20 July 2012

Dear parents

So we have arrived at another end of the school year. We have had “graduation” ceremonies for Year 2 and Year 6 and everyone seems well prepared for the next exciting steps. As the children left the disco last night at about 8.10 pm there was a bright rainbow right over Holy Trinity and Pewley Down school. Joseph Harwood was heard to remark that it was “very serendipitous” (we teach good vocabulary at HTPD) and so it was a mark of God’s faithfulness to us in all circumstances.

At both schools we have been following the life story of Joseph and this week have got to the end of the story and the stunning dramatic moment of Joseph revealing himself to his brothers. Joseph’s story also teaches us that through good times and hard times God has a plan and purpose for our lives.  We pray for all our school community that, as Robert reminded us in the service yesterday, we will put our hand into his hand and feel sure of his presence.

We are already looking forward to the next exciting year of the school with the leadership team having its first planning meeting this Thursday!  In the meantime, have a great holiday, enjoy the Olympics, make lots of memories, keep safe and we look forward to seeing you all again on September 5th.

With best wishes
Richard

13 July 2012

Dear Parents

Well there I was on Monday morning signing 4TJs reports when Sue came in and said that I had a phone call from Tribal.  This is a name to bring very high levels of attention to any head.  Tribal is the main provider of Ofsted inspections! I was told that we would have an inspection at Pewley Down.  For various reasons I had been expecting one for the juniors but not the infants.  I immediately rang Nicola and soon we were meeting as a leadership team.

I like short notice inspections, there is time to smarten up a bit, but not enough to become stressed thinking what else can I do?  As soon as the word got out everyone pulled together to help.  The team really swung into action; parents, governors, teachers from Holy Trinity and of course all the staff at Pewley.  There were some late nights and early mornings as everything was made ready.

So on Wednesday at about 7.45 am they arrived.  It matters so much how the team understand the school and for a positive relationship to be made between them and us!   We were fortunate to have two kind and sensitive inspectors who I could relate to and this really helped the inspection to go well.

So it was two days when everything was looked at from policies to fences and from behaviour to school meals.  Almost every parent had returned the questionnaire – thank you – and a third inspector collated the results.  At the heart were our children who showed themselves as the wonderful, confident and independent people they are.  The children were introduced to the inspectors and were keen to talk to them.  One of our youngsters had a vibrant conversation with an inspector about whether a book was fiction or not and another asked when the inspector thought he would die.  Great lessons were observed, all part of our pre-planned Olympic Week. At the end of the first day additional documentation was called for and duly produced.  Lesson observations continued right through till 2.00pm yesterday.  Nicola, Helen and I all did joint observations with the inspectors.

Stress levels were sky high and we came together, inspectors and senior team, to hear feedback.  And really that’s as far in the story as I can go!!  The report will be published on Tuesday 4 September, our first day of term.I am looking forward to you receiving the report; I think it will show a clear picture of our school.  I’m really sorry I can’t share the results with you yet.  Suffice to say the staff are unable to wipe the smile off their faces and I have to get a champagne stain out of my tie.

We are so sorry to be saying goodbye to Thabo Metcalfe at the end of term.  His last day will be Thursday 17 July.  He has made a great contribution to HTPD and we will really miss him.  He is going to the International School in Cambodia.  We wish Thabo and his family all the best on this adventure.

With best wishes, Richard

Thank you to parents:   All of the staff at Pewley Down would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to every single person who helped us make the school look the best it can be this week. We were incredibly touched and absolutely overwhelmed by your support whether you swept the playground, tidied a display or even did the washing up - you really made a difference!

Thank you to FOPS:   Another really big ‘thank you’ to FOPS for their hard work all year, but especially in organising the Summer Fair on Sunday in difficult conditions with such changeable weather. See the FOPS section for more details.

Olympic toy competition:   Thank you so much to everyone for the fantastic Olympic toy designs. We have been amazed by your inspiration and creativity. The winners from each year are: Rishi Bhardwaj and Thew Teerasakkul (Year R), Ethan Cashmore & Millie Chalmers (Year 1), Flora Michie & Caitlin Haresnape (Year 2) and the overall winner is: Elspeth Hoar ((Year 2). We will be keeping the toys in school until Monday as we would really like to showcase them as part of the curriculum evening. Please make sure you go up to the hall to see them.

Olympic values: All this week we have been working around the theme of Olympic values and at the end of the Pewley Pentathlon today each house was awarded with a value:
Mandela (friendship and respect); Keller (friendship and determination); Nightingale (friendship and courage) and Shackleton (friendship and excellence).

Curriculum Evening, Monday 16th, 2.30-3.30 pm:   Parents are invited to come along on Monday afternoon to have a look at the work we have been doing during curriculum week. Please collect your child from their classroom on arrival and they will then show you round the school. If you return to the classroom when you have finished looking round you will be able to collect their folders to take home.

