Infant 17/4/15

17 April 2015

Dear parents

I wonder what makes you really happy? It’s a new term and we have a new assembly series. This series is all about rubbish and recycling. So Mr Recycle Man ( a.k.a. Nick) will join us each Monday to discuss something which we can use again or use in new and exciting ways. This week we also started looking at the life of St. Paul and Bible book of Acts. Near the start of the book the disciples were filled with Holy Spirit and began spreading the happiness and good news about Jesus. So our main theme has been Light and flame and we too are seeking to share happiness and joy within our school family.
The Daily Mail published a list of the top 50 things which make you feel great. Here is a link to the article.

I wonder which of these particularly appeals to you - the smell of freshly made bread or rainbows, chocolate melting in your mouth or remembering something you had forgotten?

As I visit other Schools in Surrey from time to time, I am very quickly aware of the difference in happiness levels – it is immediately apparent from the welcome, to the children, to the care and respect which are shown. At HTPD we actively seek for children to be happy so that they can thrive and enjoy school. Enjoyment leads to children keen to come to school and to actively engage in their learning.

I do hope you have a very happy weekend.

With best wishes, Richard

Summer Term

Welcome back to the first week of the summer term with the spectacular sunshine. We have been making the most of the weather: Year 2 have been digging up dinosaur bones, Year 1 went on a visit to the castle gardens and Year R enjoyed our beautiful outdoor spaces and the Wild Place – a fantastic week of learning.

Warmer weather

Now that the weather has warmed up, please ensure that children have a named water bottle in school every day as well as a named hat. On sunny days please also apply sun cream before children come to school.

Recycle Challenge
In assembly today Recycle Man issued a challenge to Walnut Class to build something useful or fun using egg boxes and bring it to school on Thursday or Friday next week. We will show the best ones in assembly on Friday. Different classes will take part each week using different materials.

Teacher-led clubs
Letters about teacher-led clubs will come out in book bags today and need to be returned by next Wednesday 22 April. Clubs themselves will start in the week beginning Monday 27 April.

New after-school clubs
• We have had an offer of a Year 2 Rounders Club being run between 4 and 5pm on Wednesday afternoons. This would be free and run by a volunteer parent who is a sports teacher at another school. We need to know whether we have enough interest to make it viable to run, so please email Julia Brown (juliab@pewleydown.surrey.sch.uk) if your child is interested in joining. Please note that there are no additional spaces in PUPs on a Wednesday.
• Additionally, Premier Tennis have offered to run Girls-only Tennis for Years 1 and 2, 3-4pm on Thursdays at their usual rates. Again, if you are interested please let Julia Brown know by email as above.

Lost Property
We have accumulated quite a lot of lost property which will be on display in the front playground before and after school on Monday and Tuesday next week. Please have a look and claim any items which you have lost; the remainder will then be sent to Phil the Bag.

Phil the Bag Collection - Wednesday 22 April 2015
We are holding a Phil the Bag collection at both the Pewley and HT sites on Wednesday 22 April 2015. If you have any unwanted clothes, shoes, bags, belts, bed linen, towels in wearable condition please donate them to raise money for the school. We receive 40p for every kilo collected. The clothes and textiles are mostly shipped to African countries where they are sold on at affordable prices. Please bring your bags to the grassy area next to the staff car park between 8am and 9.15am on Wednesday 22 April. Unfortunately we do not have anywhere to store bags which aren’t collected so please do not leave bags after this time. If it is more convenient, you can also drop your bags in the Atrium at HT anytime from this Friday until 9.15am on Wednesday 22 April. Thank you. We will let you know how much we raise.
