Junior 11/1/13

11 January 2013

Dear Parents,

I do hope you all had a happy Christmas and enjoyed the holidays. It was all a bit of a rush beforehand but we enjoyed the long break afterwards. It has been a really good start of term with the children, who seemed so exhausted a few weeks ago, now well rested and getting straight down to work.

This is a shorter term but a hugely important one for children’s learning. It is an uninterrupted time for concentrated effort and we know the children are capable of that. Actually, that’s why it is such a shame if families have to take time out of school during this term. In a very real way the children miss out a key part of the learning year. It seems to have a greater effect than just missing a few days of school.

This term our assembly series is based on 1 Corinthians Chapter 13 in the Bible; St Paul’s great poem about love. So our school motto will be changed for the term from ‘Learn to Live’ to ‘Learn to Love’! Each week we will hear a story from Winnie the Pooh at the Infants and our own soap opera ‘Doris and Douglas’ at the Juniors. These will illustrate all the facets of the beautiful diamond which is love. A class will learn and recite a love poem from poets as varied as Shakespeare and Roger Mcgough. All of this will show our value that ‘Everyone is treasured and loved as a unique child of God’.

With best wishes for a loving weekend!
Richard

Thought for the Week: Love is Eternal

Thank you
Just to thank everyone once again for the lovely Christmas cards and presents received at the end of term. Your kind wishes and generosity were really appreciated by the whole staff team.

Events Next Week
Swimming sessions for 3MG and 4N begin on Wednesday, 16th January

Clubs
Clubs start next week for the Spring term, please download a list here.

Rounders
Unfortunately, it is not possible to start Rounders club this half term as the lower playground is too crowded. We will start after half term (Tuesday 26th Feb) as we will have access to the lower playground as the new Chapel will be almost finished.

Gardening Club
Weather permitting, we will start both lunch time and after school gardening clubs the first week after half term (w/c Mon 25th Feb).

Start of School Day
Please remember that the school day starts at 0840, children may come in to the class from 0830. We would appreciate it if all children could be sat in their class for 0840 when teaching begins. This is a valuable time for teaching. If your child arrives before 0830 they should go to breakfast club.

Illnesses
We have a child at school with a very low immune system. Please do not send your child into school if they have chicken pox/shingles, measles, tonsillitis, sore throats, tummy bugs; vomiting; diarrhoea etc. or fever and other illnesses including bad chest / respiratory infections. Please make sure that they are clear of all symptoms for 24 hours before they return to school. Thank you.

Closing date for primary applications:  Tuesday 15 January 2013
If you have a child due to start school in September 2013 or a child in Year 2 transferring to junior school the deadline for applications is next Tuesday 15 January.  Even though Pewley Down is federated with Holy Trinity it is still necessary to complete an application form for entry to Year 3.  If you have not already done so, you will need to complete the Surrey County Council application form: http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/learning/schools/school-admissions .

In addition, applicants to Reception should complete the Pewley Down supplementary form and applicants for Year 3 should complete the Holy Trinity supplementary form and return these to the relevant school office.

Headlice
Unfortunately we have heard from families across the school that headlice have been found in their child’s hair. Please check your child every day and treat as appropriate. See NHS website for treatment information.
