HTPD 20/1/17

20 January 2017

Dear Parents,

It’s been lovely to host our Spanish partners at both schools this week – we were visited by two Spanish teachers and 11 children from Colegio San Gregorio, a school in Aguilar de Campoo which is just south of Santander. They have all enjoyed being part of the school community, visiting classes, interviewing children as part of the eTwinning project, playing with new friends and of course being tourists too. Huge thanks to our Year 6 host families who have looked after our visitors so well! I think one of their highlights has been the delicious food cooked by our new chef, Jon. He excelled himself by providing a Spanish themed lunch earlier in the week, and is treating them to genuine British fish ‘n’ chips today!

Next week we will be having a bit of a focus on looking after our possessions. I’m amazed at how much lost property is generated at both schools and would love to encourage the children to appreciate their things a bit more! Can I ask you to check this weekend that your children’s clothes are all named – obviously we can only return items which have names clearly marked in them. I’ll be encouraging all the teachers next week to write the children’s names in on any unnamed items when the children get changed for PE, so please make it easier for us by naming things in advance. Thank you so much!

Our assembly series has moved on to consider the attributes of God’s love with this week focusing on love being patient. Slowing down enough to notice is part of our school value of “seeing heaven in the moment” and we all appreciated some stillness and time to stop. Year 2 reflected on the beauty at the Wild Place and Year 5 were stunned by the craftsmanship and peace at the Neasden Hindu temple while other year groups listened to Pachelbel’s canon and simply stopped. I hope you have time to do the same this weekend.

With best wishes, Clare

Languages Coffee Morning, Tuesday 24 January, 9.00-10.00 am, School Hall
Many languages are spoken at HTPD. Are you or your children bilingual, multilingual or do you speak English as an additional language? Come along and join us next Tuesday morning for tea, coffee, biscuits and a chat. We will have maths and English teaching resources available for you to look at, and you will be able to learn a bit more about how children learn at Pewley Down. If you don’t speak another language but would like to come along you are very welcome.

Teacher-led club cancellation
Animal Arty Crafty with Nicola is cancelled on Thursday 26 January – apologies for the inconvenience.

Bedtime Story, Tuesday 7 February, 5.15 – 6pm
A date for your diary, this is an annual event when children return to school (in their pyjamas) at the end of the day for bedtime stories with their class teachers. FOPS are very kindly providing refreshments for parents in the hall (see also FOPS section below).

Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2017 - help needed
The Sainsbury’s voucher scheme will be starting quite soon (25 January) and we are looking for a parent volunteer to help co-ordinate the scheme this year. It’s not a big commitment but would be a great help to us. In previous years we have been able to buy lots of PE, cooking and other equipment with the vouchers collected. Please contact the school office if you might be able to help.

Found
Girls navy tights (Next age 5-6) accidentally taken home from Boogie Pumps on Monday.

FOPS News

Thanks to everyone who came along to our first FOPS Meeting of 2017 on Wed. It was great to hear from Debbie Chadwick and Tim Burgess about the exciting plans school has for rejuvenating the outside areas and encouraging wider play opportunities and we look forward to finding out more details - and exactly how we can ALL help - over the coming weeks.

Children’s Cake sale – Friday 3rd Feb 1.30-3.20pm
Friday 3rd Feb sees the return of the mega popular Children’s cake sale. This where we ask each child to bring in £1 so, after lunch, they can visit the hall with their class and choose two cakes – one to eat there and one to bring home. Of course we also need nut-free yummy cakes and cookies to sell - homemade or bought. Please can each child donate six goodies – these can be left either in the PPA room or the school foyer on the day. Any remaining treats will be on sale at 3pm in the playground. If you would like to help on the day please contact Helen Day (mum of Issy in Reception and William in YR1) helen@thomasday.co.uk.

Helpers for Bedtime Story – Tuesday 7th Feb 5.15-6pm
As you will have spotted on the JTLYK pages, the ever popular ‘Bedtime Story’ event is happening once again on Tues 7th Feb. This is where pupils can come back to school to and enjoy a cosy storytime with their class, while parents enjoy tea, coffee and a catch up with friends in the hall. To make this even more special FOPS provide hot chocolate and biscuits for the children to enjoy – but we do need help!! If you can lend a hand making hot chocolate or taking it into to class, please let Nicci, Jill or Sue or your class reps know.
