Junior 27/6/13

27 June 2013

Dear Parents

Someone said that children learn seven times faster outside than inside. I have no idea who came up with this rather spurious finding, but it is interesting and surprising that children need space and time to really succeed in learning. The other statistic I heard on the ‘One Show’ was about children playing outdoors. Apparently one third of under 10s have never climbed a tree, only 2% of primary children cycle to school and almost no children play in the road. (They do in my road all the time so that beats the statistics!).

I’m sure that you agree with me that outside learning and adventure are great things and are a blessed antithesis to the constant absorption and interaction with screens! How often have you found yourself fiddling with your phone while watching television?

As a school we do seek to encourage life in the great outdoors. Building camps and making toys from twigs is a very popular part of Fluffy Fridays and the Year 4 camping trip to Bentley Copse is an opportunity to realise that it is possible to live completely outside for three days.

Years R, 1 and 2 enjoy their weekly trips to the Wild Place. Such a wide variety of activities happen there and it is often a place to suspend disbelief and enter a world of imagination.

At the other end of the school, in Year 6, Trinity Trek is a great opportunity for children to spend 24 hours stretching, in a safe environment, their abilities to walk, set up camp, cook their own food and sleep (?!!?) through the night. It is a great experience; optional – but all the Year 6 children took part.

I do hope this weekend the weather will enable us to get outside and get stuck into our own adventure!

With very best wishes,
Richard

Focus Group
If you are interested in giving input to our Ofsted Action Plan and School Development Plan, may I remind parents that the Focus Group will have its initial meeting on Thursday, 4th July at 7.45 p.m. at Holy Trinity. It is not too late to join the group – just turn up or better still, drop me an email and then I will add your name to the list of parents who have already been in touch, and you will be sent some papers before the meeting.

Reading Partners has proved to be successful in developing children’s reading skills, both accuracy and comprehension. At 8:45am on Tuesday, July 9th, we invite you to have coffee and learn more about this intervention and possibly consider joining the team. We shall finish at 9:30am. Kate, a current reading partner, will be there to share her thoughts and answer questions. Please email Lynn lynne@holytrinity.surrey.sch.uk if you’re coming.