Freddie Fit, Tuesday 17th :   On Tuesday morning Freddie Fit will be coming in to work with Year R and Year 1. To cover the cost of these sessions we are requesting a contribution of £2.00.

Year 2, Tuesday 17th :   We are really looking forward to our trip to the beach on Tuesday. If you haven’t yet returned your permission slip please bring it in on Monday. We are very happy for children to bring buckets and spaces, kites, frisbees and footballs – but they must be labelled.

Leavers’ Assembly, Thursday 19th :   Year 2 parents are invited to the Leavers’ Assembly at 9.15 am on Thursday.

END OF TERM, Friday 20th at 12.00.

FOPS NEWS
A HUGE thank you to everyone who helped out with the Summer Fair last weekend and who came along to support it. We said the Fair would be on, "come rain or shine", and it did .... both! We raised just over £2600, so thank you!!

If anyone would be interested in running the IQ Christmas card scheme this year, please let Louise know (louise.keiller@gmx.com). We have already registered for an early-bird deal; the designs will need to be drawn early in September. The task basically consists of collecting in the money, sending off the order and then bagging up the cards once they arrive. It is not an onerous job, but it would greatly help the new committee if someone could take over the project. Thank you.

Thank you to Cecily Poole who has run the second hand uniform sales for many years but is leaving in the summer as her children move on to Holy Trinity. If anyone is interested in taking this on please contact the office or Cecily direct (01483 302008). It’s not a lot of work – sorting out the uniform for a couple of sales a year.

Dates for your diary for next term:

Wednesday 5 September - First day of term (Years 1 and 2)
Thursday 6 September - First day of term (Year R)

Piano lessons
•A fun introduction to playing the piano and reading music. I have one or two slots available from September. Please contact David Hyde tel: 01483 237141 or e-mail: waggydee@btinternet.com.
•Our piano teacher Liz also (Surrey Arts) has slots at HT and PD in September. Children should be aged 6 and above. The contact number in last week’s newsletter was incorrect and should have read: 01276 20095.

Can you help? Have you seen / taken home / tidied away a reusable bag (possibly Sainsbury’s) with unsold toys and some new items including colouring marker pens and a wooden box (bought by my daughter at the fair)? There were 3 reusable bags stuffed full of unsold toys which were going to the charity shop after the summer fair. The bags were towards the back of the hall at about 4 pm on Sunday. Please contact the school office if you can help. Thank you – Melanie Baxter (Ben Alexander’s mum, Walnut).

The information collected will be used for the purpose of the student’s dissertation at the University of Surrey to gain a better understanding of the research topic “An Exploration of Family Events at G Live.” All information is completely anonymous and anyone who chooses to leave the survey can do so at any time without penalty. All participants will be entered into a free draw for four complimentary tickets to a forthcoming family show at G Live. The participants cannot unfortunately choose their own show. Organised by Guildford Cathedral and Lanesborough School, with the support of Surrey Arts, we rehearse in central Guildford eight times a term on Fridays from 4.15-5.15pm, and have an end of term concert, usually, at Guildford Cathedral. Dads’ Day

Olympic Torch Event Tickets in Stoke Park
Please can anybody help? I was not able to get any tickets for the event on 20th July (despite applying from 9.30am). I am desperately trying to get hold of 4 tickets so that we can see Polly representing the school, holding the HTPD flag along the torch bearer’s route. I have asked lots and lots of people, and am now getting a bit worried that she will have to go alone. If you have a ticket that you will not be using please could you let me know? Many thanks. Amanda Moon (Polly 5M). Guildford 503835.

Dinosaur Quiz
Congratulations to Flora in Walnut Class for winning the Dinosaur Quiz. You certainly know your dinosaurs! Please see Ritvik or Marius for your prize.

Volunteers
Strong volunteers needed to dig the steep bank at the side of the playground so that we can plant some big new shrubs. Please contact Sarah McKenzie or the school office.

Building work at Mount Alvernia
Mount Alvernia has had planning approval for an integrated cancer centre with work starting over the summer. Although this will be created largely by refurbishing existing space there will be some building work which may have an impact on traffic in Harvey Road.

PUPS Parents
Sarah Taylor has decided to leave pups at the end of this term due to family commitments. She has worked at PUPs for the past 15 months and enjoyed her time at the after-school club. She will be missed by all the children who attend PUPs as well as the PUPs team. We wish to thank her for all her hard work at pups.

Spanish Club
Learn Spanish while having fun! Small groups after school on Tuesdays from 3.00 to 4.00 pm. We do have a couple of places for next term starting in September. If you would like more information please e-mail: soiamaskell19@hotmail.com . Otherwise there will be Enrolment Forms at the School Reception if your son/daughter is interested. I will be away all school holidays and back on the 7th September. Gracias.
