HTSC 26/1/18

26 January 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week I have had to remind some of the older children about our policy on mobile phones. Whilst as a staff we are big fans of technology, we also prioritise children’s safety and for that reason we ask that no personal devices (or in fact any electronic toys) are brought into school. If there are exceptional reasons for any child to bring a mobile in, we would ask parents / carers to write to their child’s class teacher seeking permission. That device must then be handed in at the start of the school day and collected when the child goes home. We will be reminding the children in Year 5 and Year 6 about this, but would ask for your support as well.

Next Wednesday evening at 6.45pm, there will be an interesting opportunity for parents to learn more about online safety (both mobile phone technology, iPads, tablets and other internet devices). Ofsted, working together with the Breck Foundation will be presenting a live webinar and we have registered to take part. The webinar will be screened in the Chapel at the juniors and it will apparently highlight the dangers and risks posed by children’s use of the internet. Lorin Le Fave, founder of the Breck foundation, whose son’s tragic story I’m sure you’ll know, will be providing guidance to schools and parents about keeping children safe online. The webinar should last around an hour. It is not aimed at children so I’m afraid you’ll need to organise childcare should you wish to attend. Please email hts@htpd.surrey.sch.uk to let us know if you are intending to come. I do hope that working together we can protect our children and ensure they learn to navigate this tricky technological world.

On another topic, I do want to say how pleased I am that so many children are taking part in our vast number of extracurricular clubs! Every evening, and every lunch time, and sometimes even before school begins there is something different to choose from. I’m sure you’ll want to join me in thanking our dedicated teachers who willingly go the extra mile every week! It’s great to see new skills being learned, confidence being found, new friends being made and bridges across year groups being built. Can you believe we had 84 children playing hockey last night? Amazing!

Today also marks the end of our house music celebrations. At the infants, the children have enthusiastically taken part in a range of different musical activities working in their house groups. Meanwhile at the juniors, the children enjoyed superb house performances earlier in the week, with a small selection of musicians then selected to play today in front of the whole school. We were all impressed by every performer’s skills and musicality. Thank you for encouraging those that took part, helping them to practise and giving them confidence to overcome their nerves. What a great end to the week!

And then, next week we’re looking forward to Fluffy Friday! Please do remember to send in £1 (or £3 for those doing the Boogie Pumps activity) so that we can continue to fund this great day each term, as well as permission slips for offsite activities. Do come along and lend a hand, especially for the offsite options, for either all or part of the day. We can’t do it without you!

Enjoy the weekend.

With best wishes
Clare

Staff Car Parks
Please could we remind parents not to use the staff car parks at either the junior or infant site. Our car parks are only just large enough to accommodate staff cars and are particularly busy in the morning when staff are arriving. Thank you for your cooperation.

Bedtime Story, Wednesday 7 February, 5.15-6.00pm
Children are invited to come back to school in their pyjamas, dressing gowns or onesies and bring a cuddly toy if they would like to. They should go straight to their classrooms on arrival where they will be sharing bedtime stories with their class teachers. Parents are very welcome to come to the hall where FOPS will be providing refreshments.

Spring Term Languages Coffee Morning, Thursday 8 February, 9.00–10.00am in the school hall
Many languages are spoken at HTPD. If you or your children are bi-lingual, multi-lingual or speak English as an additional language, please join us in the hall on 8 February for coffee and a chat. We will have maths and English teaching resources available for you to look at, and you will be able to learn a bit more about how children learn at Pewley Down. If you don’t speak another language but would like to come along you are very welcome.

A reminder to bring in your £5 donation towards the Egg Hatching Experience if you have not already done so.

HTPD 19/01/18

19 January 2018

Dear Parents,

We’re starting to make plans for this term’s Fluffy Friday which is on Friday 2nd February. Thank you to all the parents who have already been in touch to offer to run activities or help out. It promises to be an excellent day! Do put the date in your diary and consider joining us for some or all of the day. Just let your child’s teacher know if you can come along. There’s a whole range of different ways to help out.

I was so encouraged to meet with many of our parent volunteers this week. Over the course of 4 meetings, I spoke with over 50 helpers. How fantastic to have such an amazing team of willing people who help improve what we can offer each and every day to all the children at HTPD. We talked through the ways the school ensures that children are safe and well cared for. Do look at the child protection section of our website if you have any questions about this vital area of school life.

Year 5 today have visited the Neasden Hindu Temple as part of their RE curriculum. It’s an amazing place and the hospitable welcome extended to visitors is admirable. The beauty of the place always provokes a response of awe and wonder. Similarly, Year 2 walked to the Wild Place earlier in the week and considered things that made them say “Wow!” – the teachers were delighted by the children’s detailed pondering! Noticing the markings on a twig, feeling the cold wind on their faces, and scrunching through fallen leaves all led to exclamations of joy. It was a great way to see “Heaven in the moment.” How lovely to find beauty in such simple things!

With best wishes
Clare

HTPD 12/1/18

12 January 2018

Dear Parents,

It has been great this week to see the focus and enthusiastic learning across all the classes. The children have been really working hard and making the most of every lesson. Do talk to them about what they have been doing – take a look at the JTLYK pages to help the conversation along.

