HTPD 28/4/17

28 April 2017

Dear Parents,

With the summer term properly underway, we have now begun our new assembly series which this term is based upon John Bunyan’s book, Pilgrim’s Progress. In the book, Christian, a traveller, journeys through the countryside on a quest for a perfect place – God’s heavenly city. We have asked the children each week, taking a class at a time, to describe a special place that they love to visit. This week it was the turn of Walnut class and 6T. It’s interesting how all ages of children, and in fact adults too, seem to find most peace in the outdoors. I’m hoping the weather is slightly warmer this weekend to take a trip out into the woods. Perhaps I’ll see you there!

As well as finding our destination, we’re looking at how to get help along the way. This week, Christian was met on the road by a friend who gave him a map. It’s inspiring to talk to the children about their own life plans and to help them make great choices about how to get there.

Talking of plans, we’re looking forward to Wednesday’s Stay and Play events (starting at 2.45 at the infants, and at 4.30 at the juniors) when we’ll be sharing our ideas about developing both playgrounds and enriching the children’s experiences of play. Do come along if you can. There’ll also be a Ground Force Day at the infants on Sunday 14th May (anytime from 10 until 3) – on this occasion there will be opportunities to get busy with some gardening, clearing, bench building, pruning…all willing hands welcome! During the week before “Action Sunday”, the children will be getting involved in the fundraising for this project with a sponsored sandcastle build in Years R-2! Watch out for sponsorship forms coming home soon.

We are so grateful to you for all the different ways you support the school. It is exciting to be able to continue to develop and improve the opportunities we offer to the children, thanks to your generosity!

Enjoy the bank holiday weekend.

With best wishes
Clare

SAINSBURYS GIFT CARD SCHEME - VACANCIES - URGENT HELP NEEDED!
We have two immediate vacancies to run the Sainsburys' gift card scheme. One vacancy is for the Sainsburys' scheme administrator - a role which involves approximately 1-1.5 hours per month to maintain the scheme with a few extra hours to finalise accounts at the end of the year. The other vacancy is for a person to manage the scheme accounts (including checking payments made on a monthly basis).
Please contact Carrie Witts (carriewitts@gmail.com) or Ros Vickerman (jrvickerman@yahoo.co.uk) if you are interested in taking on either of these roles.
The Sainsburys' scheme raises around £2,000 for HTSC each year and is a HUGE fundraiser for the school, so please help if you can – the scheme will have to close if we can’t find anyone to take it on.

SUMMER PARTY – 17 JUNE - AUCTION PRIZES
Plans for the joint Summer Party at Weybourne House are now well under way! Once again it will be a relaxed, fun filled evening with good food, dancing and a well-stocked bar at this local riverside location. For extra fun and funds we will, again, be holding a SILENT AUCTION but we need a team of people and prizes to make it happen. Would YOU be willing to source and co-ordinate prizes? Or do YOU or your company have a suitable prize to offer? These could be event tickets or passes to a ‘behind the scenes’ experience, a weekend away, a case of bubbly or similar. Have an idea? Please contact Ros (jrvickerman@yahoo.co.uk) or Carrie (carriewitts@gmail.com).

HTSC SPONSOR
A huge thank you to Cavender Sales & Lettings in Guildford who, for the third year running, have agreed to support HTSC. As well as sponsoring our major events, Cavender Sales & Lettings will donate £250 to the school if you decide to rent your property through them or if you sell a property through them, they will donate £500. So if you are thinking about either, please get in contact with them www.cavenders.co.uk

HTPD 21/4/17

21 April 2017

Dear parents

I hope the summer term has started well for you all! We have really enjoyed catching up with the children and have been impressed by the focused start they have made to their learning. The summer term is always so full of opportunities, and the superb weather has meant lots of time spent learning outside. Year 4 enjoyed their annual pilgrimage to see the bluebells in the Chantries before writing some stunning poetry, Year 1 kick-started their growing topic by planting seeds, and it was great to see the athletics track already in use at the juniors and the infants restarting their regular run around the field. I wonder how many miles they will clock up this year – last year they ran the equivalent of running to Rio!

With the better weather upon us, we are excited to launch our play project. We have been supported this year by an organisation called OPAL (“Outdoor Play and Learning”) to make sure we provide the best possible experiences for children at playtime. In order to fully explain the changes we are hoping to make, we will be holding an event on Wednesday 3rd May after school at both sites. First at the infants, from 2.45pm, the children will be able to “stay and play” and parents will hear from an OPAL leader,
Tom Burgess, about the principles behind this initiative. Then at 4.30pm at the juniors, the outdoor spaces will be opened up for children to show off to their parents. Tom will speak again about the impact we are hoping to see. We are so grateful for the generous parental support which is allowing us to really develop our grounds - it will be lovely to show you our newly refurbished arena. Please do put the 3rd May in your diaries.

Also, FOPS will be holding another Action Sunday at the infants where we hope to harness some parent power! We’ll give more information on this nearer the time, but do keep Sunday May 14th free if you can.

Lastly, can I remind junior school parents to ensure that their children don’t arrive on site too early, unless they are attending breakfast club. There are no staff on duty outside until 8.30am so children shouldn’t arrive before this time. Thank you for your support in this.

Enjoy the weekend.
With best wishes
Clare
