Infant 5/12/14

05 December 2014

Dear Parents,

I wonder what your childhood memories are of Christmas? Perhaps it was different each year or maybe you had a pattern which was always followed. My memory is of travelling back from Hascombe to Godalming in my uncle’s old baker’s van along icy roads with all of our family hanging on for dear life. The smell of fresh bread and cold, which takes your breath away, evokes those memories at this time of the year.

Of course the nativity play at Busbridge School, performed in the parish church is another great memory. A script which never changed, hoping to get a main part, finally achieving the second King and feeling like I was on the West End Stage. A recent survey has shown that less than half of primary schools do a traditional nativity play and we are two of these schools not doing one this year. Do not worry I’m pretty sure that normal service will be resumed next year. The infants (where Mary and Joseph do make an appearance) is about how a child can bring peace and in the juniors the horror of World War I is contrasted with the peace and harmony of the Christmas Day Truce in 1914. Both performances are very moving and point us directly to the Prince of Peace and the message of the angels to the shepherds.
Peace on Earth and Goodwill to everyone.

With so many conflicts around the world I am reminded of the words from the Carol ‘It came upon a midnight clear’
“And man at war with man hears not
The love song which they bring
O hush your noise, you men of war
And hear the angels sing”
This Christmas time as you watch or remember our Christmas plays, I pray you will know peace in your families, your communities and in your heart.
With best wishes, Richard