I met with the Surrey educational welfare officer this week for a termly update and she was pleased to see how many children across the school have good attendance. It’s so important that the children are in school whenever they can be – it’s much harder to catch up with lessons missed. She notices every child whose attendance drops below 90% which is actually quite a small number of absences. I really appreciate how good our attendance figures are. Thank you so much for your support in this.

We’re looking forward to another term of house events. At the juniors, the children heard today about a new house challenge. Each week they will be collecting gold tokens when they are spotted living out our school values in all sorts of different ways. For example they might have been polite, especially helpful, tidied up or supported a class mate. I wonder which house will be the first weekly champions. Also later this month, we will be enjoying music medley, where the children at the juniors volunteer to perform to their house group (Wednesday 24th January). It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn performance skills and we are always impressed by the children’s musical talents. Do encourage them to get practising if they are keen to play. At the infants the children are given the opportunity to try out some different musical activities and the annual cup-stacking competition is also hotly anticipated!

I hope you have a good weekend.

With best wishes
Clare

CLOSING DATE FOR PRIMARY APPLICATIONS – 15 January 2018
A final reminder that the deadline for applications to Year R and Year 3 for September 2018 is Monday 15 January. Online applications can be made via Surrey County Council’s website: www.surreycc.gov.uk/admissions.

IS YOUR CHILD ELIGIBLE FOR FREE SCHOOL MEALS?
Please register by Wednesday 17 January. Please contact the school office if there is any possibility that your child is eligible to receive free school meals or if you would like advice about this scheme. Free school meals are available for any child whose parent/guardian is in receipt of Income Support, Income Based Job Seeker’s Allowance or, in certain circumstances, Child Tax Credit. Free school meal registration brings significant funding for the school from the government to support your child’s education in many ways, through the Pupil Premium scheme and other budget funding factors. Registering for free school meals is of course entirely confidential - speak to Sheryl at HT hts@htpd.surrey.sch.uk or Jane at PD info@htpd.surrey.sch.uk.

Even if you do not wish to take up the free school dinner, or your child is receiving free infant meals, there are educational benefits for your child if you are registered for free school meals. Further details and an application form are included in our Parentmail.

Parent volunteers
A reminder that meetings for parent volunteers will be taking place next week.  It is very important that you attend one of the sessions when Clare will be discussing volunteers’ roles in relation to the Child Protection (Safeguarding) Policy and procedures.

Holy Trinity - Wednesday 17 January 8.45am and 2.25pm

have released sales information regarding tickets for their concert on 21 March 2018. Tickets go on sale on Thursday 8 February and prices will be £8.50 + 50p Booking Fee - £9.00 to parents

  • Tickets will be sold from 8th February - at 4 tickets per family (The Box Office can only interpret this as 4 tickets per phone call/ internet booking – but hopefully it gives a message that we need to share around tickets fairly.)
  • From 23 February all remaining tickets can be sold freely to anyone.
  • There are 24 ‘accessibility seats’ in the auditorium - some at stalls level and some at balcony level. They are intended for people with mobility problems, or who need a carer, or for people with a condition that would necessitate them sitting in these seats. Any of the audience who feels that they need one of these seats, should apply by telephone or in person to the Box Office for an accessibility seat. If the person requires a carer, the carer can also sit in an accessibility seat and is provided with a free ticket. The accessibility seats will only be put on general release when all other seats have been sold (excluding seats that are being ‘held’ for VIPs and for the Schools staff).
  • Those with visual or hearing impairment, or people with autism, may also be eligible for these seats
  • Further information and details about arrangements will be sent out later. Please ask if you have any queries.

HTPD 5/1/18

05 January 2018

Dear parents,

It was great to have the children settled back into their classes today; they seemed very happy to be back and were enthusiastic to get straight on with learning, many of them setting ambitious targets and aspirational goals for 2018. Can I wish you, as I wished them in assembly this morning a very Happy New Year! January is always a good time for a fresh look at life, a blank page, a new start. I particularly enjoy a poem called “The Gate of the Year” which has the following opening lines:

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied:
“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”

I love the idea that whatever lies ahead we can trust God that He will guide us and will walk beside us. This term’s assembly series picks up similar themes of His constant support and provision. We will be taking inspiration from two key passages in the New Testament where we are encouraged to live as God intended us. From Ephesians 6 we look at the idea of putting on the full armour of God to face each of life's challenges. Meanwhile, alongside this idea each week, a different fruit will help us to look at what living life to the full might be, as we consider the fruits of the Spirit described in Galatians 5; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Linking the fruit of the Spirit to different delicious fruits each week will also help us to think about being healthy in body, mind and soul! Which reminds me to reinforce our healthy snack rules at the juniors. Please ensure that your child only brings in fruit or vegetables for morning break – it was good to see that the national news recently picked up on this healthy eating message as they publicised the concerns around sugary snacks. Take a look at the assembly slides each week on the website if you’d like to follow our fruit of the week ideas!

With best wishes
Clare
