HTPD 26/2/16

26 February 2016

Dear Parents,

All the children came back from the half term break refreshed and ready to learn – with only a few weeks until the Easter holidays everyone seems very determined to work hard. I’ve been so impressed with the quality of poetry, art work, letter writing and number skills being sent to me for Headteacher’s awards. It’s one of the best aspects of my job, talking with children about why I’m proud of them, and also why they are proud of themselves.

It’s even more rewarding when a group of children arrive together – I love seeing how supportive of each other they are, how much pleasure they each derive from each other’s work and also how much they are encouraged by comments from their peers. Research shows that children learn more from each other than from adults! I’m sure it’s true.

In our assemblies this week, we’ve been looking at the importance of friends. We looked at the New Testament story of the disabled man who was lowered down through the roof of a house in order to meet Jesus who then healed him. Like him, without the help of our friends, our lives are less fulfilled. As a school, we place a huge emphasis on relationships with each other, learning how to be more supportive and kind to those around us.

That’s one of the reasons why during Book week we will be working in our house teams rather than in our usual class settings – it’s a good way of growing new friendships. I’m looking forward to next week’s newsletter when I can report on how the week goes. Do keep an eye on Twitter though for regular updates each day….and don’t forget to book your tickets for the Saturday night quiz, a chance to have an evening with friends!

With best wishes
Clare

Book Week, 29 February – 4 March
We are all looking forward to Book Week next week. Children will be working in their house groups all week, and house t-shirts are optional (children can either wear their house t-shirts with normal uniform bottoms or their usual school uniform).

On Friday, to celebrate World Book Day, staff and children will be dressing up as book characters.

World Book Day vouchers will also be distributed next week and there will be a small supply of the £1 books available for the children to ‘purchase’ with their voucher. These books are also available from Waterstones. The voucher may be used against any book in bookshops.

Parents will need to supervise their child/children. If you are interested in coming along to the film please let Ali Fairbanks (Sophie’s mum Walnut), Leanna Donkin (Poppy’s mum Willow) or Sally Rolton (Marcus and Zach’s mum Walnut and Hazel) know (either in the playground or by email) as they will be issuing tickets to gain an idea on the amount of popcorn/squash.

This is also the same date as the Action Weekend where the school is hoping parents will put on their gardening gloves and help out to clear/tidy up the school grounds in readiness for Spring.

12 February 2016

Dear Parents,

You might have noticed the new giant television screen at the juniors which is now up and running in the forum. It has been generously provided by HTSC and replaces one that has been in place since that part of the school was opened! HTSC have also bought a wonderful set of Djembe drums which are being very well used as part of our music curriculum. At the infants, FOPS have been working with Julie, our site manager, to help fund improvements to the grounds, and we’re excited to be purchasing some more iPads to ensure there are enough to go around! Thank you so much to all of you for your energy in fundraising, generosity in giving and fantastic commitment to improving the children’s learning environment.

The highlight of my week was the Bedtime Story session at the infants. All the classrooms were filled with children snuggled up together with their teddies in their pyjamas and onesies, listening to their teachers read to them. The flickering firelight from the interactive whiteboards added to the atmosphere – but it really was magical to see how much everyone enjoyed themselves. Reading for pleasure is such a vital ingredient in learning to read. I hope you all have some time over the half term break to enjoy a good book together.

Today of course marks the end of this half term with a Fluffy Friday. The Surrey Advertiser heard about one of our activities run by St John Ambulance – and they sent along a photographer to capture the occasion on camera. It’s great to see that our wider curriculum, which focuses on the whole child enjoying learning in many diverse contexts, is being noted. It’s certainly been a busy day with activities at both the juniors and infants, some in school and some off site. Thanks to all our parent helpers who ensure that Fluffy Fridays provide such a fun way to learn. Have a chat with your child about what skills they’ve developed today – I asked some of them and had the following replies: “Getting along with others”, “Trying out something I’ve never done before”, “I didn’t think I’d make it, but I did. I learnt not to give up”, “I’ve learnt how to save a life”, “I’ve made new friends”….certainly a worthwhile day!

I do hope you all enjoy a super half term break. See you on Monday 22nd February.
With best wishes,
Clare

Board Games
Owing to the consistently high number of children attending Board Games I have reluctantly taken the decision to split the club in half. Beginning after half term Board Games will be for Years 3 and 4 only. For the first half of next term it will be for Years 5 and 6. I am sorry to have to do this but the children who do come along will have a better experience.

HTPD 5/2/16

05 February 2016

Dear Parents,

This coming Sunday (7th February) Holy Trinity Church will be holding their service in our school Chapel. The Guildford Shakespeare Company take over the church for a while performing “The Winter’s Tale”, so we welcome the congregation to come and worship at the school! This annual event is such a great opportunity for our parish church, which supports us in so many ways, to see school life first hand. They would be very keen to extend an open invitation to you all; the service will start at 10am and lasts for an hour, followed by coffee in the school library. I’m looking forward to speaking on this occasion, and other members of staff will also be taking part. I’ll be using one of the lines written on the wall of the Chapel, “I have come that you may have life and life to the full” exploring how Jesus’ words are lived out in our community, both in school and in the town. It would be lovely to see some of you there.

Hosting visitors in school reminds me to tell you about our annual survey of parents’ views which you should see coming home in book bags over the next few days. We are keen to know how welcoming you find the school, whether or not the sites are easy to navigate, as well as how accessible they are for people with particular needs. We’re also keen to hear your opinions on our before and after school care (Breakfast club, PUPS and Clubs+). Even if you’ve only occasionally used them, we’d love you to respond. Thanks in advance – I’m looking forward to reading all the replies.

It’s been a great week at both the infants and juniors. Year 1 have enjoyed a marvellous week of art, culminating in a stunning exhibition this afternoon, Year 2 dressed up as Antarctic explorers which resulted in some wonderful writing, Year 4 pretended to be Roman centurions on Hadrian’s Wall, Year 5 have visited the science museum in Winchester and Year 6 have learnt all about the circulation (including one of the highlights of our science curriculum, watching a surgeon dissect a heart!). I love seeing the children enjoying learning so much!

With best wishes
Clare
