Junior 9/1/15

09 January 2015

Dear Parents,

How are your New Year’s resolutions going? I hope they will at least last until the end of the month. How SMART are they (Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Time Bonded). My resolution is all of these. It is to lose at least fourteen pounds and be comfortably running 10k before I climb Blencathra in the Lake District in the first weekend in July. So watch out for the newsletters on July 3rd and 10th and you will find out whether the targets were met and mountain climbed – the hard way.

We invited children to share their resolutions. Predictably the most common were: being kinder to my younger siblings, helping my mum more and improving my handwriting. We also had some more unusual including: playing the piano each day, not crying so much and being a better person. Perhaps we all strive to be better people, but how to do it? How do we organize our school family so that we are the loving and caring people we want to be? I think the ancient words of the prophet Micah give us a very good starting point.
He asks the question:
“And what does the Lord require of you?”
And the answer is:
“To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

These are great words for all of us as we enter 2015.

By the way if you haven’t made your resolution yet here are the top ten for UK for 2014:
1. Exercise more
2. Eat better
3. Cut down on alcohol
4. Stop smoking
5. Spend less time on Social Media
6. Learn a new language
7. Learn a musical instrument
8. Spend less money
9. Secure a dream job
10. Average 8 hours of sleep a night

With best wishes, Richard

Is your child eligible for free school meals? Please register before next Wednesday
Please contact the school office if there is any possibility that your child is eligible to receive free school meals or if you would like advice about this scheme and help in making an application. Free school meal registration brings significant funding for the school from the government to support your child’s education in many ways, through the Pupil Premium scheme and other budget funding factors. Registering for free school meals is of course entirely confidential. Speak to Lesley or email finance@holytrinity.surrey.sch.uk.
Even if you do not wish to take up the free school dinner, or your child is receiving free infant meals, there are nevertheless educational benefits for your child if you are registered for free school meals. This needs to be registered immediately as we have to send returns on January 15th.

Lunch discount: Don’t forget to avail yourselves again (or for the first time perhaps) of the termly discounts for school lunches. If you pay for the full spring term by 16 January, the discount price is £2.35 per meal, not the full £2.40. The termly amount payable differs slightly by year group to take account of days out, so consult the lunch price chart on the school website Payment page. After 16 January, we uprate discount payments to the full meal price on ParentPay. Lunch credits are only used when meals are actually taken, so you really can’t lose. Thanks, Lesley
