HTPD 4/3/16

Dear Parents,

This week really has been HTPD at its best! The children have surpassed themselves across both sites with a “zest for learning”. Every day they have enjoyed one of four different themed activities all linked to a book about a journey. We’ve reflected on how much can be learnt by journeying together as we have watched children working in their house teams supporting each other to work hard, imagine, create and problem solve. Do take a look at the JTLYKs which summarise all that’s gone on – as well as our Twitter feed! Huge thanks are owed to Geraldine and Alison who masterminded the week, and to the whole staff team who planned and lead such fantastic learning opportunities.

Amidst all the excitement of Bookweek, we received a visit from the Environmental Health Inspector who awarded both kitchens a 5-star hygiene rating. It’s great to see that both Iris and Gill have been recognised as leading such high quality catering teams! Well done to all our super cooks.
We’ve also enjoyed hosting 19 children and two teachers from our Spanish partner school. They’ve become part of the school family this week and have joined in with assembly, all the book week activities, read to the children in Reception, as well as squeezing in a day trip to London and a walking tour of Guildford. Our Y6 host families deserve a special mention too, making sure that our visitors felt welcomed and cared for. Thank you!

So, I do hope your children have commented on how much they’ve enjoyed the week – it’s been a huge whole school event, and we’ll definitely be thinking about how to build on its’ success when we plan for next year!

Parent Consultations, Tuesday 8 & Wednesday 9 March
You should now have received your appointment time for the parent consultations next week. We would encourage you to keep to the 10 minute time slot, but please do ask if you feel you need a longer appointment on another occasion. Please come to the library/office area on arrival where there will be a list showing where the consultations are being held.

Teacher-led clubs
There will be no teacher-led clubs next week owing to the parent consultations.

Sport Relief, Friday 18 March
Look out for the Sport Relief letter and sponsorship form which has gone home in book bags this week. All the children will be participating in sporting activities on 18 March.
Sport Relief wristbands will be available to purchase from the school office from Monday 7 March at a cost of £1 each.

Year R
The school nurse will be visiting on Tuesday 8 March to do the height, weight and sight tests.

Ballet Club show
This term’s ballet show will be on Thursday 17 March (and not Thursday 10 March as some of you may have been told).

Lost
Stefan Lawson-Foia has lost his dark blue GAP fleece with a hood – the fleece is named.

13th March - Action Sunday in conjunction with Movie Sunday, 2-4pm
We are hoping to have a film afternoon at school between 2-4pm showing the film Paddington on the big screen in the hall. The film is free, but to raise funds for school we will be selling popcorn and squash for £2 per child.
 
Please book tickets (either in the playground or by email) with Ali Fairbanks (Sophie’s mum Walnut), Leanna Donkin (Poppy’s mum Willow) or Sally Rolton (Marcus and Zach’s mum Walnut and Hazel) by Wednesday 9 March, to give them an idea of the amount of popcorn / squash required.

Parents will need to supervise their child/children during the film. Please team up with other families and nominate someone to be responsible for your child to enable as many adults as possible to put on their gardening gloves and help with the clearing up of the school grounds in readiness for spring. We need about 30 parents, dads especially, as there are so many jobs to be done. Please contact Jayne Preston (Austin, Charlie and Oliver’s Mum) to confirm if you are able to help out.

Tournament will start prompt at 8.15 a.m. Please drop off and collect from Tormead.

Approximate timings – start at 9.45 a.m. and finish at 1.30 p.m. Please drop off and collect from The Priory.

QUIZ & CURRY NIGHT - SATURDAY 5 MARCH - 7.30 PM
If you are coming to the HT Quiz and Curry night tomorrow, just a reminder that there will be a fully stocked bar (selling beer, wine, prosecco and soft drinks) plus a great raffle, so don't forget to bring your wallets! The lower playground will be open for parking.
 
YEAR 3 CAKE SALE – FRIDAY 11 MARCH
The final cake sale of the term is next Friday (11 March) and is for Year 3, so please could Year 3 parents send in cakes/biscuits (things like fairy cakes/flapjacks etc) on Friday morning. No nuts please. The children love the cake sales so please do try and send cakes so that there are enough to go around.

The cakes are sold to the children during school time in the afternoon. We suggest you send your child in with £1 to buy cakes. If there are any cakes left over, we sell them after school. Please look out for emails from your class reps asking for help with this cake sale.
 
PHIL THE BAG – WEEK COMMENCING MONDAY 11 APRIL
Phil the Bag is back! Why not have a clear out over Easter and raise money for the school?

Please keep all your old clothes and shoes as we will be collecting them during the week beginning 11 April (final collection day Thursday 14 April). All unwanted textiles welcome - adult and children’s clothing, shoes, handbags, belts, hats, curtains, school uniform and bedding (no ripped or stained items please).  Phil the Bag no longer give out bags, any types of bin bags/plastic bags are fine.


Lost: Jarod Simoes (5S) has mislaid his named PE kit. Please could you check your bags in case it was picked it up by mistake. Thank you.

From Fear to Friend

Free classes are being offered to help children overcome their fear of dogs. Imagine a child unable to go to the park, the beach, or even walk to school – not because of disability, but because of a debilitating fear of dogs. This newly formed voluntary group runs regular free classes teaching children aged 5 to 11 how to relax in the company of dogs without worrying.
Sessions are carefully structured with the children always supervised and participating within their own comfort zone, only coming into contact with the dogs when they are ready to do so. The free classes take place from 5pm to 6pm on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Children from all local areas are welcome.
