HTPD 7/7/17

07 July 2017

Dear Parents,

I’m delighted to report on this year’s district sports triumph! On Monday afternoon, 70 children represented the junior school at the Spectrum competing against other Guildford schools and, as well as huge numbers of individual wins, we were thrilled to be awarded the overall trophy for our team’s success. As well as superb athletic skills, the children showed fantastic team spirit, supported each other brilliantly and behaved exceptionally well! Superb ambassadors for the school! Thanks also go to the sports staff who throughout the year have enabled over 60% of the junior school children to compete in inter-school events.

As I write, Year 3 are heading back from their day out at Newlands’ Corner ready for a sleepover in school tonight. Seeing how excited they were and how ready for adventure, I reflected on what happens in the course of a year: ninety six children working together as a team, all enjoying the company of their teachers and friends – it’s hard to believe that less than a year ago they were tentatively taking their first steps into junior school life.

Our focus across all year groups is now on transitioning children into their new classes and for some, into new schools. We are talking to the children about “embracing the future with hope and confidence” and giving them strategies to move on successfully. At the infants, the first “move up” morning went really well, but we are also making sure that the children continue learning right up to the summer break with school trips, International Days, preparation for celebration afternoon and lots of outdoor learning in this beautiful sunshine!

Hope to see you at Sports’ Day on Tuesday (straight after morning drop off at the infants, and straight after lunch at the juniors).

With best wishes
Clare

INFANT

Sports Day, Tuesday 11 July, 9.15 am
Please wait up on the field after drop-off; we aim to start the races at 9.15am. Children will be sitting in their house groups and these areas will be clearly marked. Please stand at the outside edges of the field to watch your children.

Children will need their PE kit (house T shirt, shorts and well-fitting trainers) on Tuesday.

  • Year 2 will keep their PE kit in school and change in the morning.
  • Year 1 should come to school in PE kit ready for sports day.
  • Year R should also come to school in PE kit, and these will be sent home on Monday.

Please ensure that your child has a water bottle and sun hat in school that day.

Celebration afternoon, Wednesday 19 July, 1.30pm
Everyone is invited to come and enjoy the children’s work in the classrooms on Wednesday 19 July.

YEAR 2:
  • Chestnut Class packed lunches, 12 July: A reminder that children in Chestnut Class should bring a packed lunch from home on Wednesday.
  • Dinosaur Museum, Friday 14 July, 9.30 am: Walnut Class parents should visit the café first, then the museum; Chestnut Class will visit the museum first then the café.
  • Leavers’ Assembly, Wednesday 19 July, 9.30 am: Year 2 parents are invited to attend the Leavers’ Assembly on Wednesday 19th. They are also invited to the Celebration afternoon the same day but we understand if, following the Leavers’ Assembly in the morning, you would rather wait to look at children’s books when they come home at the end of the week.

Golden Boot Challenge
Well done to everyone for taking part and making an effort to come to school in greener ways. Walnut Class were the overall winners and received the Golden Boot trophy and Willow Class were runners up. Both classes were awarded with the Golden Boot badge.

Teacher-led clubs
All of the teacher-led clubs have now finished, apart from Andy’s clubs (Multi Sports – Tuesday, Ball Games – Wednesday) which will run for a further week.

Year 1
Please return the ‘Child Information’ form for swimming next year to the school office by Tuesday 11 July.

Run to Sochi
We are now on the way back from Sochi, and in weeks 9 and 10 we ran 490 miles.

Lost:
Jonas & Marcus Spicer (Year R) have each lost a pair of named PE shorts.
Sophia Pentikainen (Hazel) has lost a pair of size 13 Clark’s black school shoes with a bow on the front – possibly taken home in error.
Arthur Mackie (Oak) has lost his book bag and a Barcelona cap.
Our lost property box at the lower entrance is overflowing, please have a look if your child has any uniform items missing.

FOPS News

New FOPS committee needed
Another school year is drawing to an end and we are looking for a new chair or a small group of chair persons to take over running FOPS from September. Can YOU help? It’s a great opportunity to get involved with the school community, raise funds, organise social events and make great changes for all our children a reality. With educational budgets tightening the fund raising role of the PTA is becoming more and more vital so please consider it carefully. To find out more please email Jill, Nicci or Sue or nab us for a chat.

Please don’t forget Cavender Sales & Lettings in Guildford (our major sponsor now for the third year running) will donate £250 to the school if you decide to rent your property through them or if you sell a property through them, they will donate £500. So if you are thinking about either, please get in contact with them www.cavenders.co.uk.

SUMMER FAIR – BEACH PARTY- THANK YOU!
A massive thank you to everyone who helped at last week’s Summer Fair. The weather was very kind to us, there was a great atmosphere and it was lovely to see the children having such a brilliant time. Our initial estimates show that we raised over £4,000 which is a fantastic result – thank you for all your support.

A special thanks also to Cavenders Sales & Lettings who sponsored our top raffle prize of an Apple watch.

CLASS REPS NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR
A huge thank you to all the class reps for all they have done this year, we have had some fabulous events and raised a fantastic amount of much needed money for the school.

You will soon know which class your child is going to be in next year and perhaps you might consider taking on the role of class rep next year? The support from this team of volunteers is particularly important when it comes to organising our main events, as the PTA really wouldn’t function without them. If you would like to know more about what the role involves or volunteer your services, please contact Ros Vickerman rosalindvickerman@yahoo.com or Carrie Witts carriewitts@gmail.com

Amazing Art Club: Engaging, Creating, Inspiring!
Come along and have fun learning a mixture of drawing skills, painting techniques and how to construct in 3-d (including puppets/ mechanical objects/ paper engineering/bookart) whilst looking at a range of artists and applied artists for inspiration. Key to the sessions is that your child develops their own voice, sustains focus, finds solutions, explores ideas and ways of working that they find interesting whilst learning new skills and a context for their work. It is stealth learning!

Sessions are run by artist Sophie Artemis www.sophieartemis.com. See website for gallery of children's work. Sophie has 2 sons and loves making artist's books and painting (work collected by the Tate Gallery and the V&A Museum) in her studio in Guildford. This popular club has been running since 2013.  Maximum 10 spaces so book early: Starts THURSDAY 5th October, all materials included in the price. (I will be in New York hence the late start of term). Tel: 07855 622303 or email 2sophieartemis@gmail.com

FUNDRAISING FOR DISABILITY CHALLENGERS, GUILDFORD
This month we'll be cycling two beautiful, hilly, long rides. The first is this weekend in the beautiful (!) Welsh valleys.... and the second is the Prudential London 100. 100 miles from London through the Surrey Hills and back including a few infamous Surrey hills climbs! We are raising money for Disability Challengers in Guildford, a lovely local fun place that supports Evie & many other families who have a child with a disability. They are brilliant but desperately NEED more funding.
If you have a few pennies to spare, we would be most grateful of your sponsorship to help us reach our team target. Many thanks, Carrie Witts, Fiona Mavani and Jane Rosie (Year 5 mums).
