HTPD 22/4/16

22 April 2016

Dear parents

How exciting this week to be wishing Julia Grocott every happiness as she temporarily leaves HTPD to have her first baby. We will all miss her tremendously and I’ll let you know details once we know them! We’re excited to welcome Heather Havermans back on staff to teach with Bec in Year 4. Sarah Mistry, our lovely Year 5 teacher, who covered Heather’s maternity leave, will also be moving on at the end of the year having successfully been appointed to Busbridge Junior in Godalming. Many congratulations to her!

Following analysis of your responses to our parent survey last term, I’m delighted to publish the results on our website. It was so encouraging to see how many of you are very satisfied with the culture of respect and empathy that we endeavour to build at HTPD. Do take a look at the summary (click here) and please be reassured that both the staff and governors will be considering all of the feedback. One of the main issues raised was the problem of parking and road safety at both sites and this has already been very helpful in our discussions with Guildford Borough Council. Thank you again for partnering with us – we really value your views.

We received exciting news this week from another local partnership – Waitrose have accepted us as one of their local fundraising groups for the month of May! Every time you shop in the Guildford store you can put a green disc in the appropriate container and we receive a proportion of £1000 at the end of the month. We’ve chosen to put this towards a music project at the infant site on this occasion. Luckily we’ve also been able to enrol for a junior school initiative at a later date and will keep you posted.

With our theme this week “Bee Special”, the children learnt about how bees are so special that they fly despite it being inexplicable. Did you know that they defy our understanding of the laws of flight? What a wonderful metaphor for being unique, achieving against all the odds and surpassing expectations. I love how we see this every day at HTPD in the lives of the children. I hope you enjoy the weekend.

With best wishes, Clare

Tuesday 17th May 7pm “Assessment at HTPD”
We have planned an evening meeting to communicate to parents how the new curriculum has impacted on assessments of children’s attainment and progress. Parents from all year groups are very welcome to attend.

Admissions 2016 – Year R and Year 3
A reminder that if you are applying for a place in Year R or Year 3 for September you must accept (or decline) the place offered by Tuesday 3 May.

INFANT

Ugandan school link
We were excited this week to be visited at the infants by two teachers from Mukono in Uganda. The town of Guildford has worked with this project for a number of years and it was great to renew the link. The teachers quizzed us especially about our child-centred approach and enjoyed a tour around the classrooms.

Teacher-led clubs
You should now have received your child’s teacher-led clubs form with the allocated club circled.  We do have one un-named form!  Clubs will start next week commencing Monday 25 April with the exception of Lego Club which starts on Tuesday 3 May.

Run to Rio update
Last week (week 1) we collectively ran 288 miles and will keep you updated on progress.

Sports Hall Athletics
Well done to the Year 1 children who took part in the Sports Hall Athletics event at Spectrum yesterday.

Lost
Kezia Blume’s (Willow Class) scooter has been missing from the scooter park since before the Easter holidays. It is one of the metro scooters with a bright pink foot board and silver metal post, unfortunately un-named. Please check whether it has been taken home in error as Kezia would love to get it back.

Found
Boy’s blue football watch – left behind after football club on Wednesday.

FOPS News

Bake ‘n’ Stroll Saturday 23rd April
We hope you received the information about this upcoming event in your child’s book bag.
For the bake we are looking forward to lots of entries in our Bake Off competition. There are three categories; Kids Cakes and Cookies (with minimal help from a grown up), Dads’ Delicacies and Mums’ Masterpieces. Please bring your entries to the school hall between 1 pm and 1:45 pm on Saturday 23rd March. The competition will be judged by a cake expert and the winners announced at the end. It is a condition of entry that Bakers let us sell their cakes to hungry strollers.

The stroll will start from the school back playground at 2 pm. Follow the trail around Pewley Down to find the Dragon Eggs and crack the secret code. We will do our best to make the course buggy friendly, but come prepared for a bit of outdoor fun in any weather.

It costs £5 per family to enter the stroll and at the end enjoy a free cup of tea or squash and the opportunity to buy a tasty slice from the Bake Off entries.

JUNIOR

Healthy snacks

We’re concentrating again on being a healthy school and would ask for your support in making sure that all the children have only healthy snacks at breaktime (just fruit or veg). We will be asking children to put other snacks back in their bags for after school instead. If they would like to buy something, the Ecoteam will be starting a healthy tuck shop next week with prices at just 30p.

Termly Lunch Discount
Take advantage of the termly lunch discount! - Once again, there is a discount lunch price available to all who pay for the full term by Monday 25 April. The discount price is £2.35 per meal, not the full £2.40. The termly amount payable differs slightly by year group to take account of days out, so consult the lunch price chart on the school website Payment page. After the deadline, we uprate discount payments to the full meal price on ParentPay. Lunch credits are only used when meals are actually taken, so you really can’t lose. Leavers will have any credit refunded. Thanks, Lesley

Sport – no fixtures this week!
