HTPD 24/6/16

24 June 2016

Dear Parents,

With the country in a state of political upheaval, the school remains an oasis of care, good relationships and kindness. Our Year 6 children spent the whole week together in the beautiful surroundings of Preston Montford in Shropshire. I was lucky enough to take part too and was delighted to see how independent, self-assured and enthusiastic all the children were. As they look towards their own futures at secondary school and beyond, they seem to be well equipped to face any challenge. The photos on Twitter show how happy they all are, enjoying a long walk over the Stiperstones, eating delicious, locally-sourced food, writing poems about the historical significance of Ironbridge, laughing with friends…and meeting a particularly strict Victorian headteacher!

I travelled back early to be here to greet our new Year 3 children who spent Thursday and Friday at the junior school meeting their new teachers and excitedly exploring their new environment. The older children met them with loving acceptance and a warm welcome. I hope that, as our country considers its future role in the world, we can all become more child-like and open hearted. Even the youngest children had an adventure with their first day trip – our reception classes were so excited to be travelling by coach to the Look Out Discovery Centre where some of them bravely climbed to the very top of the lookout tower. I know that another particular highlight was having a picnic lunch. It’s all part of “learning to live”!

We would like to let you know that Lesley Reeves, the finance manager, has accepted a voluntary settlement as part of the restructure of the school’s administrative functions and as such, recently left employment with the school.  She has always worked with the highest levels of professionalism and integrity and we offer her our very best wishes for the future.

Our assembly theme this week was centred on Jesus’ words that we should all be like light to the world, using our best ideas, creativity and talents to make the world a better place. I’m finding encouragement in the optimism of our children as they learn to embrace the future with hope and confidence. I do hope everyone enjoys a long weekend, with the school closed on Monday for our midsummer holiday. See you on Tuesday.

With best wishes, Clare

As part of our assembly series a group of children in Year 5 wrote a poem about the Olympic Values. They're good words to focus on:

The Olympic Values

Respect is treating someone right,
Looking up to them and smiling bright.

Equality is treating everyone the same,
And not giving anyone the blame.

Excellence is aiming high,
Reaching up to touch the sky.

Determination is doing your best,
Even when you want to rest.

Courage is always keeping sane,
Saying you can do it again and again.

Friendship is love and care,
Making sure you're always there.

Inspiration comes in many shapes and sizes,
Be prepared for some surprises!

By Mathilda, Maddie, Megan and Lucy.

The school will be closed on Monday 27 June for the mid-summer holiday.

INFANT

Lego Club, Tuesday 28 June
Lego Club with Sarah is cancelled next Tuesday.

Sports Day, Tuesday 12 July
We aim to start at 9.15am and parents are welcome to wait on the field after drop-off. Further details to follow.

Driving in Semaphore Road
Please avoid turning in the staff car park entrance as this is too dangerous when children are crossing at pick up and drop off times. We do ask parents to observe the unofficial one-way system down Semaphore Road (from Pewley Hill to Pewley Way) which means that there is no need to turn in the road.

Run to Rio update: The updated total for week 9 is: 3636.

Lost:
Amber Grundy, Beech Class, has lost her (probably named) Shackleton cardigan at Run to Rio on the field on Tuesday. It may have been mistakenly taken home by another child, possibly in Year R.
Esther Mitchell, Oak Class, has lost her complete PE kit including her school shoes.
