Junior 26/4/13

26 April 2013

Dear Parents,

I often write about what is really important in school and life. Sometimes we feel at odds with the authorities, though nearly always in line with your hopes and aspirations (I hope). Each year we write a School Development Plan which formally puts into place some targets which we will strive to achieve during the coming year. Incidentally that last sentence puts me in mind of my school motto. Sequor ut attingham (Godalming Grammar School – now Sixth form college). I’m not sure my Latin or translation is quite right but I think it means “I follow in order to attain”.

So back to the SDP… the senior leadership team of the school along with Robert Cotton met together this week to air our first thoughts about next year’s targets. It was a good four hour meeting, I am not sure what will finally emerge as our final list but I thought you might like to see our initial work. So here we are with the top ten:

1. Progress – ensuring all children make the very best progress possible in learning
2. Parents supporting learning – covering all apsects of parents being involved in the childrens learning
3. Teachers’ continuing professional development – making staff more responsible for their CPD.
4. Networking – joining up with other schools to learn and exchange ideas and expertise.
5. Academy debate – is now the right time? Perhaps working with the Diocese.
6. Leadership – working towards sustainable middle and senior leaders.
7. Transition – maths and writing – a major project looking at how children progress from one year to another. To make sure this is smoother and enables children to make consistent progress.
8. Fulfilling our vocation as a church school.
9. Financial security – in times of austerity ensuring money is used wisely.
10. Capitalising on the new Chapel and making a programme for the next major building projects.

Well that’s it, I expect it will end up as fewer targets, but I hope the content of all that will be there. The full SDP should be available for parents to see by the middle of June.

With best wishes, Richard
