• HTPD GREAT MASQUERADE BALL - TICKETS ON SALE FROM 8.40AM ON FRIDAY 2 FEB

Infant 10/1/14

10 January 2014

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year. I do hope this will be a good year for you and your family. We have had a great start at HTPD. The children have come back refreshed and keen to work and I have already seen them fully engaged in their lessons. Finally the rain and the winds have ceased and the children are thriving in the winter sunshine.

This morning I told the juniors the story of St. Paul’s conversion and early life. We are basing our assemblies at both schools on his writings to the Galatians and Ephesians. Both schools will be thinking about the Fruit of the Spirit, those lovely nine attributes which Paul tells us should be growing in our lives; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The juniors will add to the Whole Armour of God, which tells us how we can live life to the very best. I think that it is going to be a great series.

As I often do, I received an email this week from a former student. This particular girl was telling me about her journey from Holy Trinity to Trinity College, Cambridge. I am going to start an Alumni section of the newsletter where we can put this information. If you are a former student of the school or friends or relatives were, please email me with news and we will be able to give HTPD family news and help people to keep in touch.

Laura, one of our mums at Pewley, has asked me to give details of a petition she is organising – see below. She is part of a group attempting to save Gosden House special school in Shalford/Bramley. Gosden House is a unique facility which does outstanding work with young people with learning difficulties. Please read what Laura has written and sign the petition.
With best wishes, Richard

PE
We are delighted to welcome the FA from next week. They are sending in one of their coaches to teach football skills to every class for 6 weeks. This is funded by the National Lottery, Tesco and the FA. Year 1 will go first, starting on Tuesday in their normal PE time. Year 2 will start after half term and Year R after Easter on a Monday afternoon. Please can you make sure your child have both their indoor (shorts and house t shirt) and outdoor (trainers - no plimsolls please, the field is too muddy and slippery - joggers, t shirt and sweatshirt) PE kits in school as usual so they don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity.

Assembly
This term our assemblies will focus on the Fruits of the Spirit (see Richard’s letter above). Each week we will be taking one as our theme and translating it into something we can do to make our school a better place. Next week it is love and we will be showing ‘love’ to our cloakrooms by keeping them really tidy. Children who are spotted keeping these values will receive a fruit sticker. Please support us by talking to your children about this. We will keep you up-dated about the themes each week.

Closing date for primary applications: Wednesday 15 January
A final reminder that if you have a child due to start school in September 2014 or a child in Year 2 transferring to junior school the deadline for applications is next Wednesday 15 January.

Lunch money
Please bring your lunch payments for this term up to the school office: £69 for the half term and £138 for the full term (cheques should be made payable to Pewley Down Infant School).

Nuts
A reminder that we are a nut-free school; please could you ensure that lunchboxes, as well as snacks brought in for clubs, do not contain nuts.

Is your child eligible for free school meals? Was your child adopted from care?
Please contact the school office if there is any possibility that your child may be able to receive free school meals or if you would like advice about this scheme and help in making an application. Free school meal registration brings significant funding for the school from the government to support your child’s education in many other ways, through the Pupil Premium scheme and other budget funding factors. Registering for free school meals is of course entirely confidential.

Even if you do not wish to take up the free school dinner but choose to send in packed lunches, there are educational benefits for your child if you are registered for free school meals. This needs to be registered immediately as we have to send returns off on next Thursday 16 January.

A new category for receipt of pupil premium has been introduced: those children adopted from care. If your child falls into this category, please contact the school office before Thursday 16 January.

Are you booking your summer holiday?
Please think about booking via easyfundraising.org.uk and choosing Friends of Pewley Down Infant School, Guildford as your cause to support. Most the big travel companies, airlines and car rental companies (Thomson, First Choice, Virgin, Haven, Easyjet, Eurocamp, Premier Inn, Disneyland, Cottages4you etc.) will donate a percentage of your holiday price to your chosen cause. Ferry companies and airport parking seem to offer particularly generous donation rates of up to 8%. This is a hassle free way to raise significant amounts of money to support school projects.

Save Gosden House School
Please could you take a few seconds to help save an incredible special needs school which our daughter has the privilege of attending: Gosden House School in Bramley. The school has been providing an outstanding education to children with learning difficulties and complex special needs for over fifty years, with life-changing results, yet, if the council’s current proposals go ahead, the school in its current form will be lost. Please help save it by visiting the parents’ website and clicking the link to sign the petition. It takes seconds but means so much. Thank you. Laura (Mum to Rohan, Oak Class)

Lost:
Milli Westlake (Walnut Class) has lost her Nightingale cardigan, sweatshirt and fleece – all named.
Ben Richmond (Beech) has misplaced his named Nightingale fleece.
Eddie Hay (Hazel) has lost his (named) Keller fleece.
Dylan Mavani (Chestnut) has lost his J2LYK book.

Found: Grey ‘AllSaints Spitalfields’ scarf – left at the Year 2 night out on Friday 6 December. Please contact the office.
