Sports Notice Board has no fewer than 7 ex-Holy Trinity pupils from last year!
